KANTAN was born out of the love of Malaysian food and culture. We offer eclectic Malaysian flavours using recipes right out of the 'kampungs' (villages) that are delicious yet hard to find outside of Malaysia.

'Kantan' is a Malay name for the bright pink ginger torch flower, which is commonly used in traditional Malay and Peranakan dishes of Malaysia such as 'Assam Laksa' and 'Nasi Kerabu'. The

flower has a very distinct fragrance and adds a peppery zing to any dish. In the 'kampungs', food are often times cooked to accommodate large families and neighbours together. We at KANTAN hope to recreate this social atmosphere when friends get together for a night of fine dining, in a relaxed homey environment. We’re in The Age!

Kantan has been featured in Good Food’s guide to laksa in Melbourne — and our plant-based curry laksa was named their pick for vegan laksa.

Honestly? This one feels pretty special.
I developed this recipe during lockdown, for the Fitzroy community — many months of tinkering with veg stock, spice blends and chasing that perfect bowl. To see it recognised by Good Food now? Pretty chuffed! 🩷

Oh, what a year!

Since reopening in September 2024, it’s honestly been a bit of a whirlwind — the good kind, the exhausting kind, the 'wow we’re really doing this!' kind.

Thank you for welcoming us into your neighbourhood so warmly, feeding your faces with us, bringing friends, coming back again, and genuinely caring about what we’re building here. It means more than you probably realise.

We’ve been growing slowly (on purpose), shaping the team, finding our rhythm, and sneaking more home-style dishes onto the menu — the kind that feel familiar, comforting, and very us.

This little restaurant is still evolving, and we’re learning as we go. Your support, patience, chats at the counter, and quiet encouragement have kept us going on the long days.

We’ll be closing for two weeks to do a few important things:

Try out new recipes, plan for the new year, deep-clean the entire restaurant (yes, everything), and take a proper break to refresh, reset, and dream up new ideas for our little neighbourhood spot.

It’s also been a little over one year of operating in this new space, and honestly, we couldn’t have done it without your continued support — the familiar faces, the first-timers who became regulars, and everyone who keeps coming back to try just one more dish 🤭

Our menu and offerings are always evolving, so we hope you’ll enjoy the new things we’ve been quietly working on and the ideas still to come.

We’ll be snoozing from 23 Dec to 5 Jan, so get your fix before we snooze.
