GETIFEST- Saturday, September 16th from 10am - 2pm @ Memorial Peace Park

Connecting the Dots in 2023
The Great Unleashing of 2009 was an all-day party thrown to announce the birth of a movement in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows dedicated to transition from a fossil fuel dominated world to more intimate and resilient communities. Fourteen years later, the event has become the annual GETI Fest held in Memorial Peace Park on the third Saturday of September. This year’s event takes place on September 16 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The fires and floods of climate change have underscored the relevance of the movement, allowing people to connect some of the dots between cause and effect. “In 2009, a group of us saw a need to deal with global issues at a local level,” says Gerry Pinel. “The Golden Ears Transition Initiative (GETI) grew out of that need. Our motto is "GET Informed, GET Inspired, GET Involved and GET Together" in building a strong vibrant community.”
The work of the movement takes place in its ‘action groups.’ They range from four or five people sitting down to discuss solutions to issues like food security or building materials, or to larger existing groups working on issues as widespread as transport, which is why the local chapter of the Bike Hub is a GETI action group. GETI is the umbrella organization.
“There are hundreds of people acting locally to build resilience into our communities,” notes Christian Cowley, another GETI founder. “GETI Fest is the single event where you get to find out what each group is doing. More than 35 groups will be represented at the festival, such as the Repair Café. ” GETI is based on the transition town model initially developed in the UK and now alive in thousands of communities globally.
“Attending GETI Fest familiarizes you with many of the people and groups actively committed to making our community a better place,” observes Steve Ranta, event entertainment co-ordinator. “And as a bonus, attendees also enjoy hearing accomplished local songwriters and musicians, like this year’s lineup of Bruce Coughlan, Paula Justus, and Holly Arntzen, whom we welcome as a new resident of our Maple Ridge community.”
The theme of this year’s event is ‘Connecting the Dots’ to encourage local residents to recognize what is happening globally and join hometown organizations in making things better. “Food security is an example of a low-hanging fruit issue in which local people can make a difference,” claims Cowley. “Local businesses are coming together with the City and non-profits to make community gardens available, while local service agencies are meeting at food security committee tables to work on policies for better food access and safety. Connecting the many silos in society is key to enhancing resilience.”
The main message of the Golden Ears Transition Initiative is that local action on global challenges is the essential ingredient for humanity to sustain hope for the future. Pinel echoes that idea. “GETI Fest is a community festival that showcases the many groups and businesses that are working together to build that resilient community. GETI has given me a home where I can work on solutions to the stresses we are all faced with in our modern world.” So please do get on down to GETI Fest on September 16.
