As a female DJ for less than a year, here is my 2 cts on the ‘Grimes’ scandal:
1. Being in front of a controller is not easy. Plenty of buttons that make you feel like in a cockpit. Every button has a function, learn and play with it.
2. Having an issue on stage is not easy. It can totally make you freak out and lose your common sense. Take a breath, no need to get the mic, focus, restart.
3. A lot of DJs outsource many steps of their performance but it doesn’t exempt you from controlling and double checking.
4. This gave her a huge publicity. Good or bad, it’s publicity.
5. This event is just hurting female DJs that try to make their way, the right way. DJing can be seen as a boy’s club, entering as a female can be limited when we see that unskilled DJs, playing on their fame and looks, to play at big festivals and failing. It hurts us, it hurts the industry. We need more women, talented women, more diversity, for a fuller music experience.
