The election is over. It is a fact that over 70 million people have voted for Donald Trump to return to power as president of the United States; a convicted felon, undisputed ra**st, racist and misogynist man who is deeply divisive and unqualified to lead the nation according to many who have known him personally and even worked with him closely during his first administration and over the years in several of his failed and bankrupt businesses.
No heartfelt testimonies or warnings or pleads were enough to deter many of our fellow citizens from voting him in; they are our neighbors, coworkers, some friends and even family members. The reasoning, excuses and justifications for choosing him ranged from personal to religious, uniformed and blatantly ignorant at times.
The opposition offered a stark contrast which was primarily guided by a display of long standing ethical standards, common sense and unity. But the larger problem of an eroded democracy, eroded education system, and a deeply capitalist society ruled and controlled by a fragment of individuals and their conglomerate institutions compounded by greed and global wars has added to the discontent and orchestrated chaos that has gotten us here. In addition, a growing and ultra fundamentalist and nationalist Christian movement has increasingly infiltrated key positions in politics, government and courts around the country through years of methodical ascension and positioning. None of this has been a coincidence or an accident.
The vitriolic rhetoric and threats espoused by the republican candidate for the last four years will now be put to the test and likely and sadly carried out for everyone in the nation to witness and experience collectively.
May the best of our humanity thrive and prevail in the years ahead. The light of a nation that was once believed to be a beacon of hope for the world has been dimmed significantly today.
