To all the linkers and bringer-togethers, and those that dance among and between. To those who carry the seeds of community, the salve of human connection. To those who refrain: “I really want to introduce you to…”. To those who would revive kin without the kings. Let’s do this.

It's a lot easier to diagnose someone than to be with them in their pain and confusion.

It's a lot easier to think we know what someone needs so that they're "better" or they're "fixed" than to just listen and hear them.

It's a lot easier to have concepts about "what's wrong" with ourselves than to just be present to our current feelings and experiences, and accept them.

In the end, though, our intellects and thoughts can often block our ability to be empathic - to simply be present and curious to what is.

Needing a dose of empathy without so much analysis? Want to learn the superpower of simple empathy?

This workshop is for anyone who wants to explore “by the book” NVC - either as a way to learn it for the first time, or as a way to get back to fundamentals for people who may have been studying and practicing it for years.
Learning NVC is like learning to dance. It’s a blend of feel and technique. Like dance, you need to learn to listen to rhythms and patterns, and if you want to partner dance, to tune into other people’s unique expression of the music of life.

Mitch Miyagawa is a group facilitator, community artist, and event producer who splits his time between 2 islands on Canada’s west coast, one big (Vancouver Island) and one small (Gabriola Island). He is a Certified NVC Trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication, and has led workshops and retreats internationally. He’s also the owner of Maji Events, a small business which creates events for communities, businesses, and organizations based around connection, inclusion, play, and art.

Learning Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is all about learning to choose how to live your life. To do so deliberately and intentionally, based on what is alive in any moment.

We so often default to right and wrong as our guides for how to live. Yet the "victories" in the game of Who's Right never satisfy.

What if we could live guided by to the beautiful set of human needs we all share, such as acceptance, freedom, and joy? What if the name of the game was Make Life Wonderful - for ourselves and everyone
around us?

Never do anything that isn't play - Marshall Rosenberg, creator of Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

This is a favourite saying among NVC Trainers!

In one way, NVC is about retraining our motivation - doing things to meet our needs and those of others instead of doing things because we should.

Marshall also wrote, “An important form of self-compassion is to make choices motivated purely by our desire to contribute to life, rather that out of fear, guilt, shame, duty, or obligation.

When what motivates us is simply to make life wonderful for others and ourselves, then even hard work has an element of play in it…

A joyful activity performed out of obligation, duty, fear, guilt, or shame will lose its joy and eventually engender resistance.”

We'll explore this idea, and many others, in...

Always hear the "yes" in the "no". - Marshall Rosenberg, creator of Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

You ask your daughter to wash the dishes, or your colleague to cover for you - and they say no. Hard to hear, right?

Imagine: what are they saying yes to, when they say no to you?

Could they be saying "yes" to rest and relaxation after a hard day at school?

Could they be behind in other projects, and saying "yes" to more time to catch up before taking anything new on?

Could they be saying "yes" to greater appreciation for all the work they do around the house or office?

And how might you respond differently when you hear all the "yesses" in their "no"? With greater compassion? With greater understanding that's really not all about you? 😊 but their own needs calling?

We'll explore this idea, and many others, in...

Another day. Another season. Another life. These are strange new days on planet Earth.

What are you grieving this morning? What are you grateful for? And what do you live for?

Renewal seems to live inside loss and endings. And endings are everywhere.

Grieving today for the daily destructions of living community. Grateful for another day. Sending love to all those who wish to live in poetry and beauty.

Very excited for our friends at Crimson Coast Dance Society!
This will be fascinating. Dancers, techies, artists, check it out.

(and also proud to have played a small part in seeding this - Maji Events wrote the successful Canada Council grant in collaboration with Crimson Coast, and led some of the initial brainstorming of design ideas.)

Announcing OUR HYBRID FUTURE: A Symposium that explores the impact and opportunity of digital technologies in live performing arts!

During the pandemic artists have been forced to be innovative, digitally-engaged, and community-focused, trying new things that have changed their practice and the way they make work and think about their craft. As the doors to the theatre reopen, what will we find inside?

Join us on September 9th, 16th, and 23rd to discover the wonder in hybrid performance, talk practice and process, meet the makers, reflect and share, learn new technologies, connect one-on-one, ask big questions, and build something new.
