Pre-season match
Pontyclun 14 Barry RFC Youth 43
The absence of six starting forwards because of holidays made little difference to Barry. With Pontyclun choosing to play uncontested scrums from the start, head coach John Dimond was able to field a lighter pack.
Dimond juggled his starting line up, and included a number of first year Youth players, but Barry scored two tries in the first ten minutes, and were 28-0 ahead at the interval. “We cover tackled well, and when we got the ball, spread it quickly,” said Dimond.
Morgan Prosser and Caelan Hurley, both having played for Hartpury college earlier in the day, were in the squad, with Hurley grabbing three tries and Prosser one.
Barry had four tries disallowed, but Dimond had no real complaints. “You don’t want to go to these places and demoralise players,” he said. “If you get to 50 points, the game is stopped. But we got a full game under our belts. Good exercise based on who I had available.”
The team’s back line is set to be the same as last season, one year older, with more experience and greater maturity. “Every time we get the ball in the backs we look as if we are going to do something,” he said.
Barry’s first Regional Youth League fixture is at Pontypridd on September 28. The team will play a warm-up game on September 21 at Old Penarthians.
Barry scorers: tries - Caelan Hurley 3, Tyler Reinholdt 2, Morgan Prosser, Joe Jenkins; conv - Prosser 4

Pre-season match
Report by Ken Watkins
Barry RFC 5 Newport HSOB 12
This scrappy, windswept match came to a premature end when referee Tom Griffin suffered a head injury after being flattened when a visiting player collided with him. He needed attention from the physiotherapists of both clubs before abandoning the game in the 70th minute.
Despite odd patches of quality rugby, this was a game of far too many stoppages as the penalty count mounted, many of the offences not clear to the players, or spectators. Diplomatically, head coach Mike Morgan described the match as “a test of character” for his team.
As the previous week Barry, playing against the strong wind in the first half, were forced to spend spells deep in their own 22, but after conceding a ninth minute try, they generally kept the visitors at bay, with Morgan praising their “skill and vision to get out with the ball in hand”.
Another major positive, he felt, was the fitness Barry demonstrated, something the players have been worked hard on in training. Holiday absences meant passive scrums following injuries, and a further reduction to 13 men when Josh Edwards got an undeserved second-half yellow card, but both made little difference.
“Fitness will tell in the coming season,” said Morgan. “I’m happy with the fitness. When we were down to 13 players, we were still playing like minute one. The players are now seeing the fruits of their labour in training.”
Barry scored an excellent 48th minute try. Alyn Evans stole possession at a lineout, surged forward and fed Edwards, near the touchline, who outpaced the defence before cutting in to touch down. Owen Rees’ conversion shaved the outside of the post. The visitors’ 60th minute second try came when Barry were down to 13.
The scrum, and lineout were, Morgan felt, an improvement on the previous week, although Barry were too high in the maul. Something to work on before the opening league match on September 7, when Penarth are the visitors to the Reservoir Field.
The visitors obviously came determined to battle – one first-half punch was not spotted, along with other offences of varying degrees. On those Morgan said: “You can’t control what’s going on around you, but you can control how you react to it.
“The game challenged us. If players get pinged it’s not always their fault. But the boys kept their cool. I thought we acted positively, and the game brought us together a bit more.”

Pre-season fixture
Report by Ken Watkins
Barry RFC 21 Pill Harriers 17
Head coach Mike Morgan will be checking the film of Saturday’s pre-season fixture this week, ticking the box for aspects of the game that went as planned, and looking at those that didn’t before deciding what to ditch and what can be fixed.
Morgan got the win he wanted – “it gives the players a bit of confidence, a bit of pride” – and the test he was hoping for. Pill may play one division lower, but they provided Barry with a challenging contest, particularly in the first half, when their forward power produced three tries.
Barry absorbed the lessons of that half, and then in the second “got back to our basics, the core element of our play,” said Morgan, “simple, but fast and effective rugby.” If Barry had been on the back foot in the first half, that change of approach in the second turned the game completely around.
“Pre-season, the players have a licence to try things,” said Morgan. “We tried a few things that didn’t work, and found ourselves deep in our own 22. In the first half the breakdown was very messy, and we made errors in midfield which allowed Pill to have good field advantage.
“But credit to them, their driving lineout was strong. We needed to do better at defending a driving lineout. The second half was more constructive. We started moving the ball round effectively, and pushed them a little bit wider. If we had done that in the first half, the margin might have been more.”
His message at half-time was straightforward – manage the relationship with the referee and go back to the simple game plan. “All credit to the players, they worked with the referee, so there were fewer penalties, and the game was flowing a bit more.”
Pill scored tries in the 11th, 15th and 40th minutes to lead 17-7 at half-time, all three tries coming from forward drives. Barry ho**er Dafydd Jones scored the first of his two tries in the 22nd minute, rounding off a spell of pressure. His second came immediately after the interval, taking a return pass from his lineout throw, and racing clear down the touchline to go over unchallenged.
Rhys Forse put Barry in front after 71 minutes as the pressure told, Owen Rees making it three out of three conversions.
“Today we learned, under pressure, what works and what doesn’t,” said Morgan. “It was a genuine test.”
Barry face another tough pre-season match on Saturday when Newport HSOB are the visitors, East Division 2 title winners last season.

