They have been distraught about Iranian state oppression and cruelty especially since last Autumn. Even though they now live here in the UK they have felt scared for the safety of their family in Iran if they speak up. Getting this group together and organising this concert has been our way of offering them and the women of Iran some solidarity and practical support from Bristol, through raising a

wareness and funds. Iran’s ’morality police’ arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on 13th September 2022 in Tehran for the way she was wearing her headscarf. Three days later she died in custody after being in a coma. Her death triggered widespread protests in Iran. Women and girls put their lives on the line by taking off their hijabs, cutting their hair and standing in front of police lines. Also, 26-year-old Shervin Hajipour’s song Baraye, composed from tweets in Iran on why people were protesting, became an anthem for Iranian protestors both in Iran and the diaspora. Hajipour was arrested following the publication of the track on his instagram account and he was ordered to take it down, but not before it had been seen 40 million times in less than 2 days. The main theme of the song is support of women with the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom". In February 2023, it picked up the Grammy award for ‘Best Song for Social Change’. As of February 2023, "Baraye" has been performed by many Iranian and non-Iranian artists, singers and dancers alike, outside of Iran in the original Persian and in translations. On April 2023 Hajipour was listed as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

WOMAN, LIFE, FREEDOM
*The Islamic Republic of Iran is a corrupt, cruel and oppressive regime
*Iran has one of the worst Human Rights records in the world
*Recently women and girls have been the primary target of violence and persecution by the State
*Any opposition is brutally suppressed with activists, protesters, and often innocent bystanders, violently abused, tortured or murdered. The average age of people arrested is 15
*The current official toll of 537 deaths and executions contrasts starkly with 145,000 unaccounted deaths reported in 2022
*The freedoms we take for granted, such as proper trials or equal rights for women and minorities, are denied to them
*Many Iranians are forced to leave their country and live in exile due to fear of persecution

The Woman Life Freedom gig on Saturday night was a beautiful evening of connection and solidarity.

The Gasworks Singers began with the ancient song “Ide Were”, about the Yoruba goddess of femininity, love and friendship. They went on to sing MILCK’s song "Quiet" which became the anthem for the Women’s March in 2017.

Natasha and Hanna spoke magnificently and with poise and grace about the current situation in Iran and the impact it is having. Natasha's words moved us to tears.

Omid provided a backdrop of images of Iran and those who have been killed by the regime and we heard the song “Baraye” by 26-year-old Shervin Hajipour. Composed of tweets from protesters, this song went viral earlier this year and picked up a Grammy.

The evening finished with the exuberant Fantasy Orchestra wearing Iran's colours of green, white and red and the Gasworks Singers joined them at the end to sing Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”.

Thank you to all who shared this evening with us, to the organisers behind the scenes, to the performers, to Hanna and Natasha, to Omid, our friend and inspiration, and to the women and freedom fighters in Iran - we see you, we support you, and we will continue to use our platforms to spread your message.
