If you ordered tulip bulbs through us you can expect an email update early this week.
Just because we are closing the farm down does not mean your tulip bulb orders have been cancelled.
There’s still lots of work to be done on the farm and we are just as eager as you to begin planning our Spring gardens.
We’re expecting the mail out/delivery date to fall somewhere in the third week of October.

You made us feel so special and significant. We had no idea how much this business inspired and moved people. Feeling pretty emotional about all of it. Thanks for lifting us up ❤️

✨A New Chapter. Island Flower Farm’s Last Season.
I wish I had the ability to write some long meaningful post about the news I’m going to share. I can’t. My creativity and inspiration and brain power is at an all-time low. This overwhelming career, the pandemic, Chris’s health, etc. have all weighed deeply on us the past few years and we’ve made the heavy decision to close the farm.
Flowers will be available until our first frost (2-3 weeks left to go). Until then, we still have tulip bulbs available on our online shop & we are continuing to offer local delivery for our custom arrangements. Alternatively you can visit the Farm Stand, with its lasts days being September 19th & 26th.
This has been the most rewarding, transformative, and unforgettable journey of our lives. I don’t have all the answers for what comes next. But what I do know is that none of this would have been possible without your support and eagerness for the flowers we grew and the stories we shared. Thanks for making lasting imprints on our hearts. We’ll cherish these memories for a lifetime to come.

Something I’ve been holding back from sharing because of feeling vulnerable. Chris is not well. Since I met him 7 years ago he’s been battling chronic pain & health issues. Last year he was forced to stop farming because the pain was too much.
Last month he received essential surgery in the U.S. to help improve the quality of his life. He has months of recovery ahead, but we are hopeful his future will be much more pain-free. It has been a heavy load fitting into this new way of living for both of us.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the Farm Stand hasn’t been open often.
Going forward into September, we’ll be making the decision week by week to have the Farm Stand open on Sunday’s or not. I’m very sorry.

We have taken on a lot this year. This is our farms 7th year in operation. Our first couple of years we sold just veggies, and 5 years ago we began growing flowers and scaling our business up from there. The Farm Stand is the only place we can cut back at the moment to lighten the load.
Due to the pandemic, we pivoted our business from Farmers’ Markets and weddings to our farm stand, bouquet subscriptions, custom orders, and offering delivery. But this year weddings are back and full on(from 2019, 2020, and then fresh new weddings for 2021). We were continuing to supply our bouquet subscription, wedding florists and the Farm Stand, and it’s just too much for me to take on. I hope you understand.

We still have our offerings up on our webshop - so you can still get our flowers that way.

Thank you for your patience and grace with us as of lately. It’s been a very heavy & emotional chapter in our lives. Have a good Monday ahead!

✨Summer is sure delivering some seriously stunning flowers. Some of my favourites are going out to our July Bouquet Subscribers this week - lacy spikes of larkspur, dainty puffs of nigella, wispy stems of agrostemma, and dollops of cheerful feverfew.
Our July Subscription is full, but we still have room for August & September, which means dahlias & Lisianthus season!

✨ It’s been incredibly hot and we’re experiencing record temperatures on the Island. The flower crew has been coming in at 7 am to beat the heat and attempt our long and ever growing to-do list. We try to get as much done as possible before noon, because after that we’re too delirious to continue.
No amount of sunscreen, large floppy hats, or frequent trips into the walk-in-flower cooler can compete with this weather. We’ve met our match.
We can only do so much. We’ve tried our best to monitor our crops, but unfortunately some of them were scorched beyond repair. Hot weather farmers, hats off to you. I don’t know how you do it!

Hi👋 We’re Chris & Bronwyn.
Two passionate young farmers on Vancouver Island.
He’s Chris. His name was the most popular baby name of his birth year.
Chris grew up many places. Ontario, Salt Spring, & the Caribbean to name a few. Always dreaming about traveling and exploring. Can identify any countries flag. Always has big ideas. Cheers for England in the Euro Cup. Sleeps in bed with the window open and a single linen sheet in the dead of winter.

