While many of you drive,
I am a "professional driver."

What does this mean ? It means I have had to pass a driving exam every year for the last twelve years, and was paid to tranport items for ten years before that.

Here are some things I've learned as a professional driver.

PEDESTRIANS

A pedestrian facing a flashing or steady hand symbol should not begin to cross the road. The countdown light indicates how long you have to leave the roadway. As soon as it begins, you should stay on the curb. Maximum fine under municipal law is $85.00

CYCLISTS

Sharing the road doesn't always mean driving beside another vehicle. If you do not have your own lane, it's safest for you to be front and center, as it makes you more visible.

DRIVERS

All vehicles are to be centered in their lane. That means if a bicycle does not have a separate lane, they are allowed to be centered in yours. It's legal, and safer for them as it makes them more visible.

Never enter an intersection unless you are certain you can exit. You risk potential gridlock and are likely to get a fine.

Never put your car at an angle when turning. Face forward, then turn when it's safe. Go deep into the intersection. Use the space you're given.

Do not tailgate. This means allow for a minimum of one vechicle length in front of you at all times. Consider that the person ahead of you might be going the correct speed and simply leaving space in front of them.

Dual flashing lights are called hazard lights for a reason. That means wait and see what the person ahead of you is doing, which is a sensible thing at any time. No matter what maneuver they might be doing, only a police officer can stop them. So be cautious.

U Turns are not always the fastest way to correct yourself. Sometimes it's easier to just drive around the block.

Remember that not all unusual behaviors are malicious. Many people are lost.
