Poinsettias are a great tradition to share this holiday season. These brightly coloured plants are sure to brighten up any home through these dark December days.

Did you know that the beautiful “petals” on the plant aren’t actually flowers? They’re lush red, white or green leaves. The flowers are actually the little yellow buds in the centre of the each collection of leaves (the collection of leaves is called a bracht).

On Monday, November 13 Bob Naylor, former owner and florist of McKellar’s Flowers, passed away. Our store will be closed Tuesday, November 14 and Wednesday, November 15 as the family mourns this tremendous loss.

As the world mourns the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, everyone at McKellar’s Flowers is reminded of the immense honour it was to have designed the bouquet of flowers that were presented to Her Majesty upon her arrival in Sarnia in 1959.

Did you know poinsettias are indigenous to Mexico? They are highly sensitive to cold temperatures and even a few minutes of exposure can cause them to wilt!

The best way to prolong the life of your poinsettia is to place it in a room with sufficient light and temperature of around 16-20 degrees C. Water when the soil begins to dry.
