📍The Virtue of Fasting on Ashura📍 (10th Muharram)

On this day, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting, showing respect and thanks.

As mentioned previously Muharram marked the start of the new Islamic year. It is one of the holiest months of the year, second to only Ramadan. It is the month in which ALLAH (SWT) parted the sea and when the Muslims migrated from Makkah to Madina. Muharram holds extraordinary significance in Islam. Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“The best 📍fasting after Ramadan is the Sacred Month of Allah📍 (al-Muharram) and the best prayer after the obligatory ones are the night prayer (Tahajjud).” (Muslim)

In another narration when the Prophet (PBUH) was asked about the merit of fasting on the day of Ashura, he responded:

📍''It expiates the sins of the preceding year''📍

Before you carry on and read the next lines just go back and re read the line above ☝🏽 and absorb it!

Muharram is one of the four sacred months and during these sacred months, both sins and good deeds carry a heavier weight than in other periods of the year. The increased reward from ALLAH (SWT) is one of the reasons why numerous Muslims around the globe choose to give their Zakat in al-Muharram, which is also the perfect time to give Sadaqah!

Special Events That Happened
ON THE DAY OF ASHURA

Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) stated: “On the Day of Ashura ALLAH (SWT) created the 📍seven heavens,
📍seas,
📍mountains,
📍the Pen,
📍Lawh-e-Mahfuz (the preserved tablet),
📍the stars,
📍the Throne of Allah (SWT),
📍Angel Gibreel and all other angels.
📍The first rain fell from the sky on the Day of Ashura.

Also, during the life of Prophet (PBUH) the Kaaba's Covering used to be renewed on the Ashura day of every year. It was narrated from Aisha(RA): "Ashura is the day which Kaaba is covered." (Muslim, Abu Dawud)

The Day of Ashura - the 10th Muharram - is a day of significant importance as Allah (SBT) bestowed salvation on ten of his prophets on that day. Here are these pivotal events which were due to change the course of humanity:

📍ALLAH gave Prophet Moses (AS) the miracle of splitting the Red Sea so he could save him & his people.
📍When Firaun and his soldiers tried to cross it they drowned.
📍Prophet Noah’s (AS) Arc settled on Mount Judi when the rain stopped.
📍Prophet Younus (AS) was released out of the belly of the fish.
Allah (SBT) accepted Prophet Adam’s (AS) Repentance.
📍Prophet Yusuf (AS) came out of the well that he was thrown into.
📍Prophet Isa (AS) was born on Ashura and also ascended to the heaven on Ashura as well.
📍Prophet Dawood’s (AS) repentance was accepted.
📍Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was thrown into the Fire which became cool.
📍Prophet Yaqoob’s (AS) eyesight, which he had lost, was restored.
📍Badr al-Din al-'Ayni (RA) stated that: ”Some people mention […] Prophet Idris (AS), was ascended to the heaven on that day.
📍Prophet Ayyub (A.S) recovered from his illness and
📍Suleiman was bestowed wealth.” (Sahih Muslim)

📍“WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 2nd DAY OF MUHARRAM”?📍

Today is the 2nd of Muharram, the day on which Imam Hussayn arrived in Karbala.

On the 8th of Dhul Hijja Imam Hussayn decided not to do Hajj and instead would start his journey to Karbala to save Islam.

It is on the 2nd of Muharram where he was confronted by one of Yazeeds army general named Sayyiduna Hur by whom he was asked to accept the Caliphate of Yazeed to which Imam Hussayn refused and said Yazeed is a corrupt man and will destroy the culture and peace of Islam.

Imam Hussayn arrived at a place and asked the locals what this place was called to which they replied "NAINAWA" which some old men said is "Karbala". After hearing this Imam Hussayn ordered his men to stop and start camping here, and then he told, “This is the place about which was mentioned to me by my grandfather and my father. We will stay here and our blood will be spilled here and our women and children will be made captive here.” Then he described different places and spoke about them.

He said, “My son Ali Akbar will be killed here, my nephew Qasim will be killed over there and my brother Abbas will be killed here close by the river and at the end, I will be slaughtered here”. The Womenfolk and child’s of Imam Hussayn were also listening to all this and then ended by saying “... and my son Ali Asghar will be killed by a spear over here....” his daughter Skina finally asked “O my father, will the tyrants enter our camps” then he replied “not until I am alive, I will carry Ali Asghar myself into the battle field". My brothers and sisters, today Islam is alive because of this sacrifice of Imam Hussayn. We learn many things from this tragedy of Karbala.

One which comes to mind is that Imam Hussayn told his people to turn back around and go back because Yazeed only wanted him dead, but his people stood by his side.

This is what real loyalty is about May Allah elevate the ranks of the martyrs of Karbala. Ameen.

Jannatul Baqi
(📍Garden of Heaven📍) is the main cemetery of Madinah. Buried here are many members of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) close family, around ten thousand of his companions (Sahabah) and many prominent, pious personalities.

Also my father is buried here, he passed away in 1988 and is buried next to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), the third Caliph and son-in-law of the Prophet (ﷺ). He died in 656 AH.

Some of the blessed personalities resting in Jannatul Baqi are:

📍 The aunts of the Prophet (ﷺ), Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib and her sister Aatikah (may Allah be pleased with them)

📍Relatives of the Prophet (ﷺ), Abdullah bin Jafar and Aqeel bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them)

📍The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ), also known as the Mothers of the Believers. They are Aisha bint Abu Bakr, Sauda bint Zamaa, Hafsa bint Umar, Zainab bint Khuzaymah, Juwairiya bint Harith, Umm Habibah bint Abu Sufyan, Safiyyah bint Hayy al Akhtab, Zainab bint Jahash, Umme Salamah bint Abu Umama (may Allah be pleased with them). The two wives that are not buried here are Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) who is buried in Makkah and Maymuna bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) who is buried in Sarif.

📍The daughters of the Prophet (ﷺ), Fatima, Ruqayyah, Zainab and Umme Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with them)

📍Other close family members of the Prophet (ﷺ) buried in Jannatul Baqi include his uncle Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Taleb, Zainul Abideen bin Husain bin Ali, Muhammad al-Baqir bin Zainul Abideen and Jafar bin Muhammad al-Baqir (may Allah be pleased with them). They are buried close together along with Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her).

📍Imam Malik and his teacher Imam Nafi’ bin Abi Nu’aym (may Allah be pleased with them)

And lastly and more importantly

📍📍📍The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “On the day of Qiyamah my grave shall be opened first and I shall step forth. Then shall Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) step forth and then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then shall I proceed to 📍Baqi and take all its inmates with me📍. Then shall we await the inmates of the graveyard of Makkah, who shall meet me halfway between Makkah and Madinah.” [Tirmidhi]📍📍📍
