Hey Sooke! Just got home after visiting Sooke Harbour House for Happy Hour (started at 3:00 pm). It is lovely! The patio is gorgeous, the views are spectacular and, even though the sea breeze was a bit chilly, there are blankets on every chair. The happy hour snacks are very tasty (I can recommend the chicken & waffles). The staff is very warm, welcoming & attentive. Chloe of their Marketing Department is having trouble gaining access to social media/website, etc. (passwords) and hopes to have this resolved next week. So happy it has re-opened 😀

Thank you so much to the kind folks from Zero Waste Sooke who volunteered time and expertise yesterday to help repair neighbours’ small appliances etc. at the Repair Cafe held at the Community Centre!

PLEASE NOTE SEEDS TO STEMS IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. We have recently learned that our home insurers will not provide coverage for a small home-based business that grows its own flowers. We are trying to find affordable insurance that will provide coverage. We’re so sad about this after all our hard work. We’ll update our website if and when the situation changes .

On Thursday, Dec 21st, at 6:30 pm, Friends of Sooke Parks Society will be hosting an all ages and all welcome Solstice Lantern Walk through John Phillips Park and the Stickleback Trail. Poster is attached.

We are hoping that you and your organization might be interested to participate.

The return route is about 1.5 kms and will run from John Phillips Park (by Municipal Hall) and along the Stickleback Trail towards Church Road before we circle back to the starting port. The event will last about an hour, including time for hot chocolate and a mingle at the end to admire the lanterns.

Here is what we are hoping you might help with:

1. Attend the event and bring a lantern!

2. Share our poster with your members, your social media, newsletter, etc.
3. If time and enthusiasm allows, host a lantern making workshop.

4. Get creative with your lantern. We will be sharing lantern ideas on Facebook and our website soon… and of course the internet is full of ideas from super simple to wildly elaborate. But truly even a flashlight qualifies.

5. Can you help us prepare and / or help on the night of the event?

We are looking for
- A decorations team. Let us know if you are interested in making some easy lanterns to hang along the route. We’ve got simple, inexpensive ideas to share and will provide the LED tea lights.
- A set up crew to hang the lanterns along the path
- A clean up crew to remove the lanterns after the walk
- If you have any battery operated lights / decorations that you would be willing to lend us for the event, please let us know

What’s blooming in my garden today (February 19, 2024)

Another bed weeded. It’s so nice to reveal all the plants that are waking up!

Beds 3 & 4 tidied and bed 5 started!

Wow! What cold weather we had last week. Today (24th January), I walked around the garden and the cold weather has definitely taken its toll. The ranunculus I was so pleased with is now looking pretty sad - all of the early prep. seems to have been dashed. I was hoping to cut some Hellebores and beautiful, fragrant Daphne but they too have been hit hard by the frost, even though they are very hardy. Mother Nature does always win, though I don’t think it is all bad - a dose of cold and a brief blanket of snow can be good for a garden. Daffodils are doing really well, as are some tulips. Other bulbs are popping up, thankfully reminding me where they are planted. Also today, I potted-on some seedlings: White Larkspur & multiple varieties of Lisianthus, which I’m particularly happy about. Tomorrow I have lots of different seeds to sow - I’m running out of room - better bring some of them into the house. 😸 I’m a little behind on sowing as last week was significant for a reason other than the weather. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Florence. She was such a lovely and cuddly cat. It was a very hard decision to make but it was the best one we could make for her. Even though she was 15 years old, it was still a shock as I took her into the vet because I could see she was under the weather, only to find out during the exam that she had a “mass” in her bladder. I never dreamt I wouldn’t be bringing her home with me. We miss her terribly. She was such a wonderful addition to our life.
