As professional dj's we often hear potential clients searching for an "affordable dj"!
By affordable do they mean the dj rates are a inexpensive or just cheap in value?
If by affordable they mean a professional dj, charging cheap prices, there is no such thing.
There are dj services that are a good value because of what they include in their fees, however affordable denotes cheap, and anything cheap is usually never of good quality.
Asking a professional dj to reduce their fees to work within a budget is actually a denegration of their talent and skill.
A good quality professional dj charges what they do because they are #1 worth the fee and #2 have many costs to incur to maintain their business's.
What are costs that Dj's have to pay out to run their companies/businesses?
#1 EQUIPMENT: Quality equipment can cost $5000 - $10,000 even for entry level equipment.
#2 Insurance for equipment and liability: This can cost upwards of $100 -$ 500 per month depending on provider.
#3 Music memberships & licenses: a monthly or yearly fee to maintain awesome up to date music libraries $20 to $50 per month.
#4 Vehicle expenses, insurance & fuel: A van or suv to transport equipment to and from events.
After all of these expenses that dj's must pay to give their clients the ultimate experience, a cheaper fee means that the dj might receive minimum wage for their talent & and time. And most professionals would never provide their time and skills for minimum wage in any industry.
Remember you are paying for value.
To ask a professional dj to charge less than they are worth is also diminishing the quality and importance of your event.

Why does a floor plan matter to a DJ? 🤔

This is one of the most common discussions and pain points among DJs.

There is a lot to consider here, but ultimately, there is a common consensus that DJs belong near dance floors. It seems logical, but ironically, more often than not, we are shuffled off to a corner or some awkward position so the cake can occupy a prime spot while we are forced to blast sound towards tables 4 and 6, or we are sometimes in a completely separate location from where the party is.

Yes, we have technology that allows us to put sound almost anywhere. However, we shouldn’t have to make ridiculous layouts work. Event professionals and venues should care about great outcomes for the couple and all their vendors. Layouts are a big part of it.

At the end of the day, we do what we have to do. No contract requirements or agreement provisions are going to fix layout problems. The truth is, we’ve got to make it work because that’s what we are paid to do.

That said…

There is a difference between seeing the dance floor and “feeling” like you’re part of the dance floor. This is why DJs push for a central location so hard.

The little things shouted by the crowd, cheers, smiles, body language, pointing, fist bumps, thumbs up, dance circles, or other unique moments happening on the dance floor may not be seen or felt because we aren’t where we should be—near the action.

This can impact the song choices we make, how we MC, how we engage with your crowd, or even what spotlight moments can or can’t happen. Being present is a big part of what we do. That’s why we care about layouts. It leads to better outcomes. It’s not about being the center of attention; it’s about making sure you and your guests are at the center of ours.

It is ighly recommended that if you are looking for a DJ for your wedding or special event, do your research on the DJ. Don’t get discouraged because that DJ's prices might be higher then other DJ’s you priced. DJ’s charges because of the experience, the quality and the professionalism they will bring to your event. Some DJ’s will charge a low price because of the lack of experience and you could be the one with regrets in the end. Remember you are paying for quality professional services from a DJ !!
