Using innovative green architecture; the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre showcases alternative energy in action. Designed and built by students in Fleming College’s Sustainable Building Design and Construction program, the centre is, in the words of program coordinator and award winning sustainable builder Chris Magwood "Canada’s most sustainable building." Located on more than 200 acres of Trent

University’s stunning wildlife sanctuary lands, this unique 2,000 square foot structure is open for programming year round and will accommodate up to 80 people at any one time. Educating for a sustainable future is a proactive way to instill hope among Canadians: hope to move beyond a fossil fuel economy, hope to live more gently and sustainably in our communities and hope for our children to experience a cleaner, greener future. The Environment Centre showcases:

* Straw bale insulation
* Slip straw and hempcrete insulation
* Earth bag foundations
* Living green roof
* Passive solar design
* Net-zero energy photovoltaic solar system
* Geothermal radiant floor heating
* Solar hot water system
* Rainwater harvesting and treatment system
* Constructed wetland grey water filtration system
* Composting toilets
* High efficiency windows and doors
* 50% recycled steel slag concrete floors
* Cordwood bench
* Reclaimed bricks

Happy Thanksgiving from Camp Kawartha!

We want to express our gratitude to each and every one of you! Thank you for being part of our family and for joining us to explore our miraculous world. We hope that you connect with family and friends this weekend and, especially, get outside to see the beautiful autumn colours in the Kawarthas (or where-ever you are at the moment)!

We've been watching this pumpkin spontaneously and creatively grow at the Environment Centre. It is nourished from the left over compost used by our Nature School program, Rootwood, to build their raised tree-nursery beds for their Miyawaki Forest initiative that was generously funded and supported by the Jane Goodall Foundation.

Squash are part of the three sisters family in Indigenous teachings. Robin Wall Kimmerer speaks eloquently of the relationship between corn, beans and squash in her beloved book, Braiding Sweetgrass (2013: 132): "The way of the Three Sisters reminds me of one of the basic teachings of our people. The most important thing each of us can know is our unique gift and how to use it in the world ... Being among the sisters provides a visible manifestation of what a community can become when its members understand and share their gifts. In reciprocity, we fill our spirits as well as our bellies."

Here's the pumpkin pie recipe that Leigh and her son will be making this weekend:

Pumpkin Pie

2 eggs and 1 yolk
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon ( or to your taste!)
1 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cloves
2 c. pumpkin
1 1/2c. heavy cream

1. Preheat oven to 425 F
2. Beat eggs, mix in sugars, salt and spices
3. Add pumpkin and cream
4. Pour into pie shell
5. Bake at 425 F for 15 min, turn down to 350 F and bake for at least 1 hour (more likely 1 1/2 hours)
6. The pie is done when a knife is inserted into the middle and comes out clean, or when the centre is just a little light and jiggly but only just a little!

Pie Crust (9 inch pie)

1 c. flour
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. sour cream
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp sugar

1. Cut butter into cubes and let sit
2. Whisk flour, salt and sugar
3. Work butter in with your hands until coarse meal
4. Add sour cream
5. Form into disks and refrigerate for at least 1 hr.
5. Remove dough, let sit a few minutes and roll out.

Enjoy!!

The days are getting colder! The bright yellows, purples and whites of the meadows are giving way to the crimsons, oranges and golds of the maple, sumac and birch. The goldenrod and asters are putting on their winter foliage that will soon be dusted with the sparkle of frost in the mornings.

Come explore the seasons with us at Camp Kawartha! We offer overnight and extended day school programs (https://campkawartha.ca/outdoor-education/) at the Camp Kawartha Outdoor Education Centre at our picturesque site on Clear Lake. For shorter day programs and our Nature School, check out the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre nestled within the Trent Wildlife Sanctuary (https://campkawartha.ca/environment-centre/). “Everything about Anishinaabe people - everything about my people - everything that we have ever done, every song that we have ever sung, every story that we have every told, absolutely every single part of us is about connection, is about bringing things together. … its about trying to say how to these things come together, how do they by being brought together then bridge or teach us or, most importantly, show us the path forward”.

