Year-round Festivals Series 45 - Christmas Eve - Let's set up the Christmas tree!

In most European and American countries, Christmas Eve, 24 December, is one of the most important celebrations of the Christmas season.

Little angels, red bows, lit candles, golden stars, and twinkling little light bulbs fill the Christmas tree. Christmas Eve is traditionally the day to set up the Christmas tree, but with the early start of Christmas activities, Christmas trees are already being set up in the United States after Thanksgiving.

Modern Christmas trees originated in Central Europe, particularly in Estonia, Germany and Latvia. It was during the early Renaissance in Europe. It is said that the Protestant reformer Martin Luther was the first to light a candle on an evergreen tree.

Nowadays, Christmas trees are made of plastic for environmental reasons, and the materials used to decorate them are the inspiration of many designers and artists. The variety of Christmas trees today is overwhelming.

When a Christmas tree is lit up in a city, it is a sign that the city's Christmas celebrations are about to begin!

"Silent Night, Holy Night"

The name of the Chinese holiday, Christmas Eve, originated from a very popular traditional Christmas carol called "Silent Night".

The song was written in German by Joseph Mohr and composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, the headmaster of an Austrian primary school. The song has been translated into 44 languages and is one of the most popular Christmas songs. It is the most popular Christmas song, and people sing it naturally, even without musical accompaniment. The song was first performed on 24 December 1818 at the local church of St. Nicholas in Oppendorf, Austria.

For two thousand years, people have celebrated Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the Bible has never recorded the day on which Jesus Christ was born, the only thing that is certain is that He was born at night.

In the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, it is written that a new star appeared in the sky at the time of Jesus' birth, and the Three Doctors of the East found the place of Jesus' birth and offered their gifts based on the sight of that star high in the midnight sky. In the second chapter of Luke's Gospel, the Bible tells of the angel of the Lord appearing to the poorest shepherds, who were keeping watch over their flocks in the middle of the night in the wilderness of the mountains, and reporting to them the birth of Jesus Christ. This group of the poorest of the poor, working at the margins of society, were the first to hear the astonishing good news that has subsequently shaped two thousand years of human cultural development. Both of these accounts prove that Jesus was born at night.

This historical record is also the origin of Christmas Eve. In addition, the story of the birth of Jesus was told on Christmas Eve night, following the example of the angels who told the story of the birth of Jesus. The story has been told through artistic creations, such as fine art, architecture, literature, theatre or dance, and has remained a treasure in human history and culture.

Year-round Festivals Series 44 - Advent and the start of the Christmas markets!

As December approaches, the Christmas atmosphere in the city starts to grow more intense. Many people choose to travel to Europe to experience the snowy winter weather and a very different Christmas atmosphere from Asia!

Have you ever visited a Christmas market in a European town? Christmas markets are held in European towns and cities from 1 December until Christmas Eve.

Christmas is a time for family reunion in Europe, just like the Chinese Winter Feast or the Chinese New Year. The Christmas market that ends on Christmas Eve also reminds me of the flower market in Hong Kong that ends on the night of the 30th day of the Lunar New Year. The two markets are also convenient for people to do shopping before the family reunion, not only for food, but also for decorative items for the home.

The earliest Christmas market dates back to the late Middle Ages in German-speaking Europe. Christmas markets can be linked to the celebration of Advent, a four-week Christian festival, and have become a popular custom throughout Europe and the United States.

In Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the beginning of the Christmas markets also symbolises the arrival of Advent. Christmas markets are usually held in the city centre, selling food, drink and seasonal goods, accompanied by singing and dancing.

The world's first Christmas market was the Striezelmarkt in Dresden, Germany, first held in 1434. Nowadays, the world's first Christmas market has grown to a very large scale. The vast city centre with 240 Christmas stalls attracts more than two million visitors from all over the world. The large Christmas markets in Frankfurt and Stuttgart also attract three million visitors a year.