BARRY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD
Interim Chairman's Report
Extraordinary General
Meeting 16th August 2024

Introduction
Ladies and Gentlemen, Members of Barry Rugby Club,
I welcome you all to this Extraordinary General Meeting. On behalf of the club committee I thank those of you who have taken the time to attend the club this evening and for your ongoing support and commitment to Barry RFC.

It is not very often EGM's are called at the club but it is absolutely necessary for the committee to call this meeting in light of the resignations of the former Club Chairman, Club Secretary and two other committee members in May of this year. This is a situation that is unprecedented in the club's history. Fortunately, the remaining members of the committee stood firm and I was asked to step in and help out. Hence, I find myself standing before you this evening as Interim Chairman.

Regrettably, more recently we have also seen the departure of Andy Pryce and the club Treasurer Chris Briard. On behalf of the committee I would like to sincerely thank them both for their efforts and commitment to the club. I was fortunate enough to work with Chris when I was last on the committee and from my own experience Ican tell you that he has worked tirelessly over recent years as a coach, director and treasurer. Without people like Chris who give up so much of their free
time the club would simply not survive.
However, on a really positive note I am pleased to confirm that during the ongoing transitional period since May of this year the committee has taken steps to recruit a few new members who have stepped up to the plate and responded really positively and with enthusiasm over the past few months.

Introducing:
1. Zoe O'Sullivan
(Sponsorship/Grant
Funding)
2.
Jules Morgan
(M&J Joint Sec/Assistant Safeguarding) 3.
Ruth Thomas
(M&J Joint Sec)
4.
Hayley Tombs
(Safeguarding Officer) 5.
Glynn Pirso
(Patron Liaison)
6.
Tim Jones
(Patron Liaison)
7.
Lloyd Jones
(Interim Treasurer)
8.
Jo Eveleigh
(Interim Club Secretary)
9.
Mike Prosser
(Interim Chairman)

As I have already said the committee are still getting to grips with the transition process and we are proactively taking steps to carefully review and stream line our operational processes. We are keen to continue building our relationship with our local community and fuly supporting all ongoing projects. However, I can assure you that we will never lose sight of the fact that we are a rugby club and
rugby will always be at the heart of our decision-making processes.

I think it would be helpful to explain some of the work that we are undertaking at the moment by way of a brief update, for example:1 We are conducting a financial audit of the club's bank accounts so that we can accurately calculate our running costs in comparison to our income streams. Last season was a difficult
one for the club due to the adverse weather conditions and we were forced to play a number of home games at Bro Morgannwg and the associated costs of hiring the facility combined with the subsequent downturn in bar take as a consequence of not playing on our home ground has impacted quite significantly on our turnover in comparison to last year. Please rest assured that you will be presented with the final accounts and further updates when we hold our AGM in October of this year.
2. We are switching over to a new accounts package and linking in al payroll to go out on a monthly basis which wil now be administered by the Club's Bookkeeper, Michelle Theaker.
3. We are picking up negotiations with the Vale of Glamorgan and Welsh water in relation to the ongoing lease of the club and the grounds. The 9 year lease on the 1st team pitch, car
park and the clubhouse has been agreed but understandably the previous committee were reluctant to sign the lease bearing in mind the drainage issues that were clearly apparent in relation to the 1s team pitch. I can inform you that it is the committee's intention to rectify the drainage issues at the conclusion of this year's season and push on as soon as possible with the signing of the lease agreement.
Again, with running costs at the forefront of our minds we have taken the difficult decision to internally manage the club bar, using part-time staff on 0 hours contracts to work the bar as and when required.

Although our bank balance remains healthy we must endeavor to cut our cloth in an effort to trim down our overhead costs and in due course we will also be issuing employment contracts and reviewing remuneration in relation to all club employees.

6. We have taken the decision to close the club shop and there will be ongoing discounted sales so please liaise with Jo Eveleigh and have a look what is available. I understand that we are offering a 20% discount on all goods. Please remember that we are contracted with Macron and if you are buying kit through sponsors. I am afraid it will have to come through Macron. Those of you who have looked on the Macron website will see that there is a lot of club sportswear on offer and you can now order that directly through the website.
7. We are actively pursuing sponsorship for this season along with grant funding for the development of the club in conjunction with the new lease agreements. We are proposing to
continually improve our facilities inside the club and unless absolutely necessary we will try to carry out as much of the work as we can using volunteers from within the club. We are
planning a major clear out of the changing rooms, storage cupboards and the containers. The changing rooms and the main bar area of the club will require redecoration and we are hoping that we can organise working parties to carry out this work so that we do not have to pay outside contractors. If we can make savings and secure grant funding then we can take realistic and positive steps to improve and expand our facilities.

