As an established videographer, I have made a concerted effort to lend a helping hand to amateur videographers. Particularly in places where media industries are not yet well established due to economic or political instability (such as in many indigenous communities around the world), this provides many talented young men and women with a chance to both showcase and progress in their videography skills.

Beginning in 2021, AN Media has been engaged in supporting videographers in the indigenous Amazigh community of Libya. The Amazigh people are native to North Africa and up until 2011 were legally forbidden from using their native tongue Tamazight (ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵜ) in public (an offence made punishable by law).

As a native Amazigh myself, I believe in giving back to my community. Thus, in 2021 AN Media initiated an annual community video competition for Amazigh videographers, with valuable awards for those that won. With a differing theme each year, the challenge consists of presenting a topic in the form of short informative videos.

Year 2971(2021) Community Video Competition

This inaugural round of the competition, focused on documenting stories from families and loved ones of those indigenous persons fallen in Libya’s uprising. We received 28 video submissions. The videos were judged on story structure and visual techniques.

Year 2972 (2022) Community Video Competition

In its second year, the competition continued to attract local talents. This year, the theme was “10 years of Teaching Tamazight,” as this year commemorates the 10th anniversary of Teaching Tamazight in schools in the Amazigh regions of Libya. With eight finalists, videographers presented stories from Tamazight teachers, students and parents.
