On the 18th of September, «The Gathering Place» will host an event in cooperation with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Hamburg and Berlin, which will take place at Kunsthaus Hamburg. In the frame of this event, Alona Karavai, a curator of Asortymentna Kimnata Gallery () in Ivano-Frankivsk, and Nikita Kadan, an artist from Kyiv, will present insights into current artistic creation in Ukraine during the war.

Alongside a selection of graphics, installations, and video art by various Ukrainian artists brought to the event, they will create a space for encounters and exchanges about the role of art in times of war and the change of artistic practice and perception.

Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine is directed not only against the people in the country but also aims to eradicate Ukrainian culture and language. The unimaginable became reality again, the "never again" could not resist the Russian aggression.

We are thrilled to invite you to the upcoming event of «The Gathering Place», which will take place at Lichtmess Kino. We will be screening a silent film called «Fata Morgana» (1931), accompanied by a live music performance by Mykola Lebed. In this way, we want to revive and reimagine the classics of Ukrainian cinematography through modern music.

«Fata Morgana» was directed by the Soviet-Ukrainian film director Borys Tiahno in 1931. The film is rooted in the Avant-garde movement, which was characterized by experimental and innovative approaches to storytelling, visuals, and narrative structures. «Fata Morgana» is based on a novel by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi, a prominent Ukrainian writer. The story is set against the backdrop of a peasant workers' strike that takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, exploring themes of social injustice and the resilience of peasants.

The film will be shown alongside the musical accompaniment by Mykola Lebed () – composer, multi-instrumentalist, and artist who works at the intersection of acoustic and electronic music. Mainly known as a saxophone player from the Ukrainian free improvisation and psychedelic music scenes, Mykola is far from being limited to just one instrument. His solo works range from minimalistic piano pieces and solo sax improvs, moving through ambient and leftfield electronics to the intense «all-together» heights, which you can usually reach during his live performances.

Free admission.

«The Gathering Place» is a place for learning, so we want to offer a unique opportunity to the artists who fled the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine and now find themselves in Hamburg. To enhance their skills in portfolio creation, we will host a workshop with a Hamburg-based artist and graphic designer Franziska Opel. During this session, Franziska will generously share tips and tricks to craft a professional portfolio, covering essential aspects of a layout, content, and many more.

Registration for the workshop is open till 16 August. You can register via email: [email protected], or via DM of .zboru

Franziska Opel´s artistic practice regards signs and language as visual elements, woven into multimedia installations in such a way that what is initially described shifts and detaches itself from its original reading. Her works range between image and sculpture while layering cultural symbols and texts to evoke a web of associations and uncertainty. Opel delves into material properties and opens up different levels of meaning. Her focus is often on topics such as attraction and protection, closeness and distance, risk, and comfort.

07/08/2023

We believe that «The Gathering Place» is a platform for addressing crucial issues, and the exhibition SPEAKING BACK hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg has inspired us to shed light on the matters of Russian colonialism in Ukraine. Therefore, a complex collaboration will unfold on the 16th of August as part of «The Gathering Place» project. The event will begin with a guided tour of the SPEAKING BACK exhibition, led by one of its curators, Katja Schroeder (). Following the tour, art historian and researcher Asia Bazdyrieva () will contribute with a lecture that explores the complexities of Ukraine-Germany relations and the resourcification of Ukraine, providing an entry point to discuss the current state of Russian imperialism.

The program will be held in English. Free admission.

This Thursday we gather at Kunsthaus Hamburg to meet with Ksenia Hnylytska (b.1984, Kyiv), one of the key figures in Ukrainian contemporary art. Ksenia lives and works between Kyiv and Munich. She is known as an interdisciplinary artist who experiments in a multitude of fields, including painting, drawing, ceramics, video, and more. During the event, we will look closely into a curated selection of Ksenia’s video works that cover an extensive period of the development of the Ukrainian contemporary art scene and Ksenia’s role in this.

In 2020 Ksenia was shortlisted for PinchukArtСentre Prize. Some of the selected projects are "Stratigraphy", Vozdvizhenka 32, Kyiv (2016), "Degree of dependence", Awangarda, Wroclaw, Poland (2016), "Let the two seas meet", Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie, Warsaw (2015), "Colour test", the Small Gallery at the Art Arsenal, Kyiv (2013), Gyumri Biennial (as part of the R.E.P. group), Gyumri, Armenia (2008).

In addition to her remarkable solo artistic practice, Ksenia has an extensive background in collaborative projects. She played a pivotal role as a co-founder and member of «R.E.P» collective, whose impact on the contemporary art of Ukraine is difficult to underestimate. The collective exists almost for 20 years and was established as a reaction to the “Orange Revolution” in Ukraine. From the beginning, the group has been focused on questions of coexistence and self-organization. They formed grassroots institutions, cooperation platforms, and forums for sharing ideas. With these initiatives, the collective explores important social issues. During the artist talk, we will have an opportunity to have a look at some of the collectives’ video documentation.