The most fascinating things to see at a Christmas market are the exquisite handmade artisan carvings, the farmer's meats and the wide range of sausages and game. Popular attractions such as nativity scenes and stalls selling nutcracker carvings, roasted almonds, traditional Christmas gingerbread and mulled wine are the highlights of the market!

Drinking hot red wine in the snowy sub-zero temperatures is one of my fondest memories of my time studying in East Germany!

Year-round Festivals Series 43 - St Nicholas' Day - Is there really a Santa Claus?

Does Santa Claus, a popular character, really exist?

Santa Claus is inspired by a real person. The answer could be found in the English name of Santa Claus. The Dutch word Sinterklaas is the origin of Santa Claus. 6 December is the anniversary of the death of St. Nicholas and is also celebrated as a holy day, which is a popular commemoration in Europe and the United States.

Born in Patara, Turkey in 280 A.D., Nicholas was known for his generosity. In a Christian story, he gave money to a poor father to prevent him from selling his daughters into slavery because the father had no money to pay for the dowry of his three daughters. In the story, Nicholas threw gold coins through the family's window and the money landed in their shoes, which were cooling in the fireplace.

In Poland and Ukraine, it is a tradition that children wait for gifts to be placed under their pillows on St Nicholas Day. Those who do well will find a gift; those who don't will find a twig or a small charcoal under their pillow.

The placing of presents in Christmas stockings and the dropping of presents down the chimney by Santa Claus at Christmas are also inspired by the story of St Nicholas dropping coins through the window.

Generosity is an important spiritual value on St Nicholas Day. St Nicholas' parents died young and left him a large inheritance. Having lost his parents, he decided to use his wealth to help and rescue the poor, those who were less fortunate than him. The kindness of young Nicholas made me feel how beautifully he was raised by his parents. Generosity is not a noble trait to be born with, it is a sacrifice. The tragic loss of his parents did not make him cynical or lament his misfortune. We can also imagine that St Nicholas' parents were also very generous.

St Nicholas Day is one of the most important festivals in Western Christianity and marks the arrival of Christmas. St Nicholas Day also falls during an important Christian festival: Advent.

Advent is a period of preparation and waiting for the celebration of Christmas, the New Year of the Church. This year, Advent will begin on the 1st of December, a time when people remember the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, when he was born in Bethlehem, and look forward with eager anticipation to the Lord's second coming and return to Jerusalem.

Coca-Cola's Santa Claus

The image of Santa Claus in his red suit, eyeglasses and Santa hat that we see today was created by the Coca-Cola Company in the United States.

In the American tradition, Santa Claus always rides happily into the night sky on Christmas Eve on a sleigh with six reindeer and boxes of presents. Late at night, he would climb down chimneys from house to house to deliver presents to children. The image of Santa Claus became popular with the Coca-Cola Company through massive publicity.

In the United States and Canada, Santa Claus is believed to live in the Arctic. Santa Claus can be found all year round in Finland's Santa Claus Village, where you can feel the Christmas spirit all year round.

Year-Round Festival Series 42 - Thanksgiving - To be 100 times more successful, you need to be 100 times more thankful!

Turkey, mashed potatoes, pies, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and football games... These are the hallmarks of Thanksgiving for most American families. On Thanksgiving Day, American families prepare a hearty meal for their loved ones to share.

On the fourth Thursday of November every year, Thanksgiving is a time for family reunion in the United States. The four-day Thanksgiving holiday in the United States is a time to celebrate and give thanks for God's abundant blessings throughout the year. Thanksgiving also marks the beginning of the winter holidays, including Christmas and New Year.

The history of Thanksgiving can be traced back to 1620, when a passenger ship, the Mayflower, sailed from Plymouth to Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, USA, carrying a group of Christian families who were travelling to explore God's kingdom with passion and fearless courage.

