With the clean slate New Year feeling in the air, what have we been upto this weekend
💒 Site venue at @orchardleigh_estate_weddings for one of our Spring weddings, looking forward to working with @danwardphotography and bringing the Spring colours inside
🌱 Keeping the Autumn sown hardy seedling frost free through the freezing temperatures. In the poly I use fleece and take seedling trays outside to water to avoid problems with damp
💪 More rose beds going in, these are for David Austin roses, more Queen of Sweden 👑
Hope everyone else has had a good weekend ❤️

How to get dreamy, wild, romantic, wedding flowers?
Today, I was at a site meeting @orchardleigh_estate_weddings with a lovely Spring wedding ccuple, a time of year when the below are all so important 🌼
1. Freshest flowers 🪻🌻🌼
Flowers filled with scent and movement, bringing the wonder of blossom and early Spring buds inside
2. Texture 🪩
Billowy focals alongside feathery grasses and fillers with plenty of shape, such as poppyheads, give areangements plenty of life and an etheral woodland feel..no static, tight, dusty arranagements here ❌❌

Christmas is an emotional magnifying glass 🤍
For many the joy of Christmas makes everything bigger and brighter and filled with joy ✨For others, sadness and grief can feel deeper, particularly when backlit by happy family snapshots 😔
If you are missing a piece of your family, or finding today tricky, @mindcharity has some really useful advice.
Take care of you and yours, Sarah xx

How to get the very best wedding flowers ✨✨
Look for a florist or flower farmer that can provide:
1. Fresh, seasonal flowers ☀️🍁
Flowers filled with scent & movement, not those chemical filled and static
2. Shape 🌻🌷 Arrangements with big billowy focal flowers, as well as
3. Height. Tall spires to give structure
4. Sustainable floristy 🌎
Tread lightly on the planet, don't have floral foam in your wedding arrangements 🚫🚫 Not only does it pollute our rivers, but also results in really static, old fashioned arrangements
5. Seedheads 🪩
Signature of a Golden Valley Meadow arrangement, bringing the wild to everything we do
6. Texture
Fluffy, pillowy, ethereal, we live for texture 🙌🙌

Pretty different huh!
This is the River Boyd, it runs the entire length of our flower field, it shapes the land, provides a wild haven and it's Springs water the field; the river defines us, which is why it's front and entire of our logo :-)
Benji usually loves a along the river, not today, her muddy paws are firmly in front of the wood burner 🔥

Snap, did it!
If only it was that easy..Well maybe not this morning, on these blue sky, warm Autumn days, there is nowhere I would rather be than picking dahlias & wedding flowers in the flower field...ask me again in February, when it's dark and my hands are frozen...probably would still pick the flower field though.
Sending love to our weekend couples! See you soon! X

Insider tips!
With running a flower farm, one of the most important aspects is ensuring we have sustainable and cost efficient cutting beds; we want our plants to work hard for their space. Plants which are labour efficient, produce beautiful blooms and self-propagate are the good standard 💪💪
These are our top perennials:
1. Verbena: Cut to the base for reflowering the following year, also readily self-seeds
2. Echinacea Purpurea: Don't just delight for one season, they will continue to produce new plants year after year
3. Roses: Cut back at the end of the season for blooms the following year, also easy to propagate..more on this later!
4. Rudebekia: Spreads through seeds and rhizomes
5. Peonies: Blooms for decades and can be divided every 5-6 years

If the England football team were flowers...
This week, apart from the incessant rain, the talk of the town is of course England’s place in the final of the Euros ⚽️⚽️
So, in the spirit of national pride, I have been considering which flower favourites our footballers would be, if they lived in my flower field and not a mansion in Essex...
We start with, the little firecracker that is Bukayo Saka. He is a David Austin Rose – you simply cannot afford to substitute him or have him on the bench.
Next up, it’s Harry Kane as Verbena Bonariensis, unflashy, and perhaps unfairly lamented, but he does have his moments, and will consistently bloom when the bright young Summer things are dropping around him.
Jordan Pickford is ever dependable Cosmos. When everything else is awash in the field, it's solid and admirable under pressure, called upon to save things when the chips are down. When the aliens invade, or Trump shouts at North Korea, you want a stash of Jordan Pickford Cosmos hidden under the bed.
Bellingham is the Dahlia. He covers lots of regions and has performed reliably well with flashes of brilliance, a worthy foundation stone of any cutting garden.
Declan Rice is my Apple Mint. He's absolutely everywhere, not likely to get singled out for praise, but is a versatile player who gets the job done.
Finally, to the man of the moment. In my imaginary football portfolio, Ollie Watkins is ranunculus. No-one apart from keen keen footie fans has really heard of it, bringing it on is risky, but when you get it to germinate, and have the wedding/florist ready, then BOOM. It remains to be seen whether you sow it for years, or leave it on the bench in the next match, or keep backing your bet and bring it back for (hopefully) more.
Have a great weekend everyone, and good luck to my flower field team, all together now Sweeeet Caroliiiine ....
Xx
