Happy Easter! It has been a tradition in our Cotswold village to gather primroses on Good Friday for an Easter cross. My grandmother and mum, did this and ,as a child, I went with my sister and cousins to the local coppice to gather them too. We were sent off with a hot cross bun, a mushroom chip and a pocket full of onion bands to create lovely little posies of butter yellow primroses. These were then used to create the cross to hang on the pulpit on Easter Sunday. Now I pick primroses from my plot and place them on a willow and moss frame to create a fully compostable cross.
I think those childhood adventures collecting wildflowers sparked my interest in flowers and love of the humble primrose.
Do any other villages have a similar tradition? It would be great to know.
