So beautiful.. there’s nothing better than a camp fire at camp!
This summer we are ready for survival science.. not only do we learn the science behind survival techniques inspired by @beargrylls and @raymears_woodlore and @treehuggingtarzan but we also discover unbreakable friendships and happy memories of childhood that last a lifetime.. 🩷
Join us this summer for Survival Science!

Dissecting tulips, roses and bluebells and comparing the different plant structures is so interesting! The kids loved it today at @institutmontanazugerberg It’s incredible to see the stamens (made of the anthers which contain the pollen) and the carpel which is the female part and consists of the stigma, the bit the pollens lands on and the ovary which the pollen travels to. The ovary turns into fruit and contains the seeds. I think it’s incredible..!
Thank you @blumenhof_engel for your lovely tulips!

Today at science camp we have been learning all about eyes. The structure and the function by participating in a dissection.
Some of the children were really fascinated, they even wanted to miss lunch to carry on.
The children were so respectful and so sensible and it was really lovely to watch. It’s definitely not my favourite thing to do - thank you Kilowatt Katy for giving such an incredible first experience to what could certainly be some of our future doctors, surgeons and medical professionals.

Today we have been making Cartesian divers! We call them Squiddy because they have little 🦑 tentacles. Although some of the kids were calling them Squishy which is a actually more appropriate!
When you squeeze the bottle the pressure on the water in the bottle increases. The pressure of the water pushes on the air pocket inside Squiddy and the water volume inside Squiddy increases. This makes him heavier and he sinks! When you release the squeeze, the water leaves Squiddy, he gets lighter and he floats again!
You try this at home with a drinking straw, blue tac and a paperclip if you don’t have the mini pipette.

For Easter we have been experimenting with eggs.
Did you know chickens lay about 250 eggs per year and its takes 24-48 hours to make an egg..
If you look closely on the yolk of an egg you can see a little white dot and that tells you the egg is infertile. This is called the blastodisc. If the white dot has a white ring around it the egg is actually fertile and contains the genetic material of the male rooster as well. Then it’s called the blastoderm this develops into the chick.
In the experiment we used a hard boiled egg to change the pressure inside the bottle. The candles heat the air inside the bottle, then as they go out the air starts to cool and contract and creates a vacuum that sucks the air in! .. getting the egg out is another story.. 🥚

Join @spark_science and @creativeyou.ch as we make circuit Easter cards and Easter ceramics.
Join Spark Science and Creative you for a morning full of fun and Easter activities. Children will start creating their own expressive light up Easter card discovering the basics of electronics as they learn to create a functioning circuit which lights up when the button is pressed. Children will then be able to decorate their card and take it home. After snacks and drinks children will then get to paint a unique Easter ceramics.
Kids can choose from different easter themed ceramic pieces making the perfect treasured artwork or beautiful gift for theirselves or family.
Ticket price: 85 CHF and inclueds all materials, card, ceramic, paint, glazing, snacks, easter cake, syrup.
Drop off class
Age: 6+
This event will be in English and German.

I love this workshop. We are testing for gases and building the molecules to model those gases. It makes these really abstract concepts of tiny atoms a bit more understandable.
It’s scary for some children because we are using splints and chemicals to make hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide and there are small pops and to them unpredictable reactions. But I love to give these experiences to children. It’s sometimes just a little outside their comfort zone but that makes them focus. Then when they make a glowing splint relight using oxygen they have learnt to trust themselves that little bit more and gained confidence in their abilities to try hard things.
Not only are younger children willing to try these exciting experiments but they don’t fear when I write chemical symbols with numbers on the whiteboard either..! They absorb so much!
I love the workshops so much because I get to teach real science to kids that love it and are engaged and excited! This fills me with energy and motivation and just such joy!