This group of Christian families travelled from England to the unknown of North America. Because of storms, they arrived in Plymouth in the winter, not where they were expected. It was winter, they were hungry and cold, and half of the Christians died of disease. With the help of the natives, they learned to hunt, plant corn and pumpkins, and had their first harvest the following year. This is how the first Thanksgiving came about. They also celebrated God's bounty with the original inhabitants who helped them. Honouring and appreciating those who have not yet received the Gospel opens their hearts and minds to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God's ways are always better than our thoughts. These white Christians also brought the full legal system and other modern ideas to the indigenous people. These white Christians also brought the full legal system and other modern ideas to the indigenous people.

This small group of Christian families, with God's grace and promise of never failing, eventually pioneered the country in the spirit of Christ and established their own constitution. The United States of America became the brand new nation from which the Christians had come, and is now the leading nation in the world.

To be 100 times more successful, you need to be 100 times more grateful.

Gratitude is the most important spirit of Thanksgiving. In addition to being grateful for the love of the people around you, the invisible God is the most important thing to focus on during Thanksgiving.

"To be 100 times more successful, you need to be 100 times more grateful." I quote a teacher, and it encourages me. Maybe we have everything we need to have a good life, but it's all about our vision and how well we use the things around us.

About gratitude, it reminds me of the film "Forrest Gump". Forrest Gump, with an IQ of only 75, was bullied since he was a child. However, because of his innocence and love, he lived a wonderful and fruitful life. Forrest Gump has always taken things as they come, and despite being diagnosed with a low IQ in his childhood, he has accomplished things that many people would never be able to do in a lifetime.

Year-round Festival Series 41 - National Novel Writing Month - Find Your Gift!

Based in the United States, National Novel Writing Month is a fairly large-scale global writing event that began in 1999 when freelance writer Chris Baty launched a creative writing event in San Francisco Bay in July of that year.

Twenty-one participants entered the event. The event was moved to November, and to make the most of this "miserable" month, the writer invited a friend to design an official website welcoming challengers from all over the world to take part in the competition: a 50,000-word English novel challenge to be completed in 30 days in November. Participants need to complete 1,667 words per day.

By 2022, more than 413,295 people have participated, including 85,000 students and educators in the Young Writers Programme. The rapid growth of the programme is testament to the passion people have for writing and the number of outstanding novels that have gone on to become authors with prestigious publishers in the challenge.

Overcoming Fiction Author's Perfectionism

The event has not only nurtured a number of new writers, but has also made many people's writing dreams come true. For one month, participants were encouraged to write a story outline, update their progress on the official website at regular intervals, and read the words of encouragement from other participants, so that they would not be alone in their writing.

I have also heard about the problem of procrastination on the part of writers, and some of them even failed to finish their novels even after years of delay. It seems that the perfectionism of writers is similar to that of artists!

To finish a 50,000-word English novel in one month is not an easy challenge. Does it always produce good writing? Not necessarily, but it can be a way to break the shackles of procrastination, and it can also be a way to get the motivation back to write by making the material into a better novel!

Find Your Gift: What do you want to say to the world?

This platform, with many enthusiastic participants, has also recorded the stories of many writers who have become writers as a result of this programme. Even writers who are already writers are looking forward to a breakthrough in their writing by participating in this fast-paced writing programme.

One of the most inspiring stories is that of author Maia Kobabe, which I have abbreviated below:

Long before Kobabe was asked to write anything as a child, she wanted to be a writer. Her childhood was steeped in storybooks, and her parents took me to the local library every week, where she checked out piles and pairs of fantasy novels.

She would pick up any book with elves, swords, castles or spaceships on the cover. Her idols were the authors and illustrators of these magical worlds. So she began to wonder about writers: Who are they? What were their lives like? She began to pay more attention to authors' prefaces and was surprised to find that my favourite authors often mentioned each other.

This made her realise that they all knew each other and were friends with each other. So she thought, she'll publish a fantasy novel, and she'll have a chance to get to know them. So for the many times she participated in this National Creative Writing Month, she wrote fantasy novels. But none of these novels mentioned other major issues in her life: gender, identity.

