While COVID restrictions put the event industry at a standstill for 2 years, it also taught us a lot. We were able to develop a full Emergency Management and Crowd Safety Plan to be equipped to safely execute events should we need to implement these measures again.

If you're looking for a race out of town but not too far, the foothills of the Rockies would be a delightful destination. Having had the privilege of working with the folks at Run Calgary, I know that they care about what they do and serve up a smoothly executed event at the Servus Calgary Marathon at end of May. A variety of distances are available.

As we saw earlier this month in Ontario and as further evidenced today in the cancellation of the Mont Tremblant 70.3 Half-Ironman, dangerous air quality due to wild fires has added itself to the list of risk elements that can affect the endurance event industry. Ironman organizers made the tough decision this morning to cancel the event as the AQI deteriorated overnight into the morning leaving a layer of ash on bikes that had been prepped in the transition area.

As race directors, we will continue to be aware of new risk elements affecting the endurance event industry and educate ourselves on how best to adjust planning in order to mitigate risks.

IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant was cancelled on Sunday due to the wildfires raging in the forests of the Canadian province of Quebec.

We're often amazed at the performances of Kenyan & Ethiopian runners. Let's not forget that we have some amazing elite runners on our home soil. Canadian Cam Levin just crushed the national half marathon record by completing the RunVan First Half in 60:18. And that's on a course with Vancouver hills, sections open to the ocean, and no pace bunny. Watch him in Tokyo in 3 weeks!!

It was an enriching day at the annual Athletics Ontario Race Directors Summit yesterday - looking at the data reflecting the state of the industry and discussing how to best move forward, focussing on managing safety at events for participants, and always thinking of how to make race events better. Course Dynamics is committed to continued professional learning and being equipped to execute on the industry's best practices.

This story demonstrates the importance of having First-aid & CPR training as there isn't always going to be a doctor running right behind us.

Dr. Steve Lome, a cardiologist in Monterey, California, performed CPR on two people in cardiac arrest at a half-marathon. He also finished the race.

What an opportunity it was to have two rich days of learning, discussions, and networking at the Marathon and Endurance Events Safety & Security Forum with NCS4! With the way our world is evolving unfortunately, Risk Assessment and Emergency Management at mass gathering events have become ever more important. And always fantastic meeting up with other industry colleagues.

I'm very happy to be the Course Director again this year for the Constantine Yorkville Run. It's a well-organized event, and the swag is certainly a huge motivator for anyone to sign up. Looking forward to returning to race festivities without restrictions.
