Thanks dear colleagues at Dance Development Network for your support and solidarity.
Quote from the statement in German and English:
Die aktuellen Mittelkürzungen des nordrhein-westfälischen Kulturministeriums bedrohen die Zukunft der Tanzmesse, einer wichtigen Plattform, die Künstler:innen, Kurator:innen und Publikum weltweit verbindet. Ihr Verlust hätte schwerwiegende Auswirkungen auf professionelle Partnerschaften und würde die globale Tanzgemeinschaft erschüttern.

The recent funding cuts from the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture threaten the future of Tanzmesse, a key platform connecting artists, curators, and audiences worldwide. Its loss would severely impact professional partnerships and disrupt the global dance community.

and are the first winners of the Salavisa European Dance Award, a prize created by the Calouste Gulbenkian in collaboration with another six European artistic institutions - CONGRATULATIONS 🎉

Idio Chichava was one of the artists of the with his winning choreography Vagabundus.

In his acceptance speech he said:
"I would like to recognize the beauty and the importance of this project, that brings us together here tonight. This project, that I believe, is more than a celebration of artists like Dorothea and me. This is a platform that reaffirms the value of choreographic art, and it is an essential strength and essential force for humanity. Because dance can heal. Dance makes us human, because everyone has a body, and when we have a body, we feel things and we get emotional. And when we have a body, we want peace!
At the same time, I would like to say that this award comes at a moment in which we Mozambican artists face serious challenges, with our right to freedom and our right to expression at stake! I accept this award as an engagement to commit to travel, to change adversities that we face in Mozambique and the world, and to turn this adversity into possibilities for change. And to share the world's beauty! (...) We call on everyone to shout for human rights in Mozambique, and we would like to have a world that could give us harmony and the possibility to live a good life!"

internationale tanzmesse nrw wants to bring attention to the situation of the artists and organizers of the dance community in Mozambique, who are currently affected by the violent political unrest following the assassination of Elvino Dias, legal advisor to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and opposition politician Paulo Guambe last Saturday, as well as by recent police violence against protesters in Maputo.
The annually held dance week, co-organized by former African Dance Biennale host Kinani Moz, Cia Converge and Yodine Produções Técnicas, which would have taken place from 21-27 of October in Maputo had to be cancelled for safety reasons. The organizers wanted to celebrate this year`s dance week with an extraordinary diverse programme of workshop held by Mozambique artists Francisca Mirrine, Pak Ndjamena, Vasco Sitoe, Phayra Baloi, Dinis Quilavei, Idio Chichava as well as Manuel Manhiça, Nando Titos Sitoe and Vasco Magaia of Hodi Swing Júnior among international colleagues.

Tembe / director Kinani Moz and associate curator of internationale tanzmesse nrw 2022 & 2024:
“We are currently experiencing a tense post-election period, marked by irregularities and oppression. Given this situation, we have made the conscious decision not to hold the Dance Week under the present conditions. For the artists, this is particularly challenging, as many, if not most, rely on these platforms — which occur only once a year — as a vital source of livelihood and opportunities for artistic expression.”

Tanzmesse aligns with the EU statement from October 19, strongly condemning the killings and calling on the current government to respect the democratic political rights and the will of the people of Mozambique.

Köhler, co-artistic director internationale tanzmesse nrw 2022 & 2024:
"At this year’s Tanzmesse, we had the privilege of experiencing the powerful performance Vagabundus by Idio Chichava/Cia Converge. We also had the pleasure of dancing and celebrating with the company while learning more about the remarkable dance community in Mozambique. We are deeply concerned for the safety of Mozambique’s civilians, their lives, and their democratic political rights. We hope that the dance community will continue to thrive in safe conditions and be able to fully express themselves with the freedom of artistic expression."

internationale tanzmesse nrw

It is with great regret that we have to announce that internationale tanzmesse nrw – fair & festival will not take place as planned from 26-30 August 2020. Due to the measurements taken by the German federal and state governments to contain the COVID-19 pandemic (updated 4 May 2020), no large events and festivals are allowed to take place in Germany before 31 August 2020.

The internationale tanzmesse nrw hosts the largest professional gathering dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance. The internationale tanzmesse nrw takes place every two years, generally at the end of August, in Düsseldorf, Germany.

In 2020, Tanzmesse takes place in Düsseldorf from 26 to 30 August. For the first time there will also be performances on Sunday. The Exhibition Halls will be open to professional visitors and the interested public from 27 to 29 August.

The Festival Programme of the Tanzmesse is an opportunity for Tanzmesse Exhibitors to present their work live, in the shape of fully produced performances or in the form of Open Studios, on the best stages for dance in Düsseldorf and Krefeld. The artistic programme is a selection of performances chosen from proposals submitted by artists.
