Bitter sweet. Mostly sweet though. Last of the sunflowers and cherry tomatoes. Ways to enjoy… look at the photo over and over. Go to Out of Hand for the sunflowers today. Eat some Riverside Kitchen or Two Sisters great food this coming week to savour cherry tomatoes. Thanks for all the support to everyone this summer. Lots of dried flowers coming your way, but first some down time!

Check. Garlic mulched. Last of drying flowers harvested to dry today too. All but a couple of the tiny tidy up outside jobs done today as well, in anticipation of the minus double digits tonight.

Back in July we took all the seed that had been spilt and accumulated in the bottom of the seed tote and tossed it in the area that would be the chickens fall pasture. With no rain for months it just sat there, not germinating… until the rains hit. Turns out it was mostly spicy greens. Some sunflower. Some peas. The spicy greens are doing so well I decided not to let in the girls in and let it grow for you. I’m not sure if their squawking is disappointment or anger. Either way… to bad girls… this batch is for peoples thanksgiving dinner! About a dozen bags are heading to Out of Hand tomorrow, along with some nice baby onions. Some more dahlia and sunflowers heading to Bulkley Wholesale as well. Enjoy! And have a good night.

Back in the spring we were pretty hesitant to book an October workshop, but we did. Luckily there are enough flowers … but we did have to move it inside. All set up in this more and more multi use space, warm and cozy away from the rain and cold. … oh, and there will be a few more flowers at the farmers market tomorrow. Yes, we lied, but did think last week was the end… who knows … maybe more next eeek too?!?

All this rain kept us inside the barn… good thing…. We finally had time to make enough for a proper restock of dried flowers at Out of Hand. (Including a bunch of those little mini bunches you love). Have a good day.

Well the flowers are stronger than Jack. No frost yet, on the deck but not in the field. … but tomorrow’s selection could be last ones going to the market for this year, based on the forecast for Sunday…. Same for what’s in those little containers! You know what they are! Come get the last of them! See you tomorrow.

This event has always been a confusing one to promote. It is partly sales, partly just hang out. I'm partly scared that too many people will come, partly scared not enough will come. Its all so confusing... but what is not confusing, is that it always casual and works out, music amazing, it is always a great day, and that you are welcome in whatever way you want. Update... FYI, that Shannon West from Stellar Jay Coffee will be on hand to make you some fancy, tasty drinks.

People often think we get frost earlier than town. It is actually the opposite. The cool air rolls down and pools in the valley and we are usually OK for the first 3 or 4 BV frosts. Last night we weren't sure how it would go... but things were fine. Both the outside flowers and the hoop house flowers (about 50% in/out). The variety of stems is definitely less than a few weeks ago, but we still managed to create a few stellar bouquets for you. Come check us out at the BV Bulkley Valley Farmers' Market tomorrow. 8:30 - 12:30. We will also have garlic seed, your favourite cherry tomatoes, and a few other treats. See you then. (oh, and the last photo is on of our drying rooms, which you can check out if you come to the harvest party next weekend.... see previous posts for info, or drop us a message). Have a good night.

Looking for the older type of silage wrap (thick, black one side/white one side), 15' wide (or more). Anyone switch and have older ones kicking around they want to unload? PM if so with how much you want for them and where you are. Thanks.

Going to Out of Hand tomorrow at 3:30 ish... as you keep telling us... the best cherry tomatoes ever. To make up for disappointing some of you at the market on the weekend... we have made packages of 50% more for the same price. We also did up a few 1 kg bags for a smoking deal. Swing by the store tomorrow and pick some up. Will be another delivery on Friday but back to regular size so don't miss out. (and.. the pickling cucs and paste tomatoes are still rocking. Lets us know if you want some and we'll get them to you this week). Thanks. Have a good day.

We love special orders. We get to harvest in the morning while thinking about the person, or event, or gift, or whatever the reason for the order. We cut differently when we have special orders. Perhaps we cut more of the special stems, perhaps longer stems, perhaps with a theme in mind, and certainly the person in mind. The challenge and reward comes in the afternoon, in the barn, where we put things together. When people special order, they are wanting something to send love, or gratitude, or to celebrate, or to remember. It is a bit stressful, but we are honoured people put trust us to put something together that represents these things to others. Today we filled 2 special orders with some extra large bouquets, which we absolutely love. ... and then got to create more! Last week we thought was the biggest harvest but today was even bigger. Down a couple helpers today, but thankfully past flower power partner Jamie stepped up again and helped out. Come check out the beauty and bounty at the farmers market tomorrow from 8:30 to 12:300 at Central Park, Smithers. Have a good night everyone.

