This week, apart from the incessant rain, the talk of the town is of course England’s place in the final of the Euros ⚽️⚽️
So, in the spirit of national pride, I have been considering which flower favourites our footballers would be, if they lived in my flower field and not a mansion in Essex...
We start with, the little firecracker that is Bukayo Saka. He is a David Austin Rose – you simply cannot afford to substitute him or have him on the bench.
Next up, it’s Harry Kane as Verbena Bonariensis, unflashy, and perhaps unfairly lamented, but he does have his moments, and will consistently bloom when the bright young Summer things are dropping around him.
Jordan Pickford is ever dependable Cosmos. When everything else is awash in the field, it's solid and admirable under pressure, called upon to save things when the chips are down. When the aliens invade, or Trump shouts at North Korea, you want a stash of Jordan Pickford Cosmos hidden under the bed.
Bellingham is the Dahlia. He covers lots of regions and has performed reliably well with flashes of brilliance, a worthy foundation stone of any cutting garden.
Declan Rice is my Apple Mint. He's absolutely everywhere, not likely to get singled out for praise, but is a versatile player who gets the job done.
Finally, to the man of the moment. In my imaginary football portfolio, Ollie Watkins is ranunculus. No-one apart from keen keen footie fans has really heard of it, bringing it on is risky, but when you get it to germinate, and have the wedding/florist ready, then BOOM. It remains to be seen whether you sow it for years, or leave it on the bench in the next match, or keep backing your bet and bring it back for (hopefully) more.

Embracing the 'plastic vs planet' theme we've been reflecting what more we can put in place. We don't have single-use plastic on the flower farm 🚫 We have until this point reused plastic growing trays, but as we expand as a business, we also want to be reducing our plastic usage and supporting positive change businesses, so we've decided to start using soil blockers. Soil blockers create little blocks of soil into which we can sow seed, stopping the need for plastic trays, more to come as we show you our plastic-free journey.

💰💰Ouch! How much!?!?!
A lot of people complain that Chocolate Cosmos is too hard to find and expensive, the reason is that it is nearly sterile and produces very little seed, even in its native Mexico. The only way to propagate in the UK is from root cuttings, which is what we'll be doing this year 🌱🌱
As its name suggests, Chocolate Cosmos really does smell like chocolate, especially at the end of a sunny day. The aroma comes from the vanillin that the flowers produce.
Whilst it might be a diva, but it's a Golden Valley Meadow stalwart

It's starting 🏁🏁
As we head into February, the world feels like it's waking up a little, and whilst we're always alert to any meteorological surprises, so far, with spring flowering bulbs on point and the hazels heavy with catkins, it looks like we should be in for a bumper crop of blooms 🙌🙌
Being riverside, and having several natural springs on the meadows, we have good growing conditions for willow. A staple of Golden Valley Meadow early Spring bouquets, we bring the spires under cover in February to encourage them to open 🌿🌿
Pussy Willow is very easy to grow from cuttings. ✂️ 🪴
🟢 Trim the stems to 30cm lengths, then pop them in a vase filled with 10-15cm of water
🟢 Sit the vase on a bright windowsill out of direct sunlight
🟢 Give the stems a few weeks and roots will have sprouted below the water line
🟢 Grow-on in pots
🟢 Plant out
🟢 Bask in your plant parenting glory ✨✨
