Not every part of the creative process that ultimately results in a dream wedding dress quite fits the romantic version of all things bridal. Sometimes (for that, read often) the work is functional and precise. Personally, I love fitting. It’s so challenging because everybody (for that, read literally every body) is so different. My latest blog post talks a little bit about what goes on behind the scenes after a bride’s very first toile fitting. For your convenience the link is below. By all means ask me questions and I’ll respond by return.

This fluid, silk satin creation was made to flatter curves. The corseted bodice supports. It ensures a neat silhouette, forming a base for the intricate draping. The slim, hip-skimming skirt has enough 'swish' to add romance, but the overall effect is modern and chic.

I've recently been asked to put together a few archive images and this got me thinking about the way that styles in fashion, and wedding fashion is no exception, go around and around.

I've completed almost one full cycle I reckon, with the big sleeves and bows of my early days jockeying to make comeback. This dress belongs to an era when almost every part of a wedding dress was decorated and embellished somehow. Tucks, ruffles, swags, piping... you name it! I used to approach the making of such dresses by treating each part as an individual component to be worked upon. The construction came later when all the parts were joined.

Often there were 'secret' elements to the design that could be detached to make the bride more comfortable, or to give her a different look once the formal part of the wedding day was over and the partying began. Now I think that brides treat themselves to two dresses! Goodness, it was so labour intensive, with many gowns taking 300+ hours of creative time from start to finish.

So, this isn't the version of 'About Jo' that you'll read on my website. This is about me right here, right now. To explain; the pen drawing depicts my favourite shop and believe me, I've had a few! This one was in Glastonbury and it was home to my creative soul for a decade. It was here that I honed my craft in a town that was and still is a hotbed of creativity. I taught myself all about the transformational fabulousness of a perfectly fitted dress. I developed my unique fabric multi-layering method. This is a way of altering the properties of cloth to suit any number of desired design outcomes. Over the past couple of years, pandemic and circumstance have collided. That's been an experience shared by millions. In my case, I found myself supporting a very dear friend through troubled times. Now, as 2023 unfolds it's full of promise. I find that I can once more indulge my life-long love of silk and lace. Garment technology is my passion and I've a fascination for construction. I revel in every seam and stitch. So, here we go again. I'm loving it!

Hey Everyone,
I just want to say a heartfelt thank you to all those who’ve followed this page in the past 24 hours.

Can you believe that Jo Christoforides Bridalwear never really mastered social media when it was on the high street, even in Wells and that was just a decade or so ago.

When I started out in the late 1980s (shock, horror!) social media wasn’t even a thing! I think it might be quite a lot of fun going forward.

It's glorious to be posting about wedding dresses and what could be better than making my first post all about my new website.

Making feminine, fitted, luxury bridalwear has been a lifelong passion. I mean lifelong!

I spent so many happy hours as a little girl endlessly drawing long dresses. Back in those days my inspiration came from the Hollywood movies that I watched every weekend. I craved anything sparkly or metallic. Gold, silver, pewter or bronze it didn't matter, as long as it reeked of glamour.

The bespoke wedding dresses that I make today are a reflection of many years of undivided focus and dedication. My designs have evolved to be representative of a classic bridal look. I definitely make wedding dresses for brides seeking a timeless style.

Naturally, that style embodies quality of craftsmanship, a practiced skill and a deep understanding of luxury fabrics. My dresses are designed to bring you pleasure, delight and above all, confidence on your wedding day.
