In honour of Black History Month

"Laroche"
Echoes of Valor: The Story of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche

Written and directed by Dr Carlette L Norwood

"Laroche" is a poignant and thought-provoking play that sheds light on the life and journey of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche, the only Black 2nd Class passenger aboard the RMS Titanic. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century racial tensions and social dynamics, the play explores Laroche's remarkable journey, aspirations, and the tragic circumstances that led him to board the ill-fated Titanic.

The decision to board the Titanic becomes a pivotal and ill-fated moment in Laroche's life. Driven by a desire to provide a better future for his family, he makes the fateful choice to embark on the voyage, unaware of the impending tragedy that awaits.

Against the backdrop of the Titanic's final hours, "Laroche" pays homage to Laroche among the countless other Black individuals whose stories have been overlooked in the annals of history. Through powerful storytelling and emotional performances, the play challenges audiences to relive those final fateful moments of Laroche’s life.
Three nights only, The Birmingham Black Box is transformed to the RMS Titanic for an immersive experience!

From the first act to the climactic finale, this story of overcoming challenges of racism, finding love, and witnessing the ending we all know, Laroche's story will rock you to your core!

Suggested audience 11+ please.

Our Community Outreach Donation Day is for the Saturday, October 12th, 2pm matinee performance only.

It might seem like a long way off, but Weeping Bank are delighted to have secured a Saturday evening before Christmas at The Birmingham Black Box Theatre & Events venue to bring an extra chill to the midwinter air in with these two classic ghostly tales from the shelves of Weeping Bank Library, written by A. G. Smith and read by ‘The Librarian’.

‘Now you Lay me down to sleep’ and ‘An Unwise Purchase’

Saturday 14th December 2024, 6.45-8.45pm (refreshments available during an interval)

The Birmingham Black Box, 19 Harford Street, Birmingham, B19 3EB

Weeping Bank brings engaging, candlelit performances of ghost stories to community spaces and theatres, creating intimate and unique experiences for both avid and reluctant readers, gothic horror fans and lovers of traditional storytelling.

‘The quality of your writing of ghost stories is superb. I have found that very few horror stories have the genuine ability to chill, but both your tales were suitably unnerving and sublimely told.’ Nick Brunger, award-winning magician and storyteller.

'well written and flawlessly delivered with thespian-level gravitas' Emma Dark, award-winning filmmaker and actress, columnist for We Belong Dead magazine.

Warning - Weeping Bank readings contain moments of heightened tension. The reading is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 15 or of a nervous disposition.

Tickets are £12 and can be booked at www.birminghamblackbox.com
