Full Circle: A Career’s Beginning and End

There’s a poetic beauty to how life often brings us back to where we started. My sports photography career began with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, and here I am again, capturing their relentless spirit, skill, and grit on the ice.

In these frames, the Bulldogs’ star goalie Colin Winn, a Westford, MA native, stands tall between the pipes. At just 20 years old, Colin has already built an impressive resume. With a .918 save percentage, a 2.91 GAA, and 11 wins this season, his future is as bright as the rink lights illuminating his every save.

Watching Colin guard the net reminds me of why I fell in love with this craft—capturing the raw emotion, the fleeting moments of brilliance, and the stories that unfold in every game. His determination mirrors the spirit of the team, a team that gave me my start and, fittingly, bookends my journey in sports photography.

I’m grateful for every shot, every game, and every moment like this that I’ve had the privilege of documenting. As my lens turns to new horizons, I’ll carry these memories—and the Bulldogs—with me forever.

Official Announcement: Departure from the Lake Cowichan Kraken

After four dedicated seasons as the photographer for the Lake Cowichan Kraken, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position. This choice was not made lightly but was necessary due to financial and logistical challenges that made continuing in this role unsustainable.

My time with the team has been filled with countless memories and rewarding moments on and off the ice. From capturing pivotal plays to preserving the spirit of the Kraken community, I have been honored to be a part of each player’s journey. However, recent changes to the pay structure, along with increased travel expenses, have added financial pressures that make it impossible for me to continue.

As someone who relies on disability income, I had hoped that working with the team would provide supplemental income to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, the current payment schedule and financial support do not meet these needs. My attempts to advocate for a structure that accommodates my circumstances were unsuccessful, leaving me with no viable option but to step back.

I am incredibly grateful for the relationships I have built and for every moment I captured through my lens. Wishing the Kraken the very best as they continue to make waves on the ice!

Thank you, Kraken family, for an unforgettable journey.

Bombers Pull Off Electrifying Comeback to Claim Top Spot in VIJHL

In front of a fired-up crowd of 293, the Port Alberni Bombers delivered a heart-stopping comeback against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Wednesday night. The first two periods saw the Bombers in control, but a fierce third-period push from the Kings set the stage for a thrilling finish.

Down by one late in the game, the Bombers stormed back with relentless energy. In a crucial 2-on-1 rush, Leim Smith executed a flawless pass to Luke Ridgway, who found himself with a wide-open net. With ice in his veins, Ridgway one-timed the puck past the sprawling Glacier Kings goaltender Aaron Pichette, sealing a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The crowd erupted as the final buzzer sounded, witnessing their team vault into first place in the VIJHL with a stellar 6-1 record. This victory not only capped a gutsy comeback but also sent a message to the rest of the league.

In putting together this portfolio magazine, my goal was to celebrate the incredible privilege I had of witnessing one of the most remarkable Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) championship teams ever assembled. As I look back, I can only marvel at the extraordinary 22/23 season with the Oceanside Generals—a season that will go down in history not just for the championship itself but for the heart, unity, and relentless drive that defined every moment of that journey.

From the coaches, players, and staff, to the selfless volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, every single individual in the Generals’ organization played an integral role in that spectacular championship run. To have been a part of this experience as one of their sports photographer was a dream come true—a culmination of dedication and passion that began for me back in 2018.

This was my first time capturing a championship victory, and I can’t quite put into words how overwhelming and special that moment was. The Generals had tasted defeat the year prior, falling to the Peninsula Panthers in a hard-fought six-game series on the road. But they came back stronger, more focused, and hungry for redemption. Fast forward a year later, and there we were, standing victorious on the road once again—only this time, it was the Generals who had clinched the championship in six thrilling games against the Saanich Predators.

That triumph wasn’t just a testament to skill—it was the embodiment of perseverance, teamwork, and the unwavering belief that this group could rise above any challenge thrown their way. It was an honor to be welcomed into the Oceanside Generals family, and I am endlessly grateful to everyone who made me feel like part of the team during such an unforgettable chapter of hockey history.

The excitement, the energy, and the pure emotion of that championship will stay with me forever. To capture it through my lens was more than just a job—it was an experience that will fuel my love for the game for years to come. Thank you, Oceanside Generals, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something truly extraordinary.
