Know Your Body, Trust Your Instincts, and Act When Something Feels Off by Greg Friend owner of G&C DJ Services
The other day, well actual every day I sit back and look at life when it is this time of year...look at the path of the ups & downs and say Thanks because I did something and acted.
We never know what life will bring. Life is unpredictable, filled with moments of joy, challenges, and the unknown. But one thing I’ve learned is that we must listen to ourselves, truly know our bodies, and have the courage to speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
Back on January 9th, 2014, my life changed in a way I couldn’t have anticipated. That was the day I went in for surgery to address stage two colon cancer. It was the beginning of an uncertain journey—one filled with surgeries, follow-ups, and questions about how much time I might have left on this earth.
What I did know, however, was that I had acted on the signs my body was giving me. I noticed blood in my stool, constant tiredness, unexplained weight loss, and an overall feeling of fatigue. At first, I told myself it was due to working hard or watching what I ate—excuses we all make when we’re busy with life. But when the blood in the toilet became too frequent to ignore, I knew deep down something wasn’t right.
I made an appointment with my doctor, went through a series of tests, and received the diagnosis: colon cancer. That moment changed everything. But because I acted when my body was telling me something was wrong, I’m here, 11 years later, sharing this message.
I often think about the “what ifs.” What if I hadn’t paid attention to those signs? What if I had brushed it off? Would I be here today to type this? I don’t know. What I do know is that every day since has been a gift—a gift I almost missed out on.
Now, as I look toward 2025 and beyond, I feel a fire inside me to make the most of every moment. We all come into this world with nothing, and we’ll leave with nothing. What matters is what we do in between—right now, in this moment. Not tomorrow, not next year. Now.
Yes, work toward your goals. Chase your dreams. But don’t keep waiting for the “perfect time.” Every step forward, no matter how small, leads to something greater. I’ve been given 11 extra years, and while I’ve done so much, I know I’ve been holding back—waiting for the “right time,” making excuses, or letting fear stop me.
Not anymore. At 60 years old, the light has finally gone on. It’s time to stop holding back, to stop letting fear or excuses dictate my life. It’s time to embrace the time I’ve been given, to live boldly, and to do what I’ve always wanted to do. Those who want to be part of the journey will be. And those who don’t? That’s okay too.
This is my message to you: take care of yourself. Listen to your body. Speak up when something doesn’t feel right. None of us know how much time we have, but we can make every day count.
I’m ready to kick ass in 2025 and beyond, in my personal life and business life, calling this new transition..... "This is Me"