I’m Bronwyn. Pronounced Brawn-win or Bron-win. Most people have never heard my name before let alone are capable of pronouncing it.
I grew up in Southern Alberta. Lived in the same house for 19 years. Cannot come to terms with ending a good book and always leaves the last chapter unfinished. Horrible with geography. Cheering for France in the Euro Cup because she loves French Food. Sleeps in bed with a duvet folded in half longways to create a double duvet to stay warm because Chris has the window open in the winter.

We started this farming journey, not knowing what the future held. Before we knew it this entire thing had turned into something far more magical than we could have ever expected.
We have a small 5 acre farm on Vancouver Island where we sell flowers at our road-side farm stand. We offer month-long bouquet subscriptions and custom arrangements for local delivery. In the fall we have an incredible line-up of unique tulip bulbs for sale with nation wide shipping. And in the winter we create fragrant seasonal holiday wreaths to adorn your home with.

We’re really happy you’re here with us. We’re damn proud of what we created.

✨Some fiery hot bouquets to match the heat wave hitting Vancouver Island 🥵
Wanna hear a funny story? Our cooler stopped working during a government warning heat wave this week. It was full of flowers. Our entire income for the week. Wanna hear where it gets worse? Chris had taken me away to celebrate my birthday for the day. We NEVER leave the farm like that.
We were taste testing balsamic vinegar with no cares in the world and he excused himself for a phone call. When he returned I could tell something was off. The service crew said they could fix it tomorrow afternoon. Our flowers would be dead by then. Our harvest would be completely lost. A series of phone tag pursued, some very stressful facial features followed, and eventually Chris secured a technician to arrive that day.
An especially big thank you to Chris for making my birthday extra special. For pretending like everything was okay. For trying to give me one day where I didn’t have to worry about the farm. For secretly managing things from afar. For being my best team mate & friend through this wild adventure.
Stay cool & stay hydrated this weekend. I’m pulling some weeds and then heading to the lake for a cool dip.

Life is weird right now. But I know it’s weird for a lot of us. I’m both scared and excited to know what’s around the corner every week.
Small business’ are built from humble beginnings by real human beings. We have faults & failures. We have bad days. We make mistakes. We forget to prioritize our health and family. We get overwhelmed. Our ‘work’ to ‘life’ ratio is very unbalanced.
Flower farming is the least glamorous job I have ever had. It takes a really good sense of humour, patience, good friends, resiliency, and passion to keep you chugging along.
There are bills to pay, and at least half a dozen social media accounts to keep up to date. Building and managing your own online store and website is a (insert explicit). There’s crying in the forest where no one can hear you. You’re going to be broke for a long time. You’re going to feel overwhelmed and have melt downs. You’re going to pour your every ounce of being into your work.
But when you get to put ‘owner’ in your FB job bio, or when there’s a line-up outside your farm stand, or when you receive a glowing review, or when your community fiercely supports your pandemic pivot, or when you witness tears welling up in a clients eyes upon delivering a bouquet, or when you receive hundreds of condolence messages for your dog that passed away…. Let alllllllllll of that soak in for a couple minutes. It’s humbling. It’s encouraging. It’s empowering.

Life is weird right now, but I’m counting my blessings today. Thanks for being apart of our journey.

We listen to a lot of Reggae on the farm. From classics like Bob Marley and the I-Threes, to newer additions like Chronixx and Stephen Marley, it's relaxing, it's positive, and it helps calm our busy minds. Here's a short sneak-peak of Bronwyn planting a row of Delphiniums in the hoop house today, along with a happy riddim with a much needed message. 🎤Don't waste your time With thoughts of giving up It's all in your mind Let it go, let it go🎤

Bed Prep at Vertgen Farms

Here's a little behind the scenes from the farm. We've spent the last two days prepping beds in the greenhouse. New Reggae tunes on blast, bellies full of snacks from a surprise Mom visit, and wearing only a t-shirt in the greenhouse; it was great! Here's a step-by-step video of how Chris prepares each bed. From broadforking, to pulling weeds, a sprinkling of an all organic fertilizer, to a couple wheelbarrows of soil, followed by a good hard rake, a quick spin of a hand-drill powered tilther, and lastly a once over with a seedbed roller. Now that all the hard work is done and each bed has been prepped, it's time to start transplanting some baby seedlings into their new homes!
