Possibly my favourite bouquet of the week, full of juicy tulips, ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, cerinthe and rose foliage. This will be the last week of the tulips, they seem to have gone so fast this year! But the cutting beds are filling up with lots of lovely late Spring flowers.

We’re excited to be able to offer more growing workshops now that we have the infrastructure to do so. The first in our sow & grow series is on plant propagation - come and learn different methods for seed sowing, taking cuttings and plant division. The focus will be on cut flowers, but the methods are also applicable for veg growing and general gardening.
You’ll also be taking home a good quality reusable seed tray, filled with 77 seeds for you to grow on a home. All this plus a detailed information hand out. We have accommodation close by for anyone travelling from afar, or who would like to make a short break.

We’ve got more workshops planned in the sow & grow series, including seed saving, planning a cut flower patch and biennials. We’d love to hear if there’s any others you’d like to see?

A rare moment of sun over the weekend, capturing the dried flowers at the back of my office. I’ve really been enjoying using my dried flowers over the last few weeks, I’m possibly just desperate for any kind of colour after what has seemed like the longest winter imaginable. I’m so grateful my dried flower cards have been so well received, we’re all caught up on the orders so have room for a few more this week. We’re also been exploring using the dried flowers in a few different ways, we’ll show more over the next few days.

4. A new farmers market for us - we’d love to see you there with the first of our spring flowers, seeds and dried flowers
5. Sow & Grow workshops focusing on plant propagations - sowing, taking cuttings and division
6. The first of our workshops .at - first up is making a living spring wreath perfect for Easter.
7. Finally at the end of the month our spring flower subscription starts - there is a link in the bio if you’d like to sign up!

We’re putting the final growing plans together ready to start sowing seed next week, and are contemplating growing more vegetables for the local community to go alongside the flowers. Would anyone be interested in having veg from us alongside the flowers? Rather than a box scheme I think it would be a weekly availability list from which you can order, along with the eggs! What do you think?

Imbolc. The half way point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The light is returning to our valley and it’s just 17 days time until we reach 10 daylight hours, where seed sowing will begin in earnest. Fresh compost from is on its way, the seeds are ready and the sowing plans are nearly complete! It feels like it might be a good year 🤞

Day 8 of all about sustainability. It’s a huge topic, and I could probably spend a week talking about it! We have always been very keen to be as sustainable as possible, not because it’s the fashionable thing to do at the moment, but because it makes sense in so many ways, both environmentally and financially. We are the caretakers of our patch of land for a relatively short period of time, and I hope we leave it to the next generation in the best condition possible.

There are some big steps we have taken in our quest to be as gentle as possible on the land, including:
* no dig techniques
* no pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers
*no floral foam in our designs
*limiting our plastic use

However there are many more things to look at in the future - our water use, composting, packaging, more seed saving and more understanding of soil science.

Day 7 of all about colour. I am increasingly drawn to growing the colours that reflect the wider environment, especially as we are nestled under the heather rich Long Mynd. Soft fresh colours in spring, greens and whites in high summer, and stronger saturated colours in the autumn. This was taken in our orchard in the autumn, perfectly mirroring the colours in the local landscape. Are you drawn to a particular colour?

Day 6 of all about our customers. The move last year to has created a huge opportunity to expand our offering, and it’s taken a year of thinking and dreaming to try and decide which path to take. There are lots of plans in the pipeline but we are hoping to focus on local flowers for our local customers, funeral flowers, diy wedding, and flowers for local florists. If you love flowers, would like to support a local business and care about the environment that they’ve been grown in, please consider signing up to our newsletter, on our website. We are so grateful for all our customers that support us.

Day 4 of all about planning, which is very timely as I’ve spent most of this week sat in front of a spreadsheet! To keep 3 commercial polytunnels and 1/2 acre of flower beds plus a large veggie garden constantly producing takes quite a bit of organising - deciding on varieties to grow, which ones I think will sell well, ordering seed, making successional sowing schedules, making sure the right beds are empty at the right time for planting out, it can seem a bit of a juggling act! But definitely worth it when the final bouquets come together!