We are creating a new website independent of the WRU website, which we will then dispense with. Our new website will be updated regularly with news reports and club releases. You wil also be able to book the club facilities electronically online through the website. We are also going to close al pages and have just one Facebook account and one Twitter account. We are dispensing with Klubfunder and any club related purchases can be paid through a link on the website, by card machine at the club or by paying over the bar.
9. Finally, as a committee we can assure you that we will consistently do all that we can take the club forward, improve facilities and most importantly achieve success on the rugby field.
We will conduct the affairs of the club collectively in accordance with our constitution and rules. We will listen to you and take on board any advice or suggestion. To that end we have created new email domains and associated drives that belong to the club so anybody who has anything they want to raise with the committee, myself or Jo included, can email us directly at any time. There will be a picture board going up within the club identifying all our committee members and their contact details.

I would just like to talk to you now about the candidates for the honorary positions in question:1 Firstly I'd like to talk about Jo Eveleigh. Jo played a major role as the hub leader for the islanders and she is testament to the success of the girls Hub. She has gone on from strength to strength and for me she has shown tremendous commitment to Barry RFC. I'm not sure if she is sponsored by Duracell but the girl just does not stop. I can tell you unequivocally that she has worked tirelessly and continues to work tirelessly behind-the-scenes. Her commitment, tenacity and hard work is probably, if I am honest, one of the reasons why I am now prepared to stay on board and be part of the committee moving forward. I can tell you that the club is extremely lucky to have her as our club secretary.

2. Secondly, I'd like to talk about Lloyd Jones. Thankfully the recruitment jungle drums were beating loud enough for him to hear them and he decided to contact us to say that he was expressing an interest in helping out with the club's finances. I didn’t know Lloyd before I met him. I can tell you that he is a former player at the club so it's fantastic that he now wants to give something back to the club. What can tell you is that he has also worked tirelessly during the short time that he has been involved with us. The ground he has covered and the responsibility he has taken on is tremendous and it looks like we have found another valuable asset as treasurer and I'm looking forward to working with him.

So getting back to the purpose of this meeting. For the sake of the record we are going to vote in place a new Honorary Chairman, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer. A notice was released to the membership asking any members with expressions of interest in relation to any of the Honorary positions to submit a written application to the Interim Club Secretary Jo Eveleigh by the 2nd August 24 in accordance with the club's constitutional rules. I can confirm that no expressions of interest have been received.
Therefore all that is required this evening is to vote on a resolution to elect the candidates officially into office, namely:

1. Mike Prosser as Honorary Club Chairman
2. Jo Eveleigh as Honorary Club Secretary
3. Lloyd Jones as Honorary Club Treasurer

Those in Favour Each candidate respectively

In conclusion, I want to thank each of you for your dedication to Barry Rugby Club. The club has faced challenges before but we will embrace this wind of change and move forward together. I am confident that with your continued support, the club will not only survive but thrive in the years to come.

Thank you.

Michael J Prosser

A lot of ex-Barry RFC players will have encountered Mathew on the rugby field. He was a hard no nonsense rugby player and a true gentleman.

Mathew’s brother Duncan, was another talented flanker who played for Barry RFC back in the 80’s and we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Duncan and all Mathew’s family and loved ones.

An Extraordinary General Meeting in August 2024

We hope that everybody is enjoying the summer recess. This is historically the time of year when everybody takes some time away from rugby to spend quality time with family or in the case of some of our more senior players rest up, rehabilitate and recuperate in readiness for yet again another tough season of Division 1 East Central rugby.

Very sadly, we have to announce that Mr Chris Briard has recently stood down as a director of the club. Chris has put in a tremendous amount of hard work and commitment over recent years. He played a pivotal role as a director and member of the club committee and he will be sorely missed. We hope that you will all join us in expressing our gratitude and thanks to Chris for all his hard work and we wish him and his family the best of luck for the future.

As a lot of you will know over recent months a significant number of the committee resigned from post, something that is unprecedented in the club’s history. However, we would like to reassure you all that the current committee is moving forward with an ambition to put rugby at the heart of everything that we do at Barry RFC.
We are currently meeting on a regular basis to ensure that the club is firing on all cylinders as we move into next season. We have appointed Jo Eveleigh as interim Honorary Club Secretary and Mike Prosser has stepped in to help out as interim club chairman. We are excited for what lies ahead and we are embracing the wind of change that is blowing through the club at the moment. Hence, we have decided to call an Extraordinary General Meeting on Friday 16th August 2024. The meeting will take place at the clubhouse commencing 7pm.

We are putting out a call to any ex-players or members who are interested in joining the committee with an emphasis on putting rugby at the forefront of the clubs future. The purpose of this EGM is to allow our membership to vote for:
1. The position of Honorary Club Treasurer (Director)
2. The position of Honorary Club Secretary (Director)
3. The position of Honorary Club Chairman (Director)

If you wish to express an interest in committee membership, Directorship or any honorary position then please ensure that you obtain letters of nomination from a minimum of 2 members along with a letter of consent from you, the candidate. Please ensure that all correspondence reaches the honorary club secretary no later than 14 days before the date of the EGM.

Our club has a proud rugby history. We all belong to something that has meant so much to so many for so long. We are all custodians of our club and we have a duty to preserve its future for generations of rugby players to come so please get on board the bus with us for the next part of our journey.

Best wishes to you all,
Barry RFC Committee
