A short documentary on the NATIONALES PERFORMANCE NETZ (NPN) STEPPING OUT program.

NEUSTART KULTUR
STEPPING OUT

NEUSTART KULTUR, a program of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, supported the preservation of cultural life in Germany under the substantial restrictions and financial burdens due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The program aimed to strengthen and adapt the cultural infrastructure in Germany as a basis for maintaining artistic work. It also supported artistic production itself and the development of new programs and projects. Overall, the program was intended to help cultural life to continue to prosper, to provide people with cultural and artistic offerings, and thus to ensure social communication and intellectual exchange.

The federal program NEUSTART KULTUR, which complements corresponding measures by the federal states, was subdivided into individual programs that have been developed to meet the specific needs of the individual sectors or branches. NPN-STEPPING OUT is part of the program “Hilfsprogramm Tanz”.

NPN-STEPPING OUT was intended to (re-)develop non-theatrical, analog, media and digital public spaces, as well as performative settings and fields of action for dance that are still to be thought of or invented, in order to expand the ways in which dance can be presented, which have been restricted by the Corona pandemic, and thus to continue artistic practice and occupation. Besides, the re-editing of works – originally meant to be performed on stage – for a performance in public and/or digital spaces can also be funded.

The NATIONAL PERFORMANCE NETZ is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Ministries of Culture and the Arts of the following federal states: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

Anyone who dances - like Meg Stuart, who was born in the USA and has lived in Europe for over 30 years - accumulates an enormous reservoir of body memories in the course of an artistic life. Body memory is an essential starting point for “All the Way Around”, an intimate trio between dance improvisation and concert, which Meg Stuart creates with jazz bassist Doug Weiss and pianist Mariana Carvalho.

Together they are inspired by the ballad and break this musical form down into small but meaningful gestures as an expression of longing and defiance. They trace and unfurl spirals of memory, dive deep into what was and ride the waves between the almost-remembered and the unknown.

Rarely has a work provided such a fundamental insight into the movement thinking of the world-famous choreographer, who has created completely new aesthetics in contemporary dance since the 1990s.

“New Old” is a solo on a chair that focuses entirely on rhythm, voice and movement. Alma Söderberg listens to sounds to synthesize them with each other, forms words through gestures, creates thoughts that evolve into sounds, into music, into dance which in turn bring forth new thoughts. “New Old” is personal, private in fact. In it, The Swedish perfromer and choreographer reflects on the ageing post-natal body, especially the pelvic floor, the fear of wetting one’s pants, the mouth-like shape of the v***a and the question of how the word “pussy” sounds in different languages. This thinking moves in and out of internal and external spaces, shoots through the roof with vectors of high hissing sounds and lands in melodic phrases that float above the heads of the audience.

Ayelen Parolin’s piece is all about the wish to make life simpler. A difficult task, as we know! What could a “simple” dance look like that is spontaneous, sincere and completely uninhibited? Doesn’t a piece with such a utopian approach inevitably have to look ridiculous?

Ayelen Parolin, who shies away from neither the ridiculous nor the absurd, faces this challenge and the inherent contradictions. In a society in which everyone acts like an expert and hides behind pretentious and calculated behavior, she returns to forms of naivety, embracing the comical and the idiotic. With three dedicated performers who can do (or at least try to do) practically anything, she creates a show full of Dadaist inspiration that is deeply human.

Based on a text by Fabienne Aucant, brochure of the International Biennale Charleroi danse.

“Spelling Spectacle” is a game that follows a meticulously thought-out plan. With each move, the three performers cast a glance into the immediate future and try not to succumb to either their individual whims or the strict principle of collectivism. If they stick to the rules of the game, they risk running into the wall, going hopelessly round in circles and missing their targets. If, on the other hand, they remain true to their individual ideas, they risk sabotaging the collective effort.

This productive dilemma becomes the driving force behind the performance, which is created in real time. One step follows the next and whenever one room is left, another mysterious door opens somewhere else.

The Norwegian Ingrid Berger Myhre lives in Brussels and is one of those artists who constantly and cleverly explore the possibilities of dance and theater - and do so with witty charm.

