THRILLED to be stocking these hand dyed beauties from Moonlight Fibre 🌕💫

I asked Jo to send me hanks I’d love and she smashed the brief. Before I could unbox it, customers took it out of my hands so I actually haven’t got a picture of all of them 🫣 But here’s a little taster for you before you come in to The Yarnery to grab your next haul!

I wanted episode two of to sink in a bit before I posted again about it.

Of course, I’ve spent a lot of time this week discussing it with students, customers and group members and I think I’ve deduced that the show just isn’t for people who can already knit and crochet. We desperately want it to be. But it isn’t. People are left feeling really frustrated that opportunities have been missed to explain different techniques and styles. Meadow, after working in to the back loop of her knitting (which by the way can be done, it’s not wrong it just gives a different finish) in my opinion, shouldn’t have been told off by the judges but asked why she chose to do it like that. New knitters could have learned something fun. What’s so great about being a new knitter is that you can try things without feeling worried that it’s going to be judged.

No one should be crying when they’re doing something they love. Yes, it’s a competition and there needs to be an element of risky business for the viewers but yarn craft isn’t like that in rl. It’s joyous.

I will be watching episode three and again want to say that the contestants are all fabulous. I don’t know what the answer is, I’m just posting my thoughts now that I’ve let episode two percolate and it’s not sitting very well with me.

Two spaces have become available on Tuesday evening Hookers with Hooking Good at The Yarnery 🧶 What are you waiting for, Yarnies?

Two spaces have become available on Tuesday Evening Hookers starting November 18th

6:30 - 8:30
Bookable in six week blocks

If you’ve been waiting for a space on the evening sessions - this is your sign!

While you think about it, enjoy this glorious African Flower highland cow by Julie one of my Tuesday day hookers who used James C. Brett pure cotton and skills learnt at The Yarnery to create it. Julie hardly ever crochets things for herself (it’s been noted) - this masterpiece was crocheted for a friend of hers who just loves highland cows and so with the help of Rea, another of my Hookers, to find the perfect pattern, she set to with a hook and some determination and worked up this lovely moo. Well done Julie! What’s next?

Add a bit of festive sparkle to your next make with King Cole’s Cosmos! Available now at The Yarnery ✨

This super fine, sequinned yarn is perfect for adding a bit of EXTRA to any skein you’d like to see shine. Use for the whole project, add it to a trim or stripe it through your pattern at random to create something truly magical. The possibilities are endless.

I’ll be in the shop today from 10:30 - 5:00 and I’m looking forward to meeting new faces and discussing lots of new projects!

The picture below is of customer, Amy’s, new shawlette that was hooked up after a crochet class with Hooking Good on Tuesday evening 🧶

It’s been a LOVELY day at The Yarnery! Hookers this morning and Afternoon Purlers from lunch time - both groups thoroughly unpacking their thoughts on , learning skills and making stitches!

Last weekend, customer Sue came in for more yarn (obvs) and brought this beautiful shawl she’s been working on for her mum to show me. How lovely? I really like the orange pop against the almost antiqued neutral.

What are you all making today?

So, like many of you, I’ve just finished the first ever episode of The Game of Wool.

Potentially unpopular opinion…

All of the contestants were fantastic and the garments they made were better than the presenter of the show could ever dream of creating. I realise that raising my head above the parapet to say this will mean some of you will shoot but it’s just… true. 👀

Yarn craft shouldn’t induce anxiety. I will say it again because I really mean it. IT SHOULD NOT RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE! If you’re knitting or crocheting to impress, you’re doing it wrong.

Here’s a reminder to enjoy your knitting. Embrace the peace. Crochet slowly. Without judgment.

I AM looking forward to seeing what they do next. But I won’t be taking on any of that stress in my own craft. My craft is for me and your craft is for you. When we meet up to do it together, it’s for pleasure and we won’t be under pressure.

Who’s tuning in tomorrow for The Game of Wool at 8pm on Channel 4? There will be some incredible knitters judging and Tom Daley will be there too.

My suppliers tell me that I’ll be able to spot lots of our in stock yarns on the show so I’ll be ready for you next week if anyone wants to recreate anything exciting! We’re still pretty much in the dark about what the challenges will be so it’ll be interesting to see how quickly they can work if the contestants are timed to create!

What would you like to see them try?

Fabulous work, Gill!
