The garlic is up! One of our many garlic beds is starting to show signs of life, and it’s always such a thrill to see those first green shoots push through. This bed in particular shares space with some tulips, making it a little pocket of promise—beauty and flavour growing side by side. Spring is officially doing its thing!

Easter 🐣 with the family was extra sweet this year! Three homemade cakes on each table, all baked with love.

Two were classic carrot 🥕with dreamy cream cheese frosting, and one was a soft white cake with French vanilla icing — light and lovely.

Each one had its own little moment:
A flower field with hidden bunnies 🐇 a quiet meadow scene, and a minimalist square cake with bunny ears and a tiny flower 🌸 crown.

Baking them was pure joy — Happy Easter!

There’s nothing quite like that fresh-season feeling—seeds are started, garden plans are in the works, and I’m back to doing daily walk-arounds to check in on the perennials we planted last year. It’s always a little thrill to see what’s poking up and if they’ve settled in well after winter.

This year’s focus? Two new shade gardens and (because you can never have too many) another two dozen peonies will be added to the property. Peonies are such a beautiful and elegant flower—graceful in bloom, rich in layers, and totally timeless. They bring such a soft, romantic feel to the garden, and honestly, watching them unfurl never gets old.

Here’s to another season of dirt under the nails and dreams in bloom!

Sweet & Tangy Homemade Mustard

There’s something special about crafting your own pantry staples, especially when you can infuse them with local flavor. This homemade mustard has the perfect balance of heat, sweetness, and tang, thanks to a touch of our own local honey and a splash of sweet white wine. It’s great for charcuterie boards, sandwiches, glazes, or gifting to a fellow mustard lover.

Ingredients:

¾ cup mustard seeds (yellow, brown, or a mix of both)
½ cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup water
¼ cup sweet white wine
3 tablespoons local honey

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a clean jar with a lid. Stir to mix well, then cover and let the mixture sit at room temperature for 3-5 days. This gives the seeds time to soften and soak up the liquid. After a couple of days, check the texture. If the mixture seems too thick or dry, add a splash of cold water to loosen it.

Time to blend:

For a rustic, seedy texture: use an immersion blender right in the jar.
For a smoother finish: transfer to a blender and blend to your desired consistency—less for grainy, more for creamy. Spoon the finished mustard back into the original jar (no extra dishes!) and refrigerate.
Let it rest in the fridge for a few days to let the flavors mellow and marry. This mustard keeps for several months in the refrigerator—if it lasts that long.

Springtime Treats: Chewy Macaroon Bird’s Nests! 🐣🌸

These chewy coconut macaroons are getting a festive spring makeover! Shaped into little bird’s nests and filled with colorful mini eggs, they’re the perfect sweet treat for Easter or any springtime gathering. Pair them with a cup of tea, gift them in a cute box, or just snack on them straight from the tray (no judgment here!). Who else loves a good seasonal bake?

There’s nothing like coming home to the smell of fresh bread, filling the house with warmth and comfort. Baked late in the evening while waiting for the boys to get home from work, it made the quiet hours feel a little cozier. Simple joys. 🍞✨

Lost in a daydream! ✨ Every year around this time, I have to remind myself just how beautiful our gardens truly are. The way the flowers bloom, the greenery fills in, and the whole space comes to life—it’s pure magic. I can’t wait until our property is overflowing with beauty once again, where every corner is filled with flowers, buzzing bees, and the sweet scent of nature in full bloom.

Spring days like this just feel different—fresh air, warm sunshine, and new life everywhere! The garden is waking up, trees are budding, and the world is turning green again. There’s something so hopeful about watching new growth take hold, little beings stirring, and the quiet hum of nature getting louder each day.

And speaking of new life… we’ve got some fluffy little Silkie additions around here! These sweet babies are already stealing hearts with their tiny peeps and soft feathers. Spring is all about new beginnings, and we’re soaking up every moment.

Who else loves this season of renewal?

Pickled vegetables are incredibly easy to make and perfect for satisfying those weekend cravings!

How to Make Them:
Start by chopping your favourite vegetables—I like to use carrots, cucumber, green beans, and red onion. Pack them tightly into a sterilized mason jar. Add 2 tablespoons of pickling spice, 2 cloves of fresh garlic (roughly chopped) and either fresh basil, rosemary or thyme.

Pickling Liquid:
2 cups vinegar (white, red wine or apple cider—or a combination)
2 cups water
2 tablespoons kosher salt
6–8 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste to balance the vinegar’s acidity)
Bring the pickling liquid to a boil, then carefully pour it over the vegetables, ensuring they’re fully submerged while leaving some space at the top of the jar. Let the jar cool at room temperature, then cover and refrigerate. Enjoy within two weeks!