„Under the Flesh“ tells - without pathos or cynicism - the story of a body scarred by never-ending wars. How does this body react to the threat of death? What tools has it developed to survive? For the Lebanese artist Bassam Abou Diab, dance became a survival strategy – a dance with clear rules and its own techniques as a response to the cruel machinery of war, as a way of dealing with feelings of fear, panic and despair and as a way of resurrecting again and again. Together with musician Ali Hout, Bassam Abou Diab creates a masterful dance piece that celebrates art as a space of freedom.

Bassam Abou Diab came to contemporary dance via spoken theater and traditional Lebanese dabke. He was a member of Omar Rajeh’s company Maqamat for several years, which co-produced his performance „Under the Flesh“ in 2016. In 2021, he founded the Beirut Physical Lab, which is dedicated to promoting emerging dance talents through training, performances and international partnerships.

It is with great regret that we have to cancel the event „How can we live together? Approaches towards a better mutual understanding“ cancelled. Due to the uncertain political and military situation in the Middle East and the current threat of flight cancellations by international airlines, our Israeli guests cannot reasonably be expected to travel to Munich. We hope that we will be able to reschedule the event at a later date.

One circle, one dancer, one community. So many stories, lines, experiences and no end. “Shard” paints a choreographic picture of how individuals and society deal with trauma. In her latest production, Munich-based choreographer Ceren Oran shares the feeling of loneliness resulting from traumatic experiences and sheds light on the post-traumatic inner states of anger, grief, despair, guilt, helplessness, hyperactivity, fear and isolation. At the same time, she raises questions: Is truthful empathy actually possible? What does support mean in such states of emergency? What do we shy away from? What language do we find in dealing with each other? Can we hold on and endure this?

TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA DISCURSIVE DIALOGUE

What is (it) worth ...?
Discursive dialogue series as part of the TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA
30 July - 3 August 2024
Free admission

This year, the question „What is (it) worth ...?“ is at the center of TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA’s discursive discussion series. Most artistic careers are precarious, working and living conditions are characterized by short-term planning and economic uncertainty. Can public attention, positive reviews and audience success make up for this? What motivates artists to create? And what is the value of art for society? Before the performances, international guests from the dance and performance scene will discuss with local dance makers.
The talks will be held in English.

TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA WORKSHOPS

“The Instrumentalist”
August 5 - 9
Studio D

Advanced/Professionals
In English

As a former dancer with William Forsythe‘s company for over a decade, Esther Balfe explored extensively strategies for producing different outcomes within ones own artistic movement canon. In this vibrant compositional and score building class, participants will explore an array of strategies for connecting and relating to one another.

The aim is to bring the learnt components together by devising and allowing use of other principles of ordering and considering other outcomes, and subsequently what emerges is the facilitated development of movement without being prescriptive. Together, we will find other solutions to our habitual movement plethora by assigning both implicit and explicit tool building skills.

Recognising todays need for performers and dancers to find ones own artistic autonomy, therefore much attention is placed on taking time with each artist in the view of searching for a legitimate language. Additionally, exploring and getting to grips with fixed repertoire structures or phrases, participants will play and create systems for improvisation.

This workshop is for dancers of all levels with a good grasp of contemporary dance and can involve interaction, i.e partner work.

What does the future have in store for the human body? „Panorama“ is a dance solo that explores this question with fantasy, humor and careful optimism. Raquel Gualtero invites us to enter into a contemplative state with her. Her body becomes a medium to traverse different imaginary worlds that seem inhospitable but strangely familiar. The whole piece is full of recognizable gestures that, through their repetition, become an infinite choreography.

As a dancer, Raquel Gualtero has worked with renowned companies such as the Scottish Dance Theater, Compagnia Zappala (Italy), the Fabulous Beast Dance Theater (United Kingdom), Romeo Castellucci and established artists from the Catalan scene such as Àngels Margarit, Àlex Rigola, Sònia Gómez, Pere Faura, and Lipi Hernández. She made her choreographic debut in 2005 with „Blanco“. „Panorama“, which will be performed for the first time in the German-speaking countries at the TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA, she completes a trilogy of full-length works begun in 2019.
