INFLUENTIAL TOURISM INDUSTRY EXPERTS TO SPEAK AT AFRICA TOURISM LEADERSHIP FORUM

The upcoming Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) and Awards is a dedicated Pan-African private-public sector comprehensive tourism forum. Taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), Ghana on 30 and 31 August, 2018, the Forum’s insightful programme focuses on innovative approaches to leveraging business and policy-critical opportunities available to Africa’s travel and tourism stakeholders.

The organisers and the host institution, Ghana Tourism Authority, are pleased to announce the confirmation of other speakers at the forum, who are a mix of academic and industry experts to share practical insights, experiences and knowledge. They include Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, South Africa, Aaron Munetsi, General Manager of South Africa Airways, Africa and Middle East, Professor Dimitrios Buhalis of Bournemouth University, Jacinta Nzioka, Marketing Director of Kenya Tourism Board, Rosette Rugamba, Managing Director of Songa Africa and Dr. Kobby Mensah of the University of Ghana Business School.

The sessions will focus on global industry best practices, progressive policy-making, industry trends and innovation. These will be preceded by Masterclass on Sustainable Tourism Product Development - Leisure and Business Tourism/Events on 30 August, led by Professor Novelli of University of Brighton. Attendees including policy-makers, business leaders and entrepreneurs will gain from these through learning, networking and creating new business linkages. Dr. Kobby Mensah, an expert in Tourism Marketing at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) notes that “the ATLF underpins Africa’s role in world tourism, and most significantly signals the continent’s new development paradigm spearheaded by tourism.”

Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, Head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality at Bournemouth University, also observes that Africa has a fantastic potential for growth and development given the uniqueness of its unexplored tourism assets. According to Professor Buhalis “this opportunity should be explored to attract investments to improve infrastructure, transportation networks and connectivity towards better quality of life for local communities.” The two-day programme has themes reflecting progressive policy-making, enhanced intra-Africa travel, diversification of economies through tourism, innovation, quality standards and tourism infrastructure development and Private-Public Partnerships. “I believe the Forum is an excellent platform for policy makers, industry leaders and knowledge creators to kick start the process in a bottom up approach by bringing together synergies between different players, celebrating unity and building bridges. I am excited to be contributing,” adds Buhalis.

MITM Americas 2018
18 – 21 September 2018, Havana, Cuba
GSAR Marketing / MITM Events announced the 22nd edition of MITM Americas, the most influential tradeshow in America and the Caribbean of B2B MICE tourism, to be held from 18 to 21 September in the magical city of Havana, Cuba.
MITM Americas Havana is sponsored by the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR), Melia Cohiba, Ecotur & Skedio Group.
Cuba, for the third time, places its trust in MITM Americas to promote the country internationally as one of the foremost destinations for the meetings tourism sector.
GSAR Marketing successfully organized MITM Americas since 1997 making it the oldest international MICE trade show in America and the Caribbean. Designed for professionals of the business events sector with scheduled B2B appointments and a high-quality networking program the event establishes close contact between all participants.
48 tradeshows - 34 cities - 18 countries
MITM Events has demonstrated throughout the years that all its editions maintain MITM´s high hosted buyer quality thanks to the company’s strict vetting procedures. Only high-profile buyers with profound business potential are eligible to participate.
The two tradeshows previously held in Cuba - Varadero (2004) and Havana (2009) - created a notable contribution to Cuba’s development in the MICE segment. Progress and development of Cuban tourism is being recognized internationally, making this a country of opportunity for the world’s MICE organizers.
Cuba - the Greater Antilles archipelago’s largest island is highly attractive in many aspects – its history, culture, gastronomy, hotel infrastructure and – not least – as an outstanding, unique destination in tourism.
This year Cuba was awarded with the "Premio Excelencias Turísticas" as one of the safest tourism destinations which emphasizes the country’s constant effort towards evolving as an international destination.
The website will be updated during this week, hosted buyer applications are expected to open around mid-March.

Meetings Africa: New Bidding Fund for South Africa National Convention Bureau

South Africa’s Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom announced at Meetings Africa in Johannesburg a new bidding fund of 110 million Rand (8 million Euros / 8.45 million USD) for the next 3 years to support the National Convention Bureau’s competitiveness as well as the regional convention bureaus in the bidding process for international conventions, conferences, meetings and incentives.

For the upcoming financial year starting April 1, 2017, 20 million Rand (1.45 million Euros / 1.53 million USD) are assigned, 90 million Rand (6.55 million Euros / 6.9 million USD) are assigned to the subsequent three years. A focus is on the countries identified economic priority sectors which include mining and metals, manufacturing, the creative industry, life sciences, information and communication technology and business process outsourcing.

Minister Hanekom stated: “This ground-breaking fund will enable us to bid aggressively for international association conferences, meetings, incentives and exhibitions. This is fantastic news! The fund will be a catalyst that propels our business events industry to a higher league.”

The tourism’s business events sector is a key contributor to the South Africa economy, but the minister did not only point out the importance for South Africa, but for the entire African continent. He stressed that bringing a business event or a rotating conference to South Africa may also increase the chances of winning a subsequent event to other African countries and thus opens a path to the important development in other African countries.

This month, it is a pleasure to post our impressions from the show floor of Meetings Africa. Our pre-event visit to Cape Town clearly showed us a modern and highly developed city with facilities capable and suitable to host most wonderful events.

The modern Sandton Convention Centre proved to be an ideal venue for the event. The easy access from Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo International Airport to Sandton with Gautrain – the cities’ clean and modern rail in just 12 minutes (4 Stations) leaves you with only 8 walking minutes to Sandton Convention Centre. Upon completion of the current roadwork you will find many highly suitable hotels in easy walking distance to the Convention Centre.

Meetings Africa has proven to be a highlight for anyone planning events in the Southern African region and is sure to grow its influence on the African continent. We highly recommend attending the 2018 edition of the show!

In our upcoming edition of MICE:destination we will report about our experiences before and after Meetings Africa in detail – including our post-event visit to Entabeni Safari Conservancy.
In this NEWSFLASH we update you on the Cape Town International Convention Centre extension project and on the extended support of South African National Convention Bureau and the regional Convention Bureaus.

See the updates on record setting conference trends in Prague, Czech Republic and in Berlin, Germany and we’re also updating you on the extension on the visa fee waiver scheme for visitors from 21 countries in Thailand.

And of course, we’re also looking forward to IMEX in Frankfurt. IMEX has successfully tested Zenvoy networking services which will be rolled out for the show in May – don’t forget to apply to the hosted buyer programme if you are an eligible European buyer!

As usual, we warmly invite you to share this edition with your colleagues!

Best regards,
Martina
