I had the pleasure of photographing Andria and Cody’s engagement shoot over the weekend in one of their go-to hiking / dog-walking spots, the South March Highlands Conservation Forest in Kanata. Addy and Mason, their gorgeous doggo companions were also present and doing whatever they wanted which was a rewarding challenge :-)

I can't wait for their wedding next year - they have a fairy tale forest adventure planned by the river in Foresters Falls.

To celebrate Notting Hill Carnival in London, UK this weekend, here is a series of photos I took there 11 years ago in 2013. I'm glad to have been witness to the vibrance, energy, and chaos, but I was not a fan of squeezing onto the tube after the event with a thousand other sweaty carnival goers 😅

What is it like to have me as your wedding photographer? I wrote about it here: https://photographersara.ca/candid-wedding-photographer/

As a Candid Wedding Photographer, the goal for me is that each photograph is a testament to the genuine, unscripted moments that define your celebration.

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of documenting David and Alexandra's beautiful wedding at Fairmont Le Château Montebello. Despite the heat warnings, they put on a fabulous intimate party for friends and family. These photos are a little sneak preview of their day...more to come...

A decade has passed since I took this photo of Ellie at her wedding...lovely memories.

"Memory is the only thing that binds you to earlier selves; for the rest, you become an entirely different being every decade or so, sloughing off the old persona, renewing and moving on. You are not who you were, he told her, nor who you will be." (Sebastian Faulks)

Professional Wedding Photographer - A definition.
It may seem obvious to many how they would define a wedding photographer, but what sets them apart from guests wielding smart phones and how has the profession evolved since its inception?
https://photographersara.ca/professional-wedding-photographer-a-definition/

As a professional wedding photographer based in Ottawa, I saw a massive shift in the industry from 2020 onwards after COVID-19. However, it wouldn't be the first time this industry has reinvented itself.

📸 Documentary Wedding Photography: Capturing Authentic Moments 📸

I am pleased to share my latest blog post that digs into the question of what documentary wedding photography is. In short, this approach focuses on capturing genuine, candid moments that tell the true story of your special day (or days). If you are planning a wedding and seek a photographer who values authenticity and natural storytelling, this article is a must-read.

A Documentary Wedding Photographer is expected to alter as little as possible from reality & provide viewers with an experience similar to the original event.

Looking for wedding reception entertainment ideas? I've seen a few impersonators at weddings and it lifted the energy of the room every time and brought everyone to the dance floor. This wedding had a Vegas theme and they hired an Elvis impersonator for the evening entertainment. It was so much fun to photograph!

I'm working on writing a blog post about Storytelling in wedding photography. Sometimes the stories are less factual and more poetic, which I like to think this one is.

This image shows the bride in the foreground and her mother reflected in the mirror behind her. It looks like she is looking at herself in the mirror, but from my perspective, I see her mother. It was taken after the ceremony in a little room to the side of the altar in a local Church building just before the papers were signed.

This moment reminds me of the importance of ceremony. It marks a clear shift in your life and this bride felt that in this moment. In the first image, I noticed her mood shift as she made final adjustments to her dress. She actually asked me to leave the room at this point as she was feeling overwhelmed. Her joy is obvious in the second image after vows had been said and family celebrated around her.

Leslie had the most stunning fascinator. A designer usually knows how to accessorize well. I looked for a quote about fascinators but didn't find one worthy. So here's one about hats.

"I love Canada. It makes a nice hat for America. When America runs out of water, it's the first place I'll go." Ryan Reynolds.

An unconventional wedding.
The venue for the reception was a disused Church where one of the guests was living (squatting?). 'Homes for All' was spray painted on the outside wall. Origami decorated the space and the bride wore sandals. My kind of wedding.

I've been tidying up my archives and found these photos that I completely forgot about. I asked my eldest to help me test some lighting for a portrait shoot. So here she is. A Portrait of my beautiful eldest (baby) daughter from 2013. She was 8 going on 9. Now she is 19 going on...(I'll let you guess).
(I knitted that lovely cardigan she has on by the way)

The tea ceremony. And the handing over of much gold and red envelopes. I'm excessively grateful to be a part of these stories. I love that photography gives me a window into other people's lives and cultures. I'm more of an introvert by nature, so I'm glad to have my camera as an excuse to peek into other worlds.

Getting Ready. I love it when I can document people in their homes. The little details help me get to know the people I'm photographing. And the environment sets the scene for a photo story like this one. I think I pointed out hands in my last post. There are all kinds of hand stories here as well.

. This wedding has all kinds of stories in it for me. Some of the guests were members of our local Church and the ceremony was in a building steeped in history (Southwark Cathedral). But these two are little moments of joy that happened after the ceremony. The fingers in the first image tell everything - the intensity of a joyous embrace. The second is of two women, both married to vicars, and at the time of the photo one had just retired and the other just stepped into their calling...

I love the golden fabric and sparkly shoes in this image. It's from the same wedding shoot that I styled myself back in London Town. This was shot in the back of a disused shop in Catford.

"The portrait of a person is one of the most difficult things to do. It means you must almost bring the presence of that person photographed to other people in such a way that they don't have to know that person personally, but that they are still confronted with a human being that they won't forget. That's a portrait." -Paul Strand

Random stories at the edges of weddings...
I rode in a taxi with this bride on the way to the reception. I love how she looks so fabulous (and slightly stressed) with her bejeweled dress and bouquet in hand and this guy outside the glass in his paint-spattered clothes is taking a break on the street and lighting up a fag.

Another self portrait from last weekend. Second image was one of the many outtakes with Lola the dog. She only wanted to look at me and not the camera, and then left the room because she was suspicious of what I was planning.

Taken using self timer with my on a tripod with the Fujinon 35mm f1.4