Dr. Niigaanwewidam Sinclair (4 Seasons of Indigenous Learning, May 23, 2024)

Take a moment today to reflect on your relationships to this land, to your elders and the people who you have learned from, to your loved ones, and especially to the children in your life, and to give thanks. We wear orange today to acknowledge what happens when caring for each other and the land breaks down. We remember and recognize the legacy and impact of the Residential School system and all the many other ways colonialism has dismantled and destroyed relationships, knowledge and peoples throughout the world. We are deeply grateful for all the many teachings and friendships that we have been gifted with by the peoples of this land, human and other-than-human. Chi chi miigwech!! Please take some time today to listen to Indigenous voices and to connect with the land.

The Camp Kawartha Environment Centre welcomed back our Nature School students and families last week! We are so excited to see you!

It’s the season of seeds right now and the Environment Centre students are watching the golden rod shift from bright flower to dusky seed. The milkweed pods are cracking open as we bid farewell to this year’s monarchs on their long trek south. And the giant puffballs are once again a favourite for children to discover in the orchard. Thanks to the Rootwood explorers for this amazing puffball photo today!

The Camp Kawartha Nature School programs (https://campkawartha.ca/environment-centre/nature-school/ ) connect kids with nature through inquiry-based learning. There is still room in some of our programs. Please contact Craig ([email protected]) for more information.

A group of family and friends gathered at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre on Saturday (Sept 7, 2024) to celebrate another great climate ride by local eco-heroes Glen Caradus and Nicholas Ormond. Glen and Nick (both of whom are part of the Camp Kawartha family of outdoor educators) completed their most ambitious climate ride yet of 324KM in one go! 324 was the carbon dioxide parts per million level when Glen was born in 1969. Today, CO2 levels have risen to 427ppm.

This is Glen and Nick’s 4th annual Climate Ride. This year they are supporting the Curve Lake First Nation Cultural Center. There is still time to contribute to their GoFundMe site (https://www.gofundme.com/f/curves-for-curve-lake-first-nation-climate-ride-2024?utm_campaign=fp_ss_icons_ai&utm_content=amp1v3&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link) until the end of September. They are hoping to raise $5000.00! Camp Kawartha was a grateful recipient of their 2022 Climate Ride and the Climate Ride also funded a water reservoir for the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre’s Miyawaki Forest last year.

Congratulations to both Glen and Nick for their amazing ride through difficult weather conditions on Saturday! Rest well and we look forward to next year’s cycling adventure!

'What can I do to help address the changing climate?'

It's a complex problem - here are a few places anyone can start. Simple isn't always easy but having good information can help.

Emissions-cutting lifestyle changes alone won’t solve the climate crisis. But they make a difference. Here are the top four sources of greenhouse gas emissions for the average person in Canada, plus tips for lowering them.

Fish are friends too!

Last week, we released a whopping 81 salmon fry into the river as part of the Bring Back the Salmon Program.

We were so happy to have the opportunity to teach our children about Ontario’s rich biodiversity, and how we can each take part in bringing back the once thriving populations of native species.

This was the CK Environment Centre’s 4th year participating in the program.

Here’s to many more! 🐟

Regenerate!

At the Environment Centre, one of our greatest Joys is to help Nature Regenerate and to teach others that they too can help the Earth to be healthy!

At our site, over the years, we have planted innumerable Native Trees, Shrubs, and Low Growing Plants to help enrich our little corner of the World.

The reason we do this is to benefit People (i.e., humans) to have a healthy, beautiful place, to help other Species (bugs, animals, birds, plants, etc..) to have resources they need to thrive, for the Water -healthy land means healthy Water, for the Beauty and Joy of it (it's fun😄) and well, for the Earth - it's all linked together out there isn't it? Once established, the plants themselves do all the work!

It's gratifying to watch these plants, shrubs, and trees, grow and then flower!

Just a few pictures posted here to start.

In the meantime, how can you or do you already Regenerate your little corner of the world?

All the best!

Something to consider?

Join me in urging the Government of Ontario to forgo the proposed amendments to regulations under the Endangered Species Act, 2007. The proposed changes will undercut critical rules to protect many of Ontario’s most vulnerable plants and animals.