Day 3 of and todays prompt is reflections. I’m generally not someone that tends to look backwards too much, preferring to focus on what’s in front of me. But I have been reflecting on the last year (which was also our first ), and have a few things I’d like to take forward into 2024.
1. Obvious to everyone but me, the realisation I can’t do everything by myself. I read a quote last year that said that really resonated ‘you can do anything you want, you just can’t do everything’ (sorry I can’t credit them as I can’t remember 😬). To that end I’ve had someone join the team and the difference is immeasurable. We’re getting on top of the workload and are in a good place for spring.
2. Better record keeping. I always start the year well and then it slips. By taking a few minutes at the end of the day to put the figures in a spreadsheet will make it much easier to see which areas are profitable, and where we can improve.
3. Better watering systems. With the British climate becoming more unpredictable I’d like to be saving more water, and using it more efficiently. This is a big area of infrastructure I’d like to focus on this year, which should help future proof the farm.

Day 2 of about me! First thing to know is that showing my face on here is massively out of my comfort zone so here’s a few random facts about me before flowery content resumes tomorrow!
1. I used to work in the meat industry and was responsible for making pork pies for Fortnum & Mason. I also made a lot of scotch eggs but you’ll have to ask me about that!
2. At 17 I climbed to 6200 metre mountain in Nepal. We had to turn back 200m from the top.
3. A large part of my heart will always be in New Zealand. Shropshire is very similar in many ways.
4. I’ve raced 12,000 miles on a 68 ft sail boat, including around Cape Leeuwin. I’ve yet to experience anything more exhilarating than the southern Ocean.
5. I absolutely detest the smell and taste of tinned tuna. It is the only sandwich my daughter will eat.
Any of these surprise you about me?

It’s cold and a bit dreary outside so I thought I’d kick start January with day one of , all about how you started.
Growing cut flowers began for me a few years ago, when I challenged myself to provide our ‘restaurant with rooms’ business with home grown blooms throughout the year. I fell short initially, but only just. I also fell in love with the variety of flowers I could grow from a simple packet of seeds.
As I began to learn more about the cut flower trade I became aware of how unsustainable some flowers are, and how a small group of British growers are trying to change that, which lead me to join . I had a realisation that it was not just food that could be grown at a local level.
Fast forward a few years, and a few plots later, and we have now found our permanent home ! Over the next few days I’ll be letting you know what we’re about now, how you can buy our flowers, and more about our growing spaces.

Wreath details caught in a fleeting moment of winter afternoon sun. Filled with silver birch, limonium, honesty, strawflowers and statice, and finished with a couple of tiny bells. We still have some availability for wreaths later in the week if you are yet to order, and will be taking some to Shrewsbury Christmas Market on Friday.

These allium seed heads were a hit last weekend at Lydham Market so we’ll be bringing lots with us to Shrewsbury Farmers Market this Friday. Perfect in a vase, in a wreath or hanging on your tree! The perfect way to use natural ingredients to decorate your house this Christmas.

This is what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks, gathering, foraging and collecting all the bits for the Christmas wreaths, amassing great armfuls of foliage, bracken, cones and seed heads on my daily dog walks. All the bits that make them ever so slightly different and wild, from this valley that we get to call home.

Who else thinks the autumn colours this year have been glorious? I read .life newsletter last week who described the hues this year as being as saturated as she could remember - and I can’t think of a better word. A total spectre of colours. I’m still very much focussed on autumn at the moment, but Christmas thoughts are creeping in. I’m just not quite ready to let go of autumn yet.

Our apples had been pressed into the most lovely of juices, by Mill Orchards. These are a blend of apples from our old orchard, and the juice is now available to purchase at our workshops. We’ll also be serving mulled apple juice while wreath making! We’re very slowly moving towards self sufficiency in a few areas, with the ultimate goal of integrating everything that we do - flowers, fruit, vegetables, seeds and livestock.
