Native Heritage Spotlight: Day 12—Native Innovations in Environmental Sustainability

Long before “sustainability” was a buzzword, Native nations across North America practiced methods now seen as key to climate resilience. Indigenous knowledge systems, passed down through generations, focused on living in harmony with the land.

Nations like the Karuk, Yurok, and Ho-Chunk used controlled burns, or “cultural burning,” to manage forests, promote healthy ecosystems, and reduce wildfire risks. These intentional fires cleared underbrush, enriched the soil, and encouraged the growth of medicinal plants and food sources. Today, environmental experts are recognizing the value of these ancient practices.

The Haudenosaunee developed “Three Sisters” agriculture, planting corn, beans, and squash together. This sustainable method improved soil health, maximized yields, and conserved water, making it an early form of permaculture that boosted biodiversity.

Seed preservation is another critical practice. Nations like the Cherokee and Mohawk have long maintained seed banks, protecting diverse crop varieties adapted to local environments. This work supports food security and biodiversity, offering resilience against climate change.

These Indigenous practices aren’t just historical—they provide a blueprint for sustainable living today. Next time you hear about wildfire management, permaculture, or seed saving, remember that these innovations have deep roots in Native communities. 🌱🔥🌾

Some of the 2000+ carved pumpkins will be heading to Quillowfarm, Stanley's Olde Maple Lane Farm, Madahoki Farm and Sweet William Farms to feed the bellies of animals and regenerate soil.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day 🧡

Today, we honour and remember. 🧡

From the heart of Madahoki Farm, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities on both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

This day is a commitment to acknowledge the history and impact of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples. It’s a day to honour the survivors, the children who never came home, and the intergenerational trauma experienced by many.

The inspiration for Orange Shirt Day comes from Phyllis Webstad. In 1974, Phyllis arrived at the Mission residential school, excited and proud of her new orange shirt. But that shirt was taken from her, a poignant symbol of the loss suffered by so many.

Join us in wearing your orange shirt today to show your support and solidarity. The orange shirt has become a powerful symbol—of hope, reconciliation, and a commitment to a better future. By wearing an orange shirt today, you make a statement to support reconciliation and commit to the enduring truth that EVERY CHILD MATTERS.

Let’s come together to ensure that this history is never forgotten and to support the healing journey of Indigenous communities.
Join us in standing together for truth and reconciliation. ✊🧡