Catherine and I putting the finishing touches on the automatic irrigation system for the Muheim School garden today! Stay tuned for a shout out to the sponsors who made this happen. We did the installation a few weeks ago as a Groundbreakers Agriculture Association Youth on Farms training day, at which we also had Danielle Rettie come to talk about treating your body nice when working physically hard on farms. We'll do a full photo bomb later. Great job everyone, and great job Catherine on finalizing the manifold and lock box!

An extra 20lb of amazing pickling cucs not spoken for today! Pick up at the market tomorrow. First come first serve. Message if interested. And ... on another note...People always ask how the dried flowers look so bright in the middle of winter. Its because we dry everything cool and dark. Thanks goodness we have this room... not just for the best poppy harvest ever, but for the fresh flowers today... its a hot one out there... and the dry room is nice in cool to store the flowers waiting to go to the BV Farmers Market tomorrow. It was the biggest harvest yet. Come check everything out tomorrow from 8:30 to 12:30. (and past flower power partner Jamie made a cameo today so you'll definitely want to reconnect with her amazing bouquets!).

Lots going on these days. Photo shoots available (see previous post) and Groundbreakers Agriculture Association Youth on Farms fundraiser! For those who have come to our farm tour / bouquet making workshops in the past, you'll know its an amazing evening... but this year all profits go to the Youth on Farms program so you'll probably want to come again! If you haven't been, here is your chance to check out the flowers, make your own bouquets, and support both local farmers and young people working on farms in the Bulkley Valley.

16/07/2024

So yesterday I posted looking for help on the farm. Today.... posting on behalf of Groundbreakers Agriculture Association Youth on Farms. We have 2 potential opening for 2 youth (15 to 29) at a various farms in the Bulkley Valley. 6 weeks full time work starting next week. Maybe a tree planters finishing up their contract and want finish up the summer with some extra cash? Anyone? Groundbreakers Agriculture Association will be posting an official post asap, but these just came up and we need to fill them immediately so thought I'd jump the gun. Have a good one.

Help wanted: Looking for a mature helper for the next 4 Mondays and Thursdays. Option 1 (preference): 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Option 2: 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Wage depending on experience (starting at least $20/hr). Must have reliable transportation. Duties: preparing flowers and hanging in the drying room, barn clean up, 3 deliveries in Smithers, misc in town errands and misc preparation for packing flowers and veg. While most farm jobs require excellent health, strength and endurance, this one is less so. Will still require standing and some lifting, but it is suitable for a more mature person with some limitations. Let us know asap if interested.

Meet Norah and Catherine. This years High Slope Acres blooming or budding bouquet makers! A good mix of flowers now. Come check them out at the farmers market in Saturday morning, and now at Bulkley Valley Wholesale twice a week.

Anyone passing through or coming from Witset area early in the mornings? I have a young woman who helped on the farm during school for a bit, but now that the school busses aren't running we are having trouble making transportation work. The BC transit bus arrives too late in Smithers to catch a lift with other staff and unfortunately we can't start later in the day. We can organize the day to make it work in the afternoon, but long story short... anyone able to give her a lift Monday, Thursday, or Friday mornings, arriving in Smithers between 7:10 to 8:10 at the latest?

Firsts. The first are so exciting. We had our first choy and lettuce about a month ago, our first cauliflower feed this week. Today I picked the first cherry tomato. First are always reserved for staff lunches... but I just couldn't wait until this time. Sorry! But... nacho Friday is coming this week and one single nacho chip will be topped with the first pepper of the year! I'll let staff have that one! (and while this post was just to share the joy... does it entice anyone to come help plant on Friday knowing a BV pepper will be served? If so, let me know!)

One of the last blooms of the season hanging on. We keep trying carnations, with their glorious cinnamony smell, but rarely get them to maturity. This one was cut from the greenhouse and opened up inside. Fresh flowers going out in style.
