This festive season, take a moment to admire the hidden heritage above the high street🎄✨

Did you know DV8 on Castle Place is actually housed in the historic Riddel’s Arcade building? If you glance between the fourth and fifth floors, you’ll spot two sculptural details: a hand and an anvil – a nod to Riddel’s industrial heritage 🔨👋

🌟 Remembering Colin Maxwell: A Master of Draftsmanship 🌟

Colin Maxwell was an architect of immense talent and vision, known for his exceptional work with Consarc. One of his most celebrated projects was the conversion of The Merchant Hotel, but what truly set him apart was his remarkable skill with a pencil. In an era dominated by CAD, Colin’s draftsmanship was a rare and inspiring gift.

He regularly exhibited at the Royal Ulster Academy’s annual show, and in his retirement, he found joy in capturing the beauty of Venice, drawing his favourite buildings during annual visits. Colin also had a deep appreciation for Riddel's Warehouse. A few years ago, he created a stunning series of interior drawings, showcasing his ability to bring spaces to life.

Though he passed away two years ago at the age of 67, Colin’s legacy lives on. We’re deeply grateful to his widow, Linda, who has generously donated six of his beautiful drawings of Riddel’s Warehouse to Hearth Historic Buildings Trust. These artworks have become a cherished part of our archive, and we look forward to exhibiting them in the Warehouse itself in the near future.

🖼 An exhibition of Colin’s extraordinary drawings will be held at The Royal Society of Ulster Architects next October. Join us in celebrating his artistry and passion.