See you soon!

The program will be held in English. Free admission

Let us introduce the Óstov Collective, an art collective formed in Leipzig, Germany a few weeks after the russian military aggression against Ukraine began. The collective consists of Elza Gubanova, Leon Seidel, Anna Perepechai, and Emilia Sladek. Their artistic practice focuses on conceptual space-specific installation art. The collective works in an interdisciplinary and participatory-oriented way, often inviting external artistic positions to be part of their projects. Besides, the collective has also curated group exhibitions and organized cultural events, urging to create long-lasting relationships between artists and cultural workers in Germany and Ukraine in this way. The collective's primary goal is to encourage an open society and solidarity, as well as to inspire and contribute to social change. If you are interested in the collective art practices, we will be waiting for you at our next event on the 13th of May in Kunsthaus Hamburg!

Photos in order: Sound installation “ZLAM”/“Sit down tragedy: about horizontal connections in Ukrainian society”. A talk with Oleksandr Naselenko/ installation “Óstov table”/ exhibition “Sensing places / placing senses”.

Get ready for an upcoming exciting event! This Saturday, in the context of «The Gathering Place», we will have the pleasure of meeting with the Óstov Collective. Since the beginning of the russian aggression in Ukraine, this Ukrainian-German art collective has been organizing exhibitions and lectures both to promote rich Ukrainian culture and to establish Ukrainian-German connections in art and daily life. Their activity has been a significant source of inspiration for «The Gathering Place» project as well. On May 13th, Elza Gubanova and Leon Seidel, two members of the Óstov Collective, will talk about their artistic practice, the pros and cons of the collective work, art making in times of war, and many more. As an added bonus, after the artist talk, we will be dancing to the funky tunes of the DJ set by Ukrainian musician . It's going to be an exciting event that you won't want to miss!

Hello everyone! I'm Lesia, part of the team at Kunsthaus Hamburg and the driving force behind «The Gathering Place» project. As a refugee from Ukraine myself, I feel the importance of this project in helping fellow art enthusiasts navigate through these uncertain times. Having had the opportunity to enter Hamburg University of Fine Arts after the full-scale war broke out, I know firsthand how education can empower and provide a sense of stability. «The Gathering Place» aims to be a hub for connection, learning, and cultural enrichment, fostering a sense of Ukrainian community in Hamburg. Let's come together and make this a space where we can share experiences, exchange knowledge, and support each other.

Kunsthaus Hamburg, a home for «The Gathering Place», is a center for contemporary art. Located in the heart of Hamburg, the center occupies a former market hall that has been transformed into an exhibition space. The center's exhibition program is diverse, with a focus on supporting the up-and-coming generation of artists. Not only it provides a platform for emerging artists to exhibit their work, but also serves as a space of communication and dialogue, a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to today's society. By bringing together artists, Kunsthaus creates a dynamic and inclusive space for exchange and reflection. It will kindly host the cultural and educations program of «The Gathering Place» for creative people who fled the war in Ukraine with the support of “ART CONNECTS – Aid fund for projects with cultural workers seeking protection“.

We are thrilled to invite you on the 13th of April to a special film screening of «The New Jerusalem» in Kunsthaus Hamburg. Directed by filmmakers Roman Himey and Yarema Malashchuk, the film represents a creative gaze into the classic genre of a road movie. The documentary takes the viewers on a journey with thousands of Ukrainian Christian pilgrims to the Zarvanytsia, a sacred place, which is a monastery in the eponymous small village in the western part of Ukraine. It is a beautiful and thought-provoking film that provides insight into Ukrainian culture, religion, and history. Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Himey are Kyiv-based artists and filmmakers known for their creative collaborations. They were awarded the main award of the PinchukArtCentre Prize (2020), VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize (2021), as well as the Grand Prix at the Young Ukrainian Artists Award (MUHi 2019).

Through the events, the foyer of Kunsthaus Hamburg will serve as a networking hub for sharing experiences, exchanging knowledge, doing collective artistic practices, and many more. Additionally, workshops, artist talks, and film screenings will accompany the gatherings. The program is conceived by Lesia Hudz.

«Місце збору» – в Kunsthaus Hamburg!
«Місце збору» – це серія культурно-освітніх заходів, метою яких є створення платформи для взаємодії українських культурних діячів, які були вимушені бігти від повномасштабного російського вторгнення в Україні і наразі перебувають в місті Гамбург. На наші зустрічі ми запрошуватимемо також представників німецької культурної спільноти. Під час заходів фойє Kunsthaus Hamburg слугуватиме "хабом" для обміну досвідом та знаннями, колективних художніх практик та багато іншого.