When she found out that my fantasy novels could not be published, she was quite distressed. However, she changed her direction, and she became more articulate about the big issues in my life, and the feeling of being stuck and unsure of what to do next disappeared. All it took was perseverance and bravery to follow that path.

Eventually she became a writer and met other writers and became friends with them. Although they were not her idols as a teenager, they shared the same themes and issues she explored in her work.

She advises young writers to focus not just on pouring out words, but more on setting out

โ€œWhat message, hope, fear, question, or truth are you trying to communicate to the world through your writing?

I promise that clearly articulating your themes will help you tell your story and find the friends and writers who will become your community.โ€

Year-round Festival Series 40 - Culture Day - The strength and softness of Japanese culture

For those of you who love Japanese art and culture, this Friday is Japan's " Culture Day"! This is a special public holiday in Japan where people can visit art galleries and museums for free to experience Japanese culture and art.

The Culture Day has evolved from the Meiji Festival, the birthday of Emperor Meiji on 3 November, which was then known as the "Tenchล-setsu". After the end of World War II, Japan announced a new constitution on 3 November 1946, which advocated peace and culture, and the Japanese government designated 3 November as the "Culture Day".

The most notable feature of the Culture Day is the awarding of the Order of Culture by the Emperor to scientists and artists who have made remarkable achievements in the development of science, technology, art and culture. We are familiar with such recipients as the artist Yayoi Kusama, the architect Tadao Ando, and the writer Yasunari Kawabata.

The sophistication of Japanese art has always been astonishing. The dedication and perseverance of the Japanese are also admirable. Just look at the Japanese culinary culture, the pursuit of perfection and the art-like cuisine has fascinated people all over the world, and many have made Japanese food their favourite.

You and I are not the only ones who want to learn more about the Japanese people and their culture. The Chrysanthemum and The Sword, a study of the Japanese people, provides an insightful analysis of the character and traditions of the Japanese people. The book originated at the end of World War II, when anthropologist Ruth Benedict was commissioned by the U.S. government to use cultural anthropology to study the impending defeat of Japan and produce a comprehensive report that would help the U.S. government understand the country. The book has become a classic for Westerners who are curious about Japanese culture.

As the name of the book suggests, the Japanese are a mixture of soft chrysanthemums and sharp blades, a paradoxical duality of character: the pursuit of softness and beauty, yet the admiration of force; polite, yet very aggressive; obedient, yet difficult to tame; gentle and courteous, yet arrogant in their hearts. The book points out that the duality of the hierarchy and customs in Japanese society stems from the great divide between early childhood education and adult upbringing in Japan, which seriously affects the dual character of the Japanese people as adults.

When we talk about Japan, we have to mention the Japanese sakura. The sakura, which blooms in March and April, is also a symbol of Japanese culture. The blossoming of the sakura, which only lasts for a short time, is the reason why it touches the hearts of Japanese people, as the beauty of the sakura is felt at its peak during its short life, and then fades away at the brightest moment.

As an island nation, Japan's culture is constantly absorbing foreign cultures, while at the same time maintaining its own characteristics. During the Meiji Restoration period, large-scale industrialisation and urbanisation took place throughout the country, resulting in a blossoming of Japanese cultural ecology and the birth of a large number of outstanding literary writers and artists. Japan, along with the United Kingdom and the United States, is one of the world's great cultural powers. The Culture Day has also witnessed the emergence of Japanese talents and the transmission and breakthrough of Japanese culture.

YEAR-ROUND FESTIVAL SERIES 39 - HALLOWEEN - DON'T LET IT GET TOO SCARY!

The last Sunday of October is the end of Daylight Saving Time in Western Europe. Halloween is celebrated in many countries during the change of autumn and winter. How to celebrate Halloween with children is something for adults to think about. Educational Halloween children's books can not only satisfy children's excitement for exciting things, but also cultivate children's reading habit through storybooks.

