Audrey and Arthur Burnett, my maternal grandparents, in August 1953. She was a teacher, a mother, a foster parent, a gardener, and a knitter but had a very bitter side. He was a WWII vet, a butcher, and a smoker. His early death from a heart attack broke my mom’s heart. She called him Pop, and because she was so petite, he called her “Penny,” the name she used throughout her life.

Google “how many people know their grandparent’s names,” and you are inundated with data supporting generalized generational amnesia. One of the most re-quoted statistics comes from an Ancestry.com poll that suggests that up to 1/3 of Americans cannot name all their grandparents. Experts and researchers agree that family history matters, and the popularity of genealogical websites and DNA testing companies proves that we want to know more about where we come from. I would love to help you preserve your unique life experience. It’s a lot of fun, and it contributes to the enduring strength of your family.

I refer to my clients as "sitters" because we sit together as I collect their stories. This sitter, who preferred to remain anonymous, gave me permission to share an image of her memoir. I have blurred out her name as it appeared over the title.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association established a link between writing about stressful experiences and improved health. The co-author of the study, Joshua M. Smyth, explains, “It actually has little to do with raw catharsis, which, I think, is what people assume.” Rather, the health benefits were a result of cognitive restructuring, or learning to see problems in a new way. https://www.picturesandstories.com/news/2015/3/31/the-mental-health-benefits-of-writing-a-memoir
