I'm a life-long flower enthusiast, Certified Prairie Horticulturalist, fascinated apiarist... and now proud owner of Sweet Petals Farm! While I am still new to the world of beekeeping, I am passionate about helping our dwindling bee populations recover and flourish. It’s absolutely delicious and is sourced from two hives right on our yard. There’s nothing like digging in the dirt. Whether on the f

arm as a kid or on my small acreage now, there is something about planting and harvesting that is so fulfilling (though weeding not as much). In completing my Prairie Horticulture certificate, I have plenty of experience growing and arranging many types of flowers. Each flower is unique and each bouquet is a reflection of the individual. Rain, rain, rain!!

You might be wondering what flower farmers do on rainy days. Well, there’s lots of indoor work to catch up on. Here we’re fixing up our tomato cages before they go out into the garden for another season. You’ll recognize Arturo, but who is that helping him?

What are those? you might be asking yourself.

Take a closer look … these are queen cages used to hold the queen bee and her attendants. New queens, ordered from the “bee store,” are needed when splitting a hive (a second queen is needed for the new brood box) or replacing an older queen.

My new queens (6 of them) are from California, Chili and Italy. Welcome to 🇨🇦!

We were excited to welcome Christian and Lise to Sweet Petals Farm this weekend. They are RV travellers from Montreal making their way across Canada to Vancouver Island. One week into their 2-month adventure, they were excited to explore downtown Winnipeg and take in activities at The Forks.

Have you ever heard of TEREGO? It’s a network of over 500 host farmers/winegrowers/cheese makers/artisans etc. across Canada who provide RV travellers with authentic experiences.

Travellers can easily book a one-night stay at any of the host farms online. In exchange for the stay, travellers purchase from the farm.

Arturo Texada, our first WWOOFer of 2024, arrived by train a week ago.

On his Canadian adventure, Arturo is visiting 5 farms in Manitoba and Ontario. We are fortunate to have him here until the end of May.

He describes himself as a lifelong learner and is showing this by his willingness to help with everything we are doing…. bee-keeping , painting, w**ding, and seed starting.

Please welcome him to Canada. You can say hi in English, Spanish, low German, high German or Russian and he’ll reply to you!!

Signs of spring are everywhere!!
On my walk this morning I saw so many perennials and trees waking up to spring.

Yarrow, fig (in pots), iris, sedum, rhubarb and lastly, w**ds - not as happy to see these.☹️

Have you listened to the birds lately? My goodness, it’s a symphony of song!!

I used the Merlin Bird ID app to identify the birds by their songs. In my short 10 minute walk this is what I heard:
Western Meadowlark
Red-winged Blackbird
House Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Song Sparrow
Killdeer
Eastern Meadowlark
Robin
Yellow Warbler

Whew! Last week was a busy!!

I still get excited about spring break! 3 back-to-back sleepovers with grand kids last week meant lots of time to play.

Then, follow that with Easter services, more family celebrations and a Jets game and you have the end to a wonderful week!

Now, it’s back to work!

Temperatures should be on the rise this week, so it should really feel like spring!! Time to check on the bees.

Can you see how this leaf has melted into the snow? My front yard is full of these little “leaf craters.”
The strong rays of Monday’s sun must have warmed up the surface of the leaf enough to allow it to sink into the fallen snow.
So pretty, don’t you think?

OUCH!! Yesterday I got my first bee sting of 2024! Man, I hate those!!!

It was such a glorious day that I decided to do my first hive check of the year…. just a little peak to see how the bees faired over the winter. As soon as I cracked the inner cover off, I realized this hive had lost none of its 2023 feistiness. A second later I was stung!

The next hive was much more relaxed and in good shape too. Without a suit for protection, I decided I wouldn’t risk more stings by opening the cover of the 4 hives inside the styrofoam cover (middle of the photo.) But, I saw action in at least 2 of them.

So, it’s looking good! Next step is adding pollen patties to each hive to give the bees some additional nutrition until warmer spring weather arrives.

An old proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”

This clump maple was already here when we bought our home 30 years ago. At that time it reached up to the eavestroughs.

Now, it provides beautiful shade to the house all summer long and is my one of my favorites.

Are you planning to add any new shrubs/trees to your yard this year? Now is a good time to start dreaming about what that might be.

I was so happy to have a little helper keep me company today. Together we seeded a variety of peppers. Using a crayon as a dibbler, we could place the seeds at the correct depth.

Scrolling through my camera roll, this gorgeous Pink Hawaiian Coral Peony caught my attention. Its petal color changes from a rose-coral to an almost cream color as it ages. So pretty!

It happened to me again!! This is the second time this week that I caught a painted turtle laying eggs. The first time was on Tuesday evening when I went to the backyard. There she was on the gravel path laying her eggs in a hole she had created. I quickly did what I needed to and left without disturbing her further. This evening I drove the golf cart to the backyard again, to close things up for the night. And, again there was another turtle laying eggs in a garden bed. This time I had my phone with me so I just sat there quietly and watched. We have at least 7 turtles who sun themselves on the dock in the middle of our pond. Three generations. Maybe four by the end of summer.

Honey is ready!!! 500g of pure, raw honey from our hives for $7.50 each. Purchase directly from our website, sweetpetalsfarm.ca for pickup from the farm. We will also have a very limited supply of bulk honey available in the coming weeks. (3kg for $32.50)

Oh boy! Excited for all the flowers to come this summer... but also nervous for the fact that this is only one bed of many on the farm!!! Can’t wait to share it (hopefully) with visitors this summer!

My grandkids are certainly enjoying their Amaryllis! Every day they have been seeing (and smelling!) another bloom on this plant that is almost as tall as them! Interested in getting an Amaryllis that will bloom for Christmas? Check out our varieties in our previous post and message to order!

Queen Maymouna. Queen Adelaide. Queen Natalie Jane. Queen Holly. These are the royalty of my 4 bee colonies, named after my granddaughters, the cousin of my granddaughter and a character from a show (the 3 year old picked the names). I spent this past week inspecting the colonies, checking for mites and pulling out the last frames of honey, as well as preparing them for winter (hint: that involves 80kg of sugar). Fresh honey coming soon!

It’s soup weather today! 🥣 I’m adding my Summer Savory Soup Wreath to a pot filled with fresh garden tomatoes, onion, zucchini, corn and dill. Should be delicious! $3 / wreath. Available at the South Osborne Farmers Market tomorrow from 4-8 or by special request.
