📣 OPEN DECKS AT ROOM 909 📣

Ever wanted the opportunity to play on industry standard DJ equipment? Now’s your chance! Come join us for our Open Decks session at the event on Saturday.

HOW IT WORKS:
We will have 3 x 30min time slots (9:00 - 9:30, 9:30 - 10:00, 10:00) designated as “Open Decks” for Nelson’s Underground Dance Community D’Js. DJ’s are selected by a RANDOM DRAW. DJ’s who wish to participate need to arrive at Eagle’s Hall for 8:50pm. We’ll invite all DJ’s present at 8:50 to come up and throw their name in the hat for a random draw. Whoever’s name is picked first gets their first choice of the 2 available time slots listed above, 2nd gets 2nd choice and 3rd name picked gets what is left. Any DJ’s who have been previously for Open Decks and DIDN’T get picked, will get an additional ballot so we can give everyone a chance to play (ie, 2nd visit without playing gives 2 ballots, 3rd visit without playing gets 3 ballots, etc. Reset back to 1 ballot after they’ve played).

Whether your name gets drawn or it doesn’t, we still encourage you to come out to the next Open Decks and throw your name in the hat again. We love to see that enthusiasm and look forward to seeing you often and getting to know you better.

REQUIREMENTS:
We must still respect the musical style of the event, and the flow of the evening, so this is NOT OPEN FORMAT.
This opportunity is for *underground house music* DJ’s - sorry, no hardcore, EDM or commercial dance, trance, dubstep, jungle etc. Any genre that falls under the “house & techno music umbrella” is acceptable: deep house, funky, Chicago, jackin’ house, progressive house, tech house, melodic techno etc.
NO OUTSIDE EQUIPMENT please. We’re keeping it simple and DJ’s must play off USB’s, using 2 x CDJ-2000NXS2s and 1 x DJM900-NXS mixer already set up in Mercury Lounge. No laptops. controllers, etc.

DJ’s who arrive on time at 8:50pm will get receive free cover for the evenings event and a free drink, whether they play or not.

Artist Spotlight: .guide

Jack Bunce a.k.a. “Buntz” shares his passion for love and healing through music. He works professionally as a coach and breathwork facilitator, incorporating music regularly into his sessions with clients to help create deeply emotional experiences that heal. On the dance floor, he spins everything from nostalgic lo-fi house to groovy, banging techno. He “caught the groove” as a teenager and seeks to share the feelings of freedom and joy that music continues to give him.

Artist Spotlight: .909

Brunch 909 aka .wav , is a deep / minimal house Producer & DJ. He has played at various clubs and festivals across Canada and released on international record labels, including Apparel Music (Italy), Conceptual Records (Moldova) & Music.Art.Ppl (Canada).

His music has seen support from DJs such as Flavour Trip, Cinthie and Anja Schneider, as well as being promoted on Beatport’s Best New Deep House Playlist.
Brunch currently has 7 EPs to be released in 2024 with labels Whoyostro (Ukraine), Closer to Truth (Berlin), All Blak (Canada) & Apparel Music (Italy).

Brunch started 909 Events BC in late 2023 in hopes of sharing high fidelity audio-visual experiences with others.

Artist Spotlight:

Emerencz Merkle is a Q***r DJ, Producer, and the Founder of OBSKUR MUSIC Record Label presently residing on the Nelson in British Columbia.

They have a background as a classically trained musician who delved into Northwestern Canadian electronic music culture in 2009. Their transformative journey draws inspiration from their time in Berlin and other underground electronic scenes, driving them to shape off-the-grid spaces into platforms for sharing warehouse-influenced techno, house, acid, and various electronic styles.

Melding their affection for experimental sounds, they skillfully fuse 90’s techno, acid, new breaks, jersey, 90s Chicago / Detroit house into their musical repertoire.

As the driving force behind OBSKUR MUSIC and OBSKUR BOOKINGS, Emerencz channels their community-building zeal into providing a global platform for Q***r / POC / women talent. Their penchant for self-expression extends beyond music, echoing in the art and fashion woven into their label’s designs.

The inception of OBSKUR RADIO speaks to their commitment to showcasing Q***r, women, and POC talents on a global scale, while OBSKUR Bookings, their brainchild, is dedicated to uplifting the talents within their community.

Currently, Emerencz is transitioning from acid techno production to the realm of sound and visual design under the moniker THEIR / THEIR, a testament to their relentless pursuit of creative evolution.

Artist Spotlight: Meg Nitos aka Mraki
Mraki is a multifaceted artist born & raised in the heart of the Kootenay mountains. Having been a part of the rave scene since a young buck, they’ve truly been around to experience the growth of the scene, including the evolution of their own musical finesse and contributions to the community.
Once Mraki finally jumped on the decks, things evolved in a steady fashion. Mraki finds passion in not just playing shows, but in creating a vibe & facilitating community in the Nelson area. From throwing a Hip-hop focused monthly fka boombap, to hosting a weekly radio show named [ unidentified ], to curating shows & gatherings all year round. Mraki is in it for the love of fam & music.
You can expect Mraki to play a diverse range of music that’s dependant on the vibe. You can expect anything from a deep & melodical bass fueled journey packed w/ dub, rnb, downtempo & hiphop, to a high energy set fused w/ worldly likes of Baille, Amapiano, Dancehall, UK influenced Garage & 4x4 sounds, all with a little sprinkle of nostalgia. Mraki is a true curator & dance-floor connoisseur that has a flavour for any slot & vibe.

Artist Spotlight:

A founding member of the Audio Bucket collective, Sherm was a driving force in pushing techno in the nation’s capital during the late 2010’s. During this time he shared the decks with the likes of Black Asteroid, drumcell, Mary Yuzovskaya, and Pleasurekraft while making appearances at underground staples in the Ottawa scene like the White Rabbit Ottawa and Sunday Sessions parties.

While still holding a deep appreciation for the techno sound, nowadays he’s found further influence from legends like Danny Tenaglia who can tell compelling genre bending stories on the dance floor. You can expect to hear a selection of rare house grooves, driving hypnotic techno, to deep cuts of shameless 80’s classics you might have heard your weird uncle play at the family BBQ.
