One reason you may not be able to leave is because no one would believe you.

Victims are often met with questions and doubt when they open up about the abuse they have experienced. This can lead to further isolation from friends or family.
“They’re so nice, they would never do that.”
“Are you sure?”
“What did you do to provoke them?”
“You’re just looking for attention”.

Opening up about abuse is difficult and can take tremendous effort. If someone you know has come to you with their experience and you are not sure how to respond, just listen. Support them by avoiding questions like the ones above.
