On Thursday, June 27th, the Kalayaan Centre was abuzz with vibrant festivities as it hosted the Philippine Heritage Month celebration. The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Filipino MPP Rechie Valdez and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which significantly acknowledged the Filipino community's contributions to Canada.

The first Philippine Heritage Month in Canada was celebrated by the City of Toronto in 2018, with Parliament officially proclaiming it later that same year. The primary festivities are on June 12 to mark the Philippine Independence Day. This month-long celebration honors one of Canada's fastest-growing communities, recognizing their vibrant culture and significant contributions.

MPP Rechie Valdez addressed the attendees, highlighting a groundbreaking new program for caregivers. She announced that caregivers arriving in Canada will automatically receive permanent resident status, a move to recognize their vital role and ensure their stability and security in the country.

Embodying his signature personable style, Prime Minister Trudeau mingled with the crowd, shaking hands and posing for selfies. With his youngest son Hadrien beside him, Trudeau lauded the Filipino community for their many contributions, emphasizing the cultural richness and hardworking spirit they bring to Canada. His presence and words resonated deeply, underscoring the importance of diversity and inclusion in Canadian society. He ended his speech with “Mabuhay” to a loud cheer of appreciation from the mainly Filipino audience.

The celebration was filled with cultural performances of music and dances, delicious Filipino cuisine, and a sense of community pride. The event not only celebrated Philippine heritage but also strengthened the bonds between the Filipino community and the broader Canadian society.

The June 27th festivities was a successful collaboration of Kalayaan Centre, Filipino Seniors of Mississauga, and Culture Philippines.

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiastic participation and for submitting your incredible work to the "Build Your Own Parol" Workshop.
Your creativity, dedication, and effort in crafting and submitting your parols have truly impressed us. Thank you for making this workshop an inspiring celebration of the Filipino Christmas tradition. Your Parols have not only added beauty but also contributed to spreading the joy and spirit of the festive season.

The winning parols:
1st Prize - Josie Sala (nativity scene inside the star)
2nd Prize - Frances Sevilla (Santa and open window to candle)
3rd Prize - John Ray (highest score in craftsmanship)

Rodel Meier’s parol was the original 1st Prize winner but she asked to exclude her parol in the competition. She gets the KCCC Benevolence Award.

Once again, thank you for being part of the "Build Your Own Parol" contest. We are honored to have had the opportunity to witness your creativity and talent.
