OK, I’M NOT OK!!

I am actually, but that’s a nod to one of Maia’s singles off of her new album out on May 10th (Acronym/Universal).

I’m lucky enough to be promoting my pal Maia’s first-ever gig in PEI but she’s no stranger to these shores. We connected a few years ago through my day job at Music PEI and since then Maia has been working with a ton of PEI artists like KINLEY, Brandon Howard Roy, and the local support for this show, Noah Malcolm!

From Montreal but making homes all over the world, Maïa Davies is an award-winning, Juno and ECMA nominated, SOCAN #1 bilingual Canadian songwriter, recording artist and producer. Her new collection of sorrowful, introspective songs for her upcoming solo release on Acronym/Universal (May 10th) is packed with piano-driven compositions that instantly and intentionally recall the incandescent baroque pop of Tori Amos and Kate Bush. Her new body of work finds Davies wistfully weaving elements of pop and classical into well-crafted motifs, tempering the lyrical sting with nostalgic melodies and buttery vocals. The result is a musical tale shared with empathy and composed with heart, confessional and piercing in its intimacy and scope.

Come feel and heal with us, we want to fill the room with VIBES so if the cost is a barrier please send me a DM and we’ll make sure you’re there with us.

I have many other updates to share from our fundraiser back in November (what is time) so keep checking back as I return to the internet to share the beauty of that show and more updates about summer plans! We’re back from hibernation bbs!

🌈 LIKE A MOTORCYCLE | JULY 22ND | BABA'S LOUNGE | 10 PM 🌈

"They're clever but not glib, scrappy but not hardened, and seem to know how to confront crimes of the heart without yielding to them."
-Alison Lang (HERizons Magazine)

Returning to break their Charlottetown curse (missing band members, broken guitars, food poising, and more), Like A Motorcycle is a full frontal attack to a soundtrack - an onslaught of erratic q***rs and one, very, patient man. With emotionally laden themes held tightly behind a shield of snotty petulance, they are not here to take themselves too seriously. Like A Motorcycle could beat you up but would rather fix you dinner. Endlessly entertaining both themselves and the crowd, their on-stage antics and captivating online presence create an unforgettable experience.

😷 This is a small venue, it will be tight quarters, please consider masking up.

Russell Louder (they/them) is a songwriter, producer and performer born and raised in Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island, Canada). Their music is carried by a powerful clear voice reminiscent of Florence and the Machine, Eurythmics and La Roux. You only have to see them in concert once to fall for the luminous and authentic world they've built - both poignant and danceable. In 2021, Russell released their debut album, Humor, on Lisbon Lux Records to critical acclaim, including being selected for the prestigious Polaris Prize longlist. Their single, Hello Stranger, stayed on CBC Music's Top 20 list for 4 consecutive weeks following the album's release. Russell currently pays rent in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal, CA) while their heart waits for them on the shores of Epekwitk.

🌀✨🌀✨🌀

Somewhere Soon is an instrumental project influenced by genres like pop, hip hop, funk, rnb, soul, and trap. Music composed and performed by keyboardist Hannah Melanson, and brought to life by their incredible band featuring Joey Esker on drums, and Maya Marques on bass.

Tangerine is a Christmas movie and you can't tell us otherwise!

Tangerine (2015)
Friday, December 30th at 9PM

An exuberantly raw and up-close portrait of one of Los Angeles’ more distinctive sex-trade subcultures. Tangerine (2015) is centred around two sharply drawn transgender women who find the resilience of their friendship tested and affirmed over the course of one busy Christmas Eve.

Come join us for the LAST film in the Q***r Film Friday series. We've been showing q***r AF content monthly on the big screen at City Cinema since July and I can't believe it's coming to an end. Hope to see so many lovely faces in the theatre on Friday!

TONIGHT!

Tonight at 9PM City Cinema

A Fantastic Woman, directed by Sebastián Lelio, is the second film in the q***r film series presented in collaboration with Lacuna Events

A Fantastic Woman tells the story of Marina, whose life is turned upside down by the death of her partner. Mourning the loss of the man she loved, she finds herself under intense scrutiny from those with no regard for her privacy.

Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film, A Fantastic Woman is one of the few films that actually change the world we live in, and rarer are the cases where a film award makes a real difference. The Oscar win for A Fantastic Woman was used by Chilean LBGTQ activists to speed up local discussions on a gender identity bill. Chile subsequently approved laws allowing transgender citizens to change their official contact information in late 2018.

✨ As you may notice, we've done a bit of rebranding for our film series. Out of respect for our entire q***r fam, we've adjusted the name to Q***r Film Fridays.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The reclamation of language is an ongoing journey and a deeply personal one. I want to make sure that the folks who make up our beautiful community are comfortable attending LACUNA events and it was brought to my attention that the previous name used was something that caused discomfort.

"Q***r" is also a term that has been/ is being reclaimed by our community, and I recognize that some might still not relate to the term. However, as a non-binary trans person, I deeply connect with the freedom in language, expression, and being provided by the use of the word q***r. So this is where we have landed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope all my q***r babes understand and respect our decision to rebrand.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🎞 🌈 On another note, we have locked in almost ALL of our QFF films for the series! Swipe to see what we've got planned for you in the upcoming months! 🌈 🎞
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks again to and for their ongoing support of this project.
