Travelling to hit the slopes? ⛷ Make sure to keep this in mind:

⇒ Use a Durable Ski Bag: Invest in a padded ski or snowboard bag to protect your gear from damage during transport, especially if flying. Look for waterproof materials to guard against moisture.

⇒ Check Airline Policies: If flying, review your airline’s baggage policy for ski equipment, including size restrictions and extra fees. Some airlines allow skis as part of your checked baggage, while others charge an oversize fee.

⇒ Prepare for Weather Delays: Keep essential items like boots, gloves, and goggles in your carry-on or vehicle in case your checked luggage is delayed or inaccessible.

⇒ Buy Your Lift Pass Now & Save: With the Canadian Lift Pass you can ski more and pay less. https://canadianliftpass.ca/

Setting Goals for the Ski Season: Fun and Growth for All Ages

It’s a new year; it’s time for a fresh start and some fresh tracks on the slopes. Just like making resolutions for the year ahead can steer the course toward success in life, setting goals can make the ski season more rewarding for adults and kids. Whether you're a seasoned skier or a beginner, having clear objectives adds purpose to your time on the slopes.

For Adults: Start by identifying what you want to achieve this season. Are you aiming to conquer a challenging black diamond, improve your carving technique, or simply enjoy more time outdoors? Setting measurable goals like "spend 10 days skiing" or "learn to ski moguls" can help you stay motivated. As a bonus, fitness, and conditioning off the slopes can become part of the plan to enhance performance and prevent injuries.

For Kids: Making skiing fun and engaging is key to their success. Encourage your child to set simple, attainable goals, like learning to ride the chairlift independently. Consider lessons to build skills in a structured environment. Celebrate small wins to boost their confidence.

Goals for the ski season should be flexible and focus on enjoyment. Remember, skiing is about creating memorable experiences, not just ticking boxes. With clear objectives tailored to your skill level and interests, you and your family can make the most of the slopes this winter!

The Canadian ski industry has lost a founder, friend, and passionate community builder. Rest in peace, Elfriede Huter.

It is with heavy hearts that the Huter Family shares the passing of their beloved Matriarch and Co-Founder of Mount St. Louis Moonstone Ski Resort, Elfriede Huter.

Elfriede passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, at Orillia Soldier’s Memorial Hospital on December 25th, 2024, at the age of 86.

Born in Austria, Elfriede immigrated to Canada, bringing with her a spirit of determination and resilience. A self-taught, hardworking woman, she poured her heart and soul into everything she did. She was a true pioneer in the Canadian ski industry, turning her passion for skiing into a legacy that has touched countless lives.

Elfriede is predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Josl, her sister Dorothea and her brother Adolf. She is survived by her cherished sons, Robert (daughter-in-law Sarah) and Andre, and her dear older sister, Rosa and her 2 nieces, Gabi and Rosa-Anna. She leaves behind a legacy through her four grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Lukas, and Charley Grace, whom she adored and spoke of with pride and love.

Elfriede lived an extraordinary life. Her vision and dedication to family and the mountains she loved shaped not only her own family’s path but also the skiing community she helped create. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother who inspired all who knew her.

Elfriede’s Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday January 7th at 1pm-4pm at the Moonstone Chalet, where friends and admirers can come together to ski/snowboard in her honour and share their cherished memories.

In lieu of flowers, and as an expression of sympathy, donations in memory of Elfriede may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to Covenant House Toronto may be made through the COLDWATER FUNERAL HOME, Coldwater (705-686-3344 or 1-888-645-5485).

Friends are invited to send condolences to the family at www.coldwaterfuneralhome.com

As we approach some of the busiest weeks at the ski resorts, let's take a moment to remember basic chairlift etiquette- with and without kids.

1. Keep the Line Moving Smoothly: When it's your turn to board the chairlift, be ready to move quickly and efficiently. Have your poles in one hand, and pay attention to the lift operator's instructions to avoid any delays.

2. Lower the Safety Bar: Once you're seated on the chairlift, make sure to lower the safety bar right away. BUT, don't forget to check with the rest of the chair before bringing the bar down and up—we don't want any heads bonked or legs squished.

3.Respect Others: No Foul Language or Smoking. Remember, the chairlift is a shared space. Keep it family-friendly by avoiding foul language and refraining from smoking—yes this includes va**ng.

Now let's get out out there and lay some turns down on the slopes! ⛷🏂

How to fuel your body in order to tear it up all day long. 🏂

🍳 Start with a balanced breakfast—protein and carbs will get your body started!

🥜 Snacks to keep you going—granola bars and trail mix are the perfect chairlift snack to keep your energy up throughout the day.

🍲 A warm and hearty lunch—a bowl of chilli is the perfect combo or warming you up while giving your body the protein it needs to finish the afternoon off strong.

What's your go to slope-side fuel?

❄️ Snowmaking isn't a walk in the park. Here are 2 common challenges we face:

🌡 Temperature & Wind Changes: Fluctuating temps can disrupt snow quality, making consistent production tricky—it's out of our control! Plus, shifts in wind can force shutdowns and having to reposition or restart the whole process. It's an art, you need to have the right temperature and zero to little wind in order to make snow.

🕛 Time & Dedication: Crafting that perfect winter wonderland demands long hours and constant monitoring!

Next time you're on the slopes, take a moment to say thanks to the snowmaking team—they are always working hard to bring you the ultimate ski experience. 🎿

🚨 Ski Safety 101 🚨

When skiing with a group, it's easy to get separated at times, especially when "that" friend always races off.

So, before you hit the slopes, agree where you will meet should anyone get separated.

👉Rule of thumb, ALWAYS meet back at the same chair lift you just rode up.

Have fun and stay safe on the slopes this season. ⛷❄️

❄️ Snow Making Myth vs. Fact! ❄️

It's a common misconception that man-made or fake snow is made using chemicals that are dangerous to the environment.

The fact is, it's just a simple mixture of water and compressed air that then freezes into snowflakes! 🌨

Now, who's ready to hit the slopes? 🏂⛷
