Denise has been DJing in Vancouver since the late 1990's. Her beginnings were just collecting music on cassette tapes from the radio and finding undiscovered artists before they became popular. Friends would keep asking for copies of music before she had any idea she was destined to be a DJ. Before long Denise started buying records. Her parents had an old record player, but she soon went to a pa
wn shop and picked a Technic belt-drive turntable and a Sony belt-drive turntable. All she needed then was a mixer. She had no idea what a good mixer was, but she got one anyway. Her first gig was a skate competition in Richmond's Minoru Arena, which worked out smoothly despite having no experience hooking up sound at such a large venue. From that first success, the story of DJ Denise had begun ...
A lot of discs have been spun since those days. Since 2010 Denise has hosted and produced radio shows at UBC's 101.9FM CITR (QueerFM Reloaded) and COOP Radio 100.5FM CFRO (Urban Renewal Project). Denise is a pillar of Vancouver's hip-hop community, and has produced many hip-hop events in the city. She has supported artists such as The Rascalz, Concise, Swollen Members, Tre Nyce, and WC among others. Thanks to her Caribbean heritage she has an extensive knowledge of reggae, soca and dancehall, and she DJ's annually at North Vancouver's Caribbean Days festival, and at reggae nights at Calabash and other venues. Denise has also co-hosted Co-Op Radio's show 'Caribbean Sounds'. As always, Denise is constantly in touch with the latest trends in popular music and besides playing the bar and club scene, she is also hired for corporate or private events such as festivals and weddings.
