As frosty days begin to become regular occurrences, panic sets in amongst the procrastinators and distracted gardeners. Did I miss my window of opportunity?

A new blog post went live today! Many of the questions that you guys ask me become the topics for my blog, so do not hesitate to ask them. It helps me hone in one what you actually need and would find useful. And it isn't just about cut flowers (though it all is highly specific and relevant to gardening in Southern Ontario which I find is currently lacking on the internet).

www.buyingthymedesigns.ca/blog/is-it-too-late-to-plant-garlic-in-southern-ontario

I probably do not talk about it as often as the marketing guru's say I should, but I have a blog! It is where I am able to capture my experiences in the garden, share my experiments, knowledge and sometimes the deeper thoughts on lessons the garden has taught me.

One thing Iā€™m really good at is oversharing online (& talking too much) šŸ™ƒ

Keeping track of milestones (storms, weather, first and lasts, when I did certain tasks) has been hands down, one of the best tools or tactics Iā€™ve ever applied.

What Iā€™m not so good at, is keeping a written journal of the garden. See where a problem arises?

And even though I wrote a lot down this year, Iā€™ve kept track over the last few years through my camera role and (over)sharing to stories. Does the world care that itā€™s raining, or that we got a light frost, or some snow flurries? Probably not unless itā€™s accompanied by a stunner of a picture. Especially this time of the year when there are lists to be made, appointments to keep and shopping to be done.

But I donā€™t share this stuff for everyone else. (Le gasp!) Itā€™s my way of keeping info that would otherwise get lost in a sea of pictures on my computer, accessible. And Facebook loves to throw memories back at you each year which really helps to establish weather trends specific to your microclimate/garden! Work smarter not harder!

Plus I find it really helps when the weather mobs start generating panic online over weird weather patterns and I can look back and see my own data shows that this happens, and happens regularly. Or maybe it is in fact really weird weather. Either way I can make a data driven response rather then get swept away in an online theory. Radical I know. šŸ˜

The thing is we can get so busy in life, and so detached from the environment around us. The details of how it functions can get all blurry and weird. Like is thunder in the winter normal? Flowers in October? When does the maple sap start flowing and xx flower bloom?

Anyhoo, in case youā€™re ever wondering why I share ā€œmundaneā€ weather snapshots to my stories, this is me, cataloguing data as one does. šŸ’šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Iā€™d highly recommend you give it a try too. Whether you are trying to plan a garden, a future outdoor date like a wedding, cracking the code on how almanacs do their predictive magic, or just feeling like youā€™re connected to the environment around you, itā€™s a great use of social media IMO.

Many of us have found ourselves in this predicament. Construction, eviction, or a move of choice, and suddenly the thought of losing all or some of our plant friends becomes all consuming. Especially when they hold sentimental value. How can we save them?

I was able to peacefully watch the hydro crews dig and trench around our property this month because I had relocated all the plants. But this was not my first time facing this. Some of my plants haven't ever had the chance to put down any substantial roots because of how many moves they've made.

So since I've been through it a few too many times now and have learned a fair bit in the process, I hoped to answer the questions around this topic as it pertains to Southern Ontario, especially with winter looming.

Hot Take šŸ«¢

Society seems to want to erase the peaks and valleys to make life more predictable, comfortable and ā€œstableā€.

We live in a globally accessible world where we can get pretty much anything, all the time. Businesses try to avoid feast and famine by finding some way to operate stably year round.

Emotionally we often try to avoid the extremes too. People who exhibit bigger extremes get labeled as ā€œtoo muchā€ and we try to always present as ā€œfine, Iā€™m fineā€.

In motherhood I see the struggle with women trying to keep their habits and lives as it used to be and feeling immense frustration that it will not work that way no matter how hard they try. Been there, tried that. šŸ’šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Life has seasons. Plants have seasons. People have seasons. Those big drastic moments make us appreciate the more subtle, quiet in between ones. When life becomes too safe, too predictable, we often feel adrift and like something is missing despite having achieved the predictability we were after.

Those peaks & valleys, the seasons, they shape us. They cause the growth. But they can be uncomfortable.

I used to look at Novemberā€™s landscape with such a bahumbug attitude because the beauty of the fall leaves was over. Summer had fully faded but the sparkle of snow had not yet arrived to cover up the brown.

Until I started working with the land. And now November has its own sparkle. In fluffy seed heads, bountiful berries, burgundies of dogwood and greens of conifers, against the tan of grasses, still upright and swaying. The way the fog and the frost dance and hover and suddenly are gone. How extra golden, golden hour appears.

Without these quieter more subtle months, we wouldnā€™t be as in awe of the explosion of colour and texture that the warmer months bring. They are fleeting, but a phase, making way for the next course.

How lucky weā€™ve been this year with the extended mild weather. Despite scraping frost off the cars again this morning, the garden, in itā€™s little microclimate, still is gifting us fresh memories of summer. šŸ„°

Perhaps youā€™ve found this too.

Integrity in businesses, or rather the lack thereof is everywhere. Whether itā€™s been septic, plumbers, electricians or arborists, having someone who actually follows through on what they said or at least communicates when changes might be occurring is a rarity. Honestly, someone wanting to break into any trade just needs a touch of integrity and theyā€™ll do well IMO, itā€™s that rough out here.

Iā€™ve been ghosted by more trades then actual spirits. šŸ‘» (no wonder tales from the dating community are so harrowing when this is how people with more on the line (income/reputation) conduct themselves)

Iā€™ve been on the hunt for bulk woodchips and despite lots of promises by various companies, no one ever showed up. Received lots of unsolicited advice to try chipdrop (which we did but when youā€™re rural the woodchip market is a different beast. Most properties out here have existing relationships with arborists.)

