Carolyn Grass & “Friend” “Carolyn Grass & Friends” has downsized due to Covid and now I only have one friend ... my Husband Ihor! It has never been about the money.

Carolyn Grass & "Friend” is a local Squamish Band offering a varied and ever growing repertoire. We play classic folk and pop tunes from the 60’s to the 90’s, a few current tunes, the occasional country song, some bluegrass, oldies for seniors and even some classic children’s and campfire sing-along tunes which are always a hit at the Farmers Market! We always try to select songs fitting for the o

ccasion and have even been known to dress in costume for the engagement as well! The real “heart” of this group (a varied and eclectic group of musicians over the years) has always been based on our mutual love of making music and having fun doing it! We love to play to an audience that engages with the music and don’t like to just be “background music”. Carolyn Grass, lead vocalist of the group, has been singing and performing most of her life but became noticed locally after her debut in “Tuned Women 2004” at Millennium Place in Whistler. Due to the promotion of this event by the organizers and Shaw Cable, Carolyn and her band have been asked to perform at many events in Squamish ever since. A partial list of these events includes the Brackendale Fall Fair, Cedar Valley School, Christmas Downtown over the years, Copper & Fire at the Britannia Mining Museum, the first “Crave” event, the Squamish Garden Tour, the Gelato Carina, Helping Hands, Hilltop House 2x per month, Loggers Sports, Under One Roof, a number of Private Events, Rotary Events, Squamish Seniors Centre, Shannon Falls Retirement Home, Brackendale Art Gallery, Squamish Street Market, Squamish Wind Festival, Steam Fest, Test of Metal, Waldorf School and the Wild at Art festival over 3 separate years. In fact, Carolyn Grass & Friends was the opening act at Canada Day virtually every year from the first opening of the new O'Siem Pavilion until just before Covid. The band was originally called "Carolyn Grass & Friends" and has ranged from anywhere from 2 - 7 members until just before Covid! Due to the limitations of Covid however, the band downsized and now consists of Carolyn Grass – lead vocalist & rhythm guitar - and her husband Ihor Zalubniak – keyboard & vocals. Therefore we now refer to the band as Carolyn Grass & "Friend" (because sadly, she now only has one friend - her Husband!)

I would like to share with our followers that Ihor and I have just agreed to play once a month at “Squamish Making Connections”. This group has just started to meet once a month on Fridays and this week will be our first!

Making Connections is a weekly program designed for people
living with cognitive challenges and their care partners. Each session includes music, art, movement, friendship and a light lunch—offering a space to connect, share, and build community in a warm and supportive setting.

We play 2x/mo at Hilltop House and now we will add playing 1x/mo at Making Connections! We have found that the residents at Hilltop are a fabulous audience and I suspect that those attending Making Connections will be as well!

If you know of anyone suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s or other cognitive challenges, please contact their caregiver and share this information with them.

The organization can be reached at [email protected] or by calling Bruna Tabak at (236) 339-4407.

PS. We are of course still available for other events so don’t hesitate to reach out. Our contact info is on our page.

If you know anyone in Squamish still living at home who is suffering from dementia/Alzheimer’s please pass on this information to their caregivers.

I would like to put it out there that Carolyn Grass & “Friend” have made a connection with “Squamish Making Connections” here in town. This group has been going for some time in Whistler but has just started in the last month in Squamish.

We will be playing music for/with them 1x/mo much like we do at Hilltop House 2x/mo. I have enclosed a couple of graphics on this group taken from their page.

I have also enclosed a link to a Squamish Chief article introducing them: https://www.squamishchief.com/opinion/squamish-editorial-dementia-respite-11341450 .

Thanks so much for your support of our little band! And don’t forget to check out our relatively new YouTube page!

Here is one of the songs we played for International Music on the Porch Day this year at the foot of our driveway for some of our neighbours and their kids. In this song some of the children participated - and did very well!

Maybe next year they will have their own “music on the porch”…

Ihor and I had a wonderful time with our neighbours during International Music on the Porch Day! We invited folks to come and share in the music at the end of our driveway since our porch really wasn’t ideal for a group of people…

I have enclosed a photo of us on the porch last year below. Next I will enclose a few short videos taken during the event.

Enjoy!
