Let’s get into it again, friends! This week our own Alisha, alongside @zimakesfilms talks a little bit about photography styles. There is no right or wrong style of wedding photography, at the end of the day you have to pick the style and team that works for your vision and your budget!
However, we do think it’s important to understand different styles before committing to a team. Knowing what you want the finished product to look like is great, but without some foundational knowledge, it can be hard to ask the right questions when meeting with vendors.
Consider your feelings toward posed photos - not everyone feels very comfortable in front of the camera, and that’s totally okay! I’m personally really awkward so I enjoy photojournalist shoots more. You’ll notice that my own family sessions are mostly relaxed with very little traditional posing. That’s just a personal preference!

I’m sure you’ve heard the term colour palette as well as wedding theme - if you’re engaged I’m sure people have asked you about both! We often hear these terms used interchangeably but they’re actually referring to different aspects of the design.
A wedding theme gives a good visual description of the event - it could be a secret garden, an Amalfi-coast inspired rustic style, or a boho beach wedding. However, a colour palette refers to the actual colour composition of the event. Colour palettes can be applied to themes, but themes are not applied to palettes.
As a best practice, work on your theme first. This can help guide the decision on venue choices and other vendor selections. Your venue plays a massive role in your thematic scheme so if you’ve picked your venue already, consider a theme that works with the space.
