A Memory
A few years ago, we were asked to provide some interesting post-dinner entertainment for a group of lawyers and their spouses. We decided to get the fabulous Louise Pitre, Canada’s first lady of musical theatre. She had starred on Broadway in Mama Mia and received a Tony Award nomination for her role. Supported by a fabulous backup band in an intimate cabaret-style setting, she entertained with a selection of musical numbers that had the guests clapping and shouting for more.

Something Different
Several years ago, we were approached by a major Canadian ad agency to help organize a staff appreciation party. They chose the venue (Steam Whistle Brewery) and the theme (Sin Is In). While we loved the venue and had organized many events there, the theme was not anything we had worked with prior. This being a creative business, we didn’t think they wanted a conservative approach to the theme. We were right!

To say Joan and I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for décor related to the theme would be an understatement. What we finally settled on and what was approved by the ad agency was to hire models to represent the seven deadly sins - Gluttony, Sloth, Envy, Lust, Pride, Wrath, and Greed - as well as models to represent Adam and Eve and the devil. Adam, Eve, and the devil would greet guests outside at the entrance doors. The twist? The models would be body painted and then sc****ly dressed. When I say sc****ly dressed, I mean they were n**e covered with what the law required as a minimum, and then the rest of their bodies were expertly painted by professional make-up artists. They were then dressed in bits and pieces of fabric and given props to reflect their sin. Believe me when I say that where you think you see fabric on their upper torsos, it is painted on the skin. Elaborate wigs were used to complete the look of all the female models.

I think we achieved our goal as the ensuing photos will attest to. I remember that the models had to walk through part of the brewery to the reception area and, at the time, a group of German tourists were being taken around the shop on a tour. Their eyes bugged out when they saw the models. I do not speak German but some of their comments were expressed in English!

Please note that some of the photos shown were taken by Megan Vincent Photography.

During COVID, the events business, like so many other businesses, saw a severe downturn. We had to be creative when the few opportunities for business came our way. At Flip Events, we have a social client that we are especially fond of. We thought she could hold the dinner/dance she wanted to host to celebrate a special birthday. However, the Government closed the window of opportunity for her chosen date.
She challenged us to come up with something to help friends celebrate with her this special birthday. Joan and I decided on the following: individual gift boxes filled with a half bottle of V***e Clicquot champagne along with a box containing two Belgian truffles as well as a custom poem about the birthday girl, created by my ever-so-talented business partner, Joan, all presented in a beautiful pink box trimmed in gold - pink being her favorite colour -and hand-delivered to guests who would have been invited to the dinner/dance. These were a BIG hit with all her friends!
FYI, when COVID restrictions were taken away, we were able to organize a wonderful dinner/dance for her and her friends.

We were asked to organize a Day of the Dead themed party for a corporate client. We found these beautiful images and had them blown up to form the basis of the decor for the reception. They were awesome!

Photos of a corporate awards luncheon. Flip Events chose the theme "Superheroes" to honour the hard work of the employees. We designed the look of the tables to fit the theme and created a WOW look with lasers for the stage. Small red tins filled with smarties candy were placed on the tables as take-homes for each of the guests.

Another Flip Events reception. This time, a VIP reception for top sales people of a major Canadian corporation. We decided to hold the dinner in Canada's leading art glass gallery. We wanted to try something a little different. As per the photo, each table was dressed differently from the plates, cutlery and stemware to the tablecloths, napkins and chairs. The gallery kindly loaned us pieces of their glass art as the table centrepieces. The top salespeople are always being feted and we hoped this style would be something new for them. It was!