Wonderful stories can make children develop the habit of reading without them realising it. It is a challenge to choose thrilling Halloween storybooks that are educational and age-appropriate for children.

As a reminder, parents need to read through the Halloween storybooks and discuss the meaning with their children so that they will not be indoctrinated with wrong concepts at a young age, such as "trick or treating is right", challenging the authority of adults, and other rebellious concepts. It is also incorrect to train children to be brave just for the sake of being scared.

Sooner or later, children will be exposed to all that Halloween has to offer, so planting the seeds of correctness in their minds at an early age will help them to make their own choices about what is right in their teenage years.

Just the right amount of resilience to deal with just the right amount of fear.

Daniel Goleman, author of the popular psychological book Emotional Intelligence, which has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year and has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, has also written another book, Social Intelligence, which talks about the pressures children face when dealing with fear and how to help them deal with and digest fear. This book talks about the pressures children face when dealing with fear, and how to help children deal with and digest fear.

Quoting another psychologist, Richard Davidson, he writes, โ€œWe can learn to be resilient by being exposed to a threat or stress at a level that allows us to manage it. If we are exposed to too little stress, nothing will be learned; too much and [a childโ€™s] brain and body stay stuck in the fear-aroused modeโ€ฆ then whatโ€™s being [learned] is not resilience, but the failure to recover.โ€

There are a number of resources online that teach parents what to expect before Halloween arrives. The following is a brief summary:

1. Help children to understand that underneath the spooky costumes are normal children and adults.
2. Reflective or fluorescent materials can be attached to the children's costumes so that they can be seen clearly during nighttime activities.
3. Make a deal on the amount of candy the kids can eat on Halloween.
4. Adults can accompany children to complete Halloween activities, or older children can take care of younger ones.
5. Teach children to be safe in traffic and to walk on the pavements with their friends, never alone.
6. Set a bedtime for your child on Halloween. Go to bed early to give your child time to calm down and sleep.

YEAR-ROUND FESTIVALS SERIES 38 - HALLOWEEN - IS IT RIGHT TO MAKE TROUBLE?

Halloween is celebrated on 31st October every year. The festival is popular in western countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

Nowadays, this festival has evolved into a folk custom. The Celtic peoples of Britain believed that the souls of the dead would return to their former dwellings on the night of 31st October, so they would put on masks and walk around their villages in order to frighten away these souls. They do this out of fear, hoping that they will not get hurt.

Halloween is one of the favourite holidays for children because it is a day when they can legitimately go trick-or-treating!

โ€œTrick or Treat?โ€ is a Halloween-specific children's activity. Traditionally, they dress up as ghosts and go door-to-door with a large group of children or accompanied by an adult to visit their neighbours. Together, the children say "Trick or treat?" to their neighbours, and if the adult chooses not to give them any sweets, they have to go on a trick-or-treating spree.

It's not easy for children to learn today. They have a lot of homework and many tutorial classes to attend. Expectations from parents, relatives and schools are really overwhelming. If we look at Halloween from this perspective, it could be a fun time for adults and children to play together.

Before and after Halloween, parents have a responsibility to remind their children that they should respect others. Respecting elders such as parents and teachers is also a good attitude for students to have. This produces children with good character and manners.

HELPING CHILDREN BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE: THE UNIQUE SELF

Last Halloween, I introduced a children's storybook "BOO, LITTLE BEASTIE!" by Matt Robertson. The story begins with Bertie the Beast's longing to make friends. On the night of Halloween, Bertie doesn't have to hide his sharp teeth and roar any more, he mixes with a group of children dressed up as ghosts and blends in with them naturally.

The little wild beast in this story reminds us of the time when we were studying in school, there were always one or two kids who were more mischievous and looked like bullies. In fact, what this bully really wants is to be accepted and cared for. This book also teaches children to accept their classmates, especially those who are different from them.