And the quantity that Iā€™m afterā€¦ Iā€™d be looking at thousands of dollars to buy from a landscape supplier. Itā€™s just not in the budget and I donā€™t need it to be a specific blend.

So I was actually surprised when rolled in this morning. Iā€™m so used to being ghosted. Their communication was great from the beginning and they were very efficient and courteous. After googling them, I shouldnā€™t have been so surprised. Hundreds of reviews all saying the same thing I felt; efficiency, communication, timelinessā€¦

So my Durham and GTA friends, when you find yourself in need of an arborist, start with these guys and hopefully youā€™ll prevent some frustration šŸ˜˜

October 22nd garden fresh bouquets?! Yes please!

This autumn has reminded me a lot of the one we got married in. The night before the big day I was laying on a deck taking in the incredible stars after a golden coloured 20+ degree day. And the day of our wedding the temperatures had plummeted, it drizzled all day and the indian summer came to an abrupt end. šŸ™ƒ Everyone loves to tell us itā€™s good luck.

This year it seems summer just doesnā€™t want to let go. The flowers have drastically slowed and their colours have changed, they donā€™t carry the vibrancy of summer but I canā€™t bear to pull them just yet.

There is so much promise brewing already for next spring! As much as Iā€™m savouring every last moment of this season I am already so excited for all the flowers that next year will bring to us all.

Is it even Autumn if you donā€™t have a pocket full of random seeds?

The views around here become exceptional in the fall/winter months. The rolling hills of the + the colours of the forests and fields, the sunsets but especially the sunrises!! *chefs kiss* those are sensational. My guess is that the colours around here will peak next week.

This morning was one of those mornings. No frost despite being so close to freezing but the sunshine was pure gold and the way it illuminated the landscapes, just wow. It gave us multiple rainbows on the school commute which put us all in a great mood!

It was a gorgeous day to pack down a bunch of the beds and tuck them in for winter. The alfalfa straw keeps w**d seeds from finding bare soil, feeds the microbial life and adds organic matter. I let it sit out and rot all year before applying it so it gets really nice and yeasty/mushroomy. Not as pretty as when they are full of flowers but it sets up a a good foundation for spring planting.

Grateful for all the twists and turns that lead us to calling this home. Waking up to its raw beauty is still a pinch me moment every day.

Grateful for this body that lets me carve my mark into this land.

Grateful for living in the time of the internet where I can learn anything and connect to so many others.

Grateful to be supported by the community (& my family šŸ˜‰) in this flower journey.

And on morningā€™s like today, when our first frost has hit: super grateful for microclimates that keep this little zone of colour practically unscathed so I can keep filling my home with the fresh hues of summer (despite scraping thick frost off the car).

I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving! Thank you for swinging by and ensuring all my flowers found homes this weekend. šŸ„° Iā€™m already so excited for next spring!

This morningā€™s harvest felt like sunshine captured.

I suppose if you get all scientific about it, thatā€™s exactly what flowers are but they donā€™t always FEEL like that. This morning they all just radiated in the suns glow. šŸ˜

Not being a morning person it really helps to motivate me to haul out of bed when this is waiting just outside.

ā€œFlowers donā€™t tell, they show.ā€

And they make wonderful messengers between souls too. From celebrating special days to simply ā€œIā€™m thinking of youā€, flowers can convey strength, kindness, fragility, beauty and more.

The roadside flower stand is open this weekend Friday to Sunday or until sold out, 9am to sundown (8pmish).

Some things have gone entirely to plan this year. But a lot has not. Mostly, the ā€œnotā€ category. šŸ«£ The learning curve as Iā€™ve pushed out of my comfort zone has been steep! So many thoughts and notes on what Iā€™ll do differently next year and so many ideas already brewing. (If there are colours or types that you wish were available in 2025 shoot me a DM)

Iā€™m a bit of a type A, controlling kind of personality and the garden regularly humbles me. As much as I plan and plot itā€™s going to do its own thing in its own time and thereā€™s not a whole lot that I can do to tweak that. Especially once the growing season is well underway. But one thing this season has taught me is that I really do enjoy this process. The labour, the hurdles, problem solving and even the helplessness against certain factors and the constant need to pivot.

And yet, despite the time constraints of doing this with littles all around, the critters and learning curves, mistakes, failures and lessons, Iā€™ve still pumped out more flowers this year then probably every year Iā€™ve ever gardened prior, combined.

And Iā€™ve gotten to share them with so many others via the flowerstand and market šŸ˜

Itā€™s and although growing flowers seems like it might be all romantic, frolicking fun, flower farmers have to be pretty bullet proof to stand against all the hurdles and expectations when there are so many variables. Iā€™m slowly steeling myself so that I can grow and scale and be a part of these ranks for many years to come. šŸ’ŖšŸ»

The pinks tend to get snatched up fast around here so me thinks this restock should be a popular one. šŸ˜‰

Despite having tried and true mixes that get snatched up fast, each week I like trying on a new palette for size. Stretch my own creative muscles but also try it out to see what resonates with all of you who take the bouquets home. Sometimes my absolute favourites are rejected by customers. šŸ¤« This all helps guide my choices in seed selections for next year! If there is ever anything you hope to see next season feel free to DM me, or drop a note in the box at the stand.

The roadside stand is restocked and open this long weekend from 9am to sundown (8-9pm ish). It will be out on Monday as well.
