The Party Kit concept is part of the circular economy.

In a circular economy items are designed to be frequently reused. This is good because…

💚 we can cut down on waste
💚 we reduce demand for new resources
💚 we can support the local economy.

Party kits operate on a peer-to-peer sharing model. The resources in the kits (i.e. the reusable plates) are shared within the local community.

Rather than everyone buying their own reusable plates to then sit in a cupboard taking up space until the next party, kits are designed to be frequently used by many many people.

This means one set of plates is used for hundreds of occasions during its lifetime.

We’ve also been working to close the loop. This means that we aim to ensure that tableware can be repurposed or responsibly recycled at end-of-life. It’s not perfect, but significantly better than throwing away tableware after every party.

What does everybody do with old Christmas cards? I've been making gift tags out of them for 25 years, but have always received more cards than I've needed tags, and in recent years haven't used any at all, so have bags full of them! Coupled with this is the fact that, although I'm still using tinsel and plastic baubles that I've had for years, I'm always on the lookout for more environmentally-friendly Christmas decorations.

Yesterday I saw a post about using cards to make paper chains, and today we started a new tradition. We're going to add to this one every year, and see how long we can make it.

We’ve finished counting up and have reached a whopping 115k items 🤩

Together our network has helped avoid 115,040 single-use items between July 2020 and July 2021 despite a pandemic!

That's 115k of disposable plates, cups, bowls and cutlery avoided because people hired a party kit and switched to reusables. 💚

This last year was far from normal, and many party kits have already broken their record for last year in the first few weeks of this year so we can’t wait to see what we will achieve together by next year.

Next Monday is the start of Zero Waste Week! 🌍

Founded in 2008, Zero Waste Week aims to promote ways we can reduce waste, foster community support and bring awareness to the increasing problem of environmental waste and pollution. It has sparked the campaigns all over the world!

An ambition to reduce waste is at the very heart of the party kit concept. Each time a party kit is hired an average of 100 single-use items are avoided. This helps to significantly reduces the waste footprint of parties.

For more ways to tackle unnecessary waste check out zerowasteweek.co.uk

Ministers in England have announced a proposed ban on single-use plastic plates and cutlery in an effort to reduce plastic pollution. (source: The Guardian)

The EU has already brought in a similar ban this July, and in Australia both WA and Victoria have announced plans for banning single-use plastic tableware.

This is a welcomed step, but really only the very first step towards a more sustainable future.

The proposed ban in England would be a ban on just plastic disposables, not all disposables. And while disposables may be necessary in some cases, the overall shift needs to be one of reuse rather than single-use.

But this is still a step to be celebrated, and one which very much validates the value party kits offer in supporting a sustainable future.

Plastic? 🤔

Many of the party kits in our network use plastic tableware.

It’s light, durable, affordable and colourful. It is designed to be used again and again (and again!) ♻️

Yes, it could be better. Most plastic tableware is still made from fossil fuel plastics and could one day become plastic pollution.

In the UK, the we offer our members access to fully traceable, UK-based end-of-life recycling through Brothers Make.

And we are always on the hunt for better solutions. There are more options coming on the market, such as recycled plastic tableware by Re-Play which can then be recycled again. And new plant-based plastics (although these are currently difficult to recycle).

But every time a party kit is used it helps to save thousands of non-recyclable items from landfill.

We believe that any reusable item is better than the alternative single-use, and we‘re doing our best to consider what happens to our items at end-of-life.

We are tentatively starting to get excited in the UK. Spring is on the way and today many children have returned to school. ☺️

While there’s still a long way to go before we’re back to partying unrestricted, there is now a little light at the end of the tunnel. 🤩

As we get ready to dust off our party kits we hope that more people than ever will join us in the switch to reusables. ♻️💚
