My Perspective

“Manufactured” or staged photography does not concern me. And if I make a judgement it can only be on a psychological or sociological level. There are those that take photographs arranged beforehand and those who go out to discover the image and seize it. For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms

, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to “give a meaning” to the world, one has to feel oneself involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, a discipline of mind, and a sense of geometry.

The late, great Cartier-Bresson said it best. The aim is to capture the true spirit and emotion of the moment by documenting its unique essence. It is all about telling your story and not me portraying mine. The key principle behind my way of working is to be as unobtrusive as possible. My goal when photographing any event is to let the individual personality shine through. As such, I tend to favour nature lighting and a hands-off approach to the day’s events instead of focusing on staging elaborate and cheesy poses. I like people and am genuinely interested in finding out what makes them tick. As a photographer, it is important for me to take a messy canvas of the moment; subtract and focus on the essence of human connection of emotion, love, intimacy and humor. This can only be achieved if we all feel comfortable around each other; therefore I strive on developing good working relationships and open discussions of your expectations and desires prior to the event. The end result is that I get to work closer with you without being noticed, which in turn means I can shoot the defining moments of the day as they unfold without people suddenly stop what they are doing and stare straight into to the camera. The dynamic of the event is left as uncompromised as possible, which leads to more powerful and emotionally authentic images for you to look back on. David and his team at Pear Tree Photography are just wonderful people. They captured our wedding day in the most exquisite way. We are still in awe of the pictures and the short video they made… And ladies and gentlemen, you definitely want to add the video portion to capture your memories… you’ll be so happy you did and have a life-long memory of your special day. They do such an amazing job capturing moments and highlighting the best part of your special day. We are soooo happy that we found Pear Tree (and on Instagram of all random places!) and would hire them again in a heartbeat. Their professionalism is phenomenal and communication is top notch. David and Sasha photographed our wedding and they were awesome to work with!

We opted to not get engagement photos before the wedding so I was a bit nervous about how things would go on the wedding day.

David and Sasha were very relaxed and fun to work with. I am an extremely awkward person but David and Sasha made me feel at ease right away.

They were also very good at blending into the crowd and at least from our perspective they didn't disrupt the wedding trying to get shots.

We just got some sample images and they are lovely! Initially we were also thinking of only asking for one photographer on the day to save some money. David convinced us to go with two photographers and I'm glad we did. Having two photographers allowed them to get some great shots of us, but also our family and friends.

We would highly recommend Pear Tree Photography to friends!

My husband and I came to Vancouver for part of our honeymoon. We found David through an Airbnb experience session for an hour photo session and tour through Granville Island. David was very easy to get in contact with and meet up with in Granville Island. He was easy to get along with and definitely made both of us feel comfortable with getting our picture taken. He knew all the great photo spots and made sure we got everything out of the experience that we wanted. He also gave us ideas for what to do on the rest of our trip and had lots of great suggestions! We are definitely glad we decided to do this and that David was our photographer!

We love documenting weddings at historical and beautiful venues like the Holy Rosary Cathedral and the Terminal City Club; however, I think every cinematographer will agree that what makes a wedding truly captivating to document is the emotion that our couple shares with us. This is the real element that creates the perfect picture. Along with the warmest group of family and friends, we accomplished that this weekend and we are very proud to share these moments with you!
