It’s All About DANCE
Over Forty years I have been gathering music for the sole propose of enjoyment!!! Many may know that sense of smell can attribute to some very strong flashbacks; certain smells trigger very intense memories! I personally know that music can do the same thing. We’ve all experienced that moment when we say, “I haven’t heard that song in so long... it was when...” Certain songs will do that to you!
I say this with a grin; my passion is making “mix tapes”. Ironically that term will be lost on many “younger” people because cassette tapes haven’t been in use since before they were even born. My generation had cassettes (including those silly “cassette singles”) and records (both large LP and 45’s), I even had an 8-Track player in my first home stereo! Over my early years various versions of digital formats were tossed around before CD’s (Compact Discs) became the standard in the mid-80’s. The modern way to purchase music is online, downloading your favourites by various methods.
These “mix tapes” aren’t really tapes per say, but my passion stills exists, I love making mixes on CD’s. These consist just under 80 mins of song selections that I feel best fit in or for whatever process I am trying to convey or express. There are way more songs to collect and put into a mix than I could ever do in my lifetime; yet still I sincerely enjoy the challenge and opportunity to make these mixes. I look at them as the “Soundtracks of Life”. I spend way too many hours on these, I get lost in the moment every time.
My other passion is DJing. Playing music for my friends and family, especially those songs that make them happy and fill of joy, getting them on the floor to dance! I started long ago, in high school, when I could overcome my shyness, and felt I knew my audience. Those were fun times. The next 20 years I really just collected and made mixes for myself (or immediate friends and family). With a few exceptions, it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I accepted the opportunity to do gigs for people I didn’t know. Out of curiosity, as a hobby, I started doing weddings and receptions.
There are thousands and thousands of DJ’s out there, heck anyone with a good selection on their iPod can “DJ” a party, making a playlist and selecting “random” can achieve some success. Many people, especially the younger generations, see DJ’s as Beat-Mixing Techno Bass Pumping Wizards on electronic turntable boards. Mix in massive light shows and firework explosions and you got a typical rave party or DJ concert. My hats off to these people, it’s not easy, and can be quite enjoyable but it ain’t my cup of tea so to speak.
I’m more into old school DJing, by definition “DJ” means Disc Jockey, like they used to call radio hosts; those individuals that played from the heart, playing songs that meant something, that evoked an emotional response, or just got you dancing. Today’s radio is totally programmed and too repetitive; great for hearing some good music but far from the old day charm. To be totally honest, I was inspired by Dr. Johnny Fever and the rest of the cast on WKRP in Cincinnati show, and one of my ultimate favourite movies is Good Morning Vietnam. I can list several other shows that give example to what I love about being a DJ but those two are a great summery.
So far as beat-mixing techno and even “record scratching” goes, I don’t! I like sticking to the hundreds of thousands of amazing songs already out there. No matter how many songs I can fit into a night there’s always a handful I wished I played after the night is over; there’s never enough time to fit them all in. I like playing songs people will know and have passion about; they not just want to, but must dance to, and then just as its ending, I hit them with another awesome song. I have been told my selections are “petal to the metal, full speed ahead, non-stop best of the best”. I love seeing the dance floored packed! One thing I have found myself doing, to fit as many songs into the night, is using medleys or mega mixes; a mixture of songs mashed together with small snippets melded into one longer song. I am aware these can backfire, many people won’t recognize them or not like that their favourite song was shortened by another song, however, more times than not they do go over very well. I just have to judge the crowd properly.
My huge range of musical song interests allow me to dig up many positive song choices for all the clients. I have seen personally how much fun they were having during these events and I have realized I am doing a good job. One of my repeat clients has said in an advertisement for an event, “...known for his skills in reading a crowd and getting everyone on the dance floor!” That’s really cool, that’s why I do it! Their joy on the dance floor is infectious, it only encourages me to try harder to keep it going! My natural love for this job got me many good reviews, their praise was above and beyond what I expected, and I take great pride in those kind words. Word of mouth is my main source of advertising and I thank everyone who has contributed to my success.
