Carolyn Grass & "Friend” is a local Squamish Band offering a varied and ever growing repertoire. We play classic folk and pop tunes from the 60’s to the 90’s, a few current tunes, the occasional country song, some bluegrass, oldies for seniors and even some classic children’s and campfire sing-along tunes which are always a hit at the Farmers Market! We always try to select songs fitting for the o
ccasion and have even been known to dress in costume for the engagement as well! The real “heart” of this group (a varied and eclectic group of musicians over the years) has always been based on our mutual love of making music and having fun doing it! We love to play to an audience that engages with the music and don’t like to just be “background music”. Carolyn Grass, lead vocalist of the group, has been singing and performing most of her life but became noticed locally after her debut in “Tuned Women 2004” at Millennium Place in Whistler. Due to the promotion of this event by the organizers and Shaw Cable, Carolyn and her band have been asked to perform at many events in Squamish ever since. A partial list of these events includes the Brackendale Fall Fair, Cedar Valley School, Christmas Downtown over the years, Copper & Fire at the Britannia Mining Museum, the first “Crave” event, the Squamish Garden Tour, the Gelato Carina, Helping Hands, Hilltop House 2x per month, Loggers Sports, Under One Roof, a number of Private Events, Rotary Events, Squamish Seniors Centre, Shannon Falls Retirement Home, Brackendale Art Gallery, Squamish Street Market, Squamish Wind Festival, Steam Fest, Test of Metal, Waldorf School and the Wild at Art festival over 3 separate years. In fact, Carolyn Grass & Friends was the opening act at Canada Day virtually every year from the first opening of the new O'Siem Pavilion until just before Covid. The band was originally called "Carolyn Grass & Friends" and has ranged from anywhere from 2 - 7 members until just before Covid! Due to the limitations of Covid however, the band downsized and now consists of Carolyn Grass – lead vocalist & rhythm guitar - and her husband Ihor Zalubniak – keyboard & vocals. Therefore we now refer to the band as Carolyn Grass & "Friend" (because sadly, she now only has one friend - her Husband!)
