KANTAN was born out of the love of Malaysian food and culture. We offer eclectic Malaysian flavours using recipes right out of the 'kampungs' (villages) that are delicious yet hard to find outside of Malaysia.

'Kantan' is a Malay name for the bright pink ginger torch flower, which is commonly used in traditional Malay and Peranakan dishes of Malaysia such as 'Assam Laksa' and 'Nasi Kerabu'. The

flower has a very distinct fragrance and adds a peppery zing to any dish. In the 'kampungs', food are often times cooked to accommodate large families and neighbours together. We at KANTAN hope to recreate this social atmosphere when friends get together for a night of fine dining, in a relaxed homey environment. 1. Roti Jala: our delicate Malaysian net crepe with a rich chicken curry.

2. Kerabu Pomelo: a zesty pomelo salad with scorched prawns, herbs, toasted coconut, peanuts, and a sweet-tangy dressing.

3. Roti Halloumi: crispy roti layered with fried halloumi and our house-made jam — salty, sweet, and everything in between. An instant hit!

Thank you for all your support since we reopened in september. It was a big learning curve starting up a business again, with a small albeit amazing team and a big menu, but Im glad we've done it.

It was so lovely to see familiar faces as well as new ones enjoying our humble cultural food. Thank you! I hope to share more home-style recipes in the new year with you all. Wait for it, okay? In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Since I picked up catering again some weeks ago (after the reataurant has stabilised since re-opening), it's been a ball! - 1. Akishe and Mern's intimate wedding. 2. Kantan Fried Chicken - no.1 customer favourite 3. Roti Jala - the most requested item (turmeric crepe with chicken curry), which just might make a comeback on the restaurant menu in the new year. 4. Fried Mee Siam - Yummy fried noodles, traditionally eaten during tea time 5. Hope St Radio's staff party! 6. Pandan Crepe Cake - a much missed dessert at Kantan on Johnston St. 7. Cleo, my kitty.

Hi guys! Hope you're keeping warm in this chilly weather. A lot of you may know this piece of news already from visiting our restaurant the last couple of months. This week will be our FINAL week of service in Fitzroy. Yes, that's right! It's a bitter-sweet moment for all of us here, but definitely not goodbye!
KANTAN is (thankfully) growing - a new place is needed so we can offer up more home-style catering, restaurant as well as retail. We could not have done it over these three years without the fabulous people of Fitzroy and beyond - despite covid, inflation, come what may, you are the bestest of customers that any resto would be jealous to have 🥰
We will definitely miss Fitzroy and its wonderful community. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on our socials. We'd love to see you one final time before our doors shut and make way for another new fabulous restaurant in our stead. Please show them the kind of support that you've shown us.

Had the pleasure of catering an important celebration recently - the first Malaysian-Chinese barrister to be appointed Senior Counsel in Australia. The request was for Malaysian style finger food to bring about fond feelings of home for the esteemed guest. Stories like this are so inspirational for other Malaysians to achieve their dreams beyond Malaysia, Malaysia boleh! 🥳❤️ Thanks Vic Uni and Tienyi for making us part of this historical moment.

Some of us are travelling to see family and others are having family visiting from overseas. It's important to spend quality time with loved ones, agreed? 😊

Fun fun day catering for Belinda and Chian's amazing Old Shanghai themed wedding! Eighth day of the eighth month - very auspicious in asian culture 🥰 hopefully the mandarin oranges we placed around our buffet set up would add to the auspiciousness.
You know whats extremely satisfying? Its when all the food is finished at the end of an event, which means no food waste at all! And today was that. Just enough food for everyone to have seconds, even thirds. But all finished. Amazing. Well done dear guests 😊
Catering is always pretty exhausting, especially when you're doing everything yourself like me.. but those happy looks on everyone faces after eating my home-style food make it all worth it - beats any day working in corporate for me.
And today a guest said to consider production for my chicken curry (paste). Cant say I havent thought of it.. maybe even bottled kantan fried chicken sauce too if there's demand 😊 - something I have to think about down the line... but now in my tiredness, let me just dwell a little longer in all the positive vibes from everyone I met today 💕.
